I went utside t wait fr father and t admire my new knife in the sunlight. Sme twn bys came by and saw me. They surrunded me and started saying bad things. They called me dirty and stupid and said that I shuld nt have such a fine knife. The largest f these bys pushed me back and I fell ver ne f the ther bys. I drpped my knife and ne f them picked it up and they all ran away laughing. I hate them. I hate them all.”
The elder Cherkee, with eyes that had seen t much, lifted his grandsn’s face s his eyes lked int the by’s face. Grandfather said, “Let me tell yu a stry. I, t, at times, have felt a great hate fr thse wh have taken s much with n srrw fr what they d. But hate wears yu dwn and des nt hurt yur enemy. It is like drinking pisn and wishing yur enemy wuld die. I have struggled with these feelings many times. It is as if tw wlves are inside me...
It is a terrible fight.
One wlf is gd and des n harm. He lives in harmny with all arund him and des nt take ffense when n ffense is intended. It will nly fight when it is right t d s and in the right way. This wlf stands fr jy, peace, lve, hpe, sharing, mdesty, kindness, friendship, sympathy, genersity, truth, and faith.
The ther wlf is full f anger. The littlest thing will set ff his fiercest temper. He fights everyne, all the time, fr n reasn. He cannt think because his anger and hate are s much.
It is helpless anger, fr his anger will change nthing. This wlf represents fear, envy, greed, self-pity, guilt, lies, false pride and superirity.
Smetimes, it is hard t live with these tw wlves inside me fr bth f them try t cntrl my spirit. This same fight is ging n inside yu and inside every ther persn t.”

The increasing frequency f rcket launches is crwding the regin f space clsest t Earth, knwn as lw-Earth rbit — a zne that is already peppered with tens f thusands f bits f decades-ld hardware. Experts warn that the danger psed by all this space junk is rising sharply. In recent years, debris has fallen n cuntries acrss the glbe. Aside frm falling t Earth, bjects may als smash int each ther in rbit, generating even mre debris (碎片). Scientists als pint t the ptential danger t cmmercial aviatin, as well as the pllutin caused by debris burning up in the atmsphere.
T tackle the grwing prblem, varius strategies have been put frward fr cleaning up lw-Earth rbit. A Japanese cmpany recently debuted a prttype fr a kind f “space garbage truck” that it hpes can retrieve (取回) inactive satellites frm rbit. A Swiss cmpany cperating with the Eurpean Space Agency is planning similar retrieval missins. Anther slutin, in the shrt term at least, is t bst bjects t higher rbits, where they lead t less f a danger. In 2022, a Chinese missin bsted an inactive BeiDu navigatin satellite int a higher and less crwded zne.
A lnger-term slutin wuld invlve recycling such bjects—and sme f that recycling can happen in rbit, astrphysicist Jnathan McDwell says. “At sme pint we’re ging t have t mve frm dispsing f ld satellites in the atmsphere t taking them t recycling statins where their parts get reused fr new satellites, and we actually d sme f the manufacturing (制造) in rbit.” Mriba Jah, a space scientist, calls this the “circular space ecnmy”, and the Eurpean Space Agency suggests it can be achieved by 2050.
Anther seemingly simple idea is t make satellites mre durable. “The message that I keep trying t deliver t anybdy wh will listen is: We need t have fewer satellites with lnger peratinal lifetimes,” says astrnmer Samantha Lawler. “Anything that yu can d t make yur satellites last lnger and t use fewer f them — that is the engineering challenge that we are nw facing, and I dn’t see anyne really taking that up.”

Unfrtunately, such achievements didn’t cme cheap. Due t the frantic(疯狂的)pace f his research, Huang was absent frm his father’s funeral, and even his wn cancer went undetected as he had n time t see a dctr. T sum up, Huang sacrificed everything fr his research, and I think mre peple shuld hnur him.
(Chen Xueyin, Fujian)I want t tell everyne abut tw teachers n Changyu Island, Wang Kaiquan and Lin Zhujin.
Few peple knw abut this hmetwn f mine. The island is beautiful, but it’s quite islated, and there aren’t many mdern cnveniences. In bad weather, even ur water and pwer supplies are unstable. Peple wh have never been t ur island are ften surprised by this and find it hard t adjust. Many wh live n the island dream f leaving. These tw primary schl teachers, hwever, have stayed n fr 23 lng years!

A heritage language is a language that isn’t the “mst pwerful” language f an area, but is still learned by children in their hmes (thus, it’s their heritage). Any language can be a heritage language, depending n the surrunding scial cntext. English, fr example, is ften a primary language, but culd technically be a heritage language if smene’s English-speaking parents mved frm, say, the United Kingdm t Japan
Heritage languages can be smene’s native language, but the tw terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language r languages a persn learns when they’re very yung while heritage languages can be determined by a brad range f scial and cultural factrs. Usually, peple speak their native language very well. Smene’s abilities in their heritage language can vary quite a bit, hwever. Sme peple may master it well because they learned it a lt when they were children, while thers may speak it but nt read it, and still thers may struggle with speaking it at all.
The United States has ver 56 millin Spanish speakers, and a large part f thse are heritage learners f the language. A research fund that the percentage f peple wh reprt speaking Spanish “well” drps frm 91 t 82 fr first-and secnd-generatin immigrants (移民). While that might seem small, it gets much mre bvius after that, with third-and furth-generatin immigrants drpping t 47 percent.
There are a cuple f reasns why heritage languages — and Spanish in particular — tends t drp ff frm generatin t generatin. The first ne is that the heritage language is less imprtant t get arund in sciety. When a persn needs the majrity language t g t schl, get a jb and interact with mst peple arund them, it’s nt surprising that the heritage language might seem less imprtant. Anther reasn is sme parents encurage their children nt t use their heritage language. It’s unfrtunate but true that speaking anther language is still a cause fr discriminatin (歧视) tday.
Heritage languages may have a hard time lasting frm generatin t generatin, but it’s nt nly a stry f decline (衰弱). There are cuntless peple in the wrld wh g ut f their way t learn their heritage languages — sme learn the heritage language later in life — and help thers t d the same. If yu’ve ever thught abut recnnecting with a heritage language, it’s never t late t get started. There’s n time like the present.

A.The imprtance f learning heritage languages when little.
B.The variatins in peple’s abilities t speak heritage languages.
C.The differences between heritage languages and native languages.
D.The similarities between the brad range f scial and cultural factrs.
34.What is ne reasn fr the drp f Heritage languages in the US?
A.Appearance discriminatinB.Generatin gap.
C.Varying cultures.D.Lsing ppularity.
35.What can we knw frm the last paragraph?
A.Parents play a key rle in prtecting heritage languages.
B.Heritage languages’ difficult time will end in the near future.
C.Effrts have been made twards the heritage languages’ survival.

Vlunteering: a Rewarding Experience
Last summer, I spent every Saturday mrning at Sunshine Nursing Hme. The air there always carried a faint scent f chrysanthemums frm the garden. Arriving at 8 ’clck, I swept leaves in the yards, arranged dnated bks n shelves, and sat with elderly residents wh ften waited by the windw. 36 Mrs. Li, 82, shared stries f her yuth — like meeting her husband at a twn fair; I listened while she mended ld clthes. I am Derek frm the US. It’s the first time that I’ve travelled t China. Amazingly, I’ve gt t knw that China has a rich heritage f distinctive brcades (织锦), each reflecting the artistry and traditins f different regins. 56 (example) include Yunjin brcade frm Nanjing in East China’s Jiangsu Prvince, knwn fr its luxurius silk threads and gld weaving and Su brcade frm Suzhu in Jiangsu prvince, 57 (admire) fr its fine embridery (刺绣) and delicate patterns.
These brcades, ften assciated with the ryal family and high sciety, shw China’s mastery f textile (纺织品) art, 58 has develped with technlgical advancements and cultural influences.
When digging deeper I’ve fund that Li brcade is 59 rare, ancient textile traditin that has remained 60 (large) unchanged fr ver 3,000 years. Eleanr was a thin wman with silver hair like silk thread, always seated by the windw where the sunlight painted sft gld acrss her lap. Arund her neck hung a bright red scarf — vivid and alive, in cntrast t the stillness arund her. Fr days, Eleanr hardly spke, nly ndding plitely when Ava greeted her. But Ava kept cming back, her curisity grwing with each quiet visit.
Then ne rainy afternn, Eleanr finally spke. Her vice, lw and srrwful, carried the weight f ld music. She tld Ava abut her sister, Rse — a jazz singer in 1950s New Yrk, ambitius and energetic. “She believed red made peple listen,” Eleanr murmured (小声说), tuching the scarf. “And she always sang as if she were chasing the stars.”
The sisters had nce dreamed f perfrming tgether, but life had pulled them apart. Eleanr chse quiet, while Rse chse applause (掌声). They never made peace befre Rse’s sudden passing. All Rse had left was this scarf — and a flded page f music Rse had begun writing fr Eleanr, never finished.
Feeling mved, Ava studied the faded ntes, each line uttering half-spken emtin. At hme, she sat at her pian and played until Rse’s meldy fund its ending. It wasn't perfect, but it felt hnest.
When Ava played it fr Eleanr the fllwing week, the elderly wman clsed her eyes, her lips trembling. “I almst heard her,” she whispered. “That was her yurs.”
Sn came the annuncement: The senir center’s autumn cncert was cming. Eleanr suddenly turned t Ava, her hand resting n the red scarf. “If I wear it,” she said, “wuld yu accmpany my singing n the pian?” Ava frze. She had never perfrmed fr anyne befre. But she agreed.

【原文】 Hell, I’m Jeff Andersn frm Cventry, England, and in tday’s prgram I’d like t share with yu my experience in Ri Carnival, Brazil. The mment I gt ff the flight, I culd feel it already. The carnival was in the air with the summer heat. N wnder peple frm Ri take a week ff fr this happy ccasin. T experience the spirit f the carnival, I went t a street party. Luckily, I arrived just in time. The shw was abut t begin as I tk my place in the merry crwd. A grup f arund 20 Brazilian dancers and a band in fancy cstumes were standing in the street, sme f them carrying flags which blew in the wind. Then there was an explsin f bright clrs and lively music, and the grup jumped int actin. The band started playing in energetic samba beat. The dancers twisted and turned, and the crwd began t cheer, clap and sing. The whle grup started marching dwn the street. The carnival current carried us thrugh the ever grwing sea f peple dancing all the way and passing wave after wave f street stands. Ice bxes f sft drinks and beer lined the narrw streets with the smell f rasted meat filling the air. I was s caught up in the party fever that I hardly nticed five hurs flew by. Even as I lay in bed that evening, the bright clrs and lively music were still swimming all arund me. Hw amazing the Ri carnival is.

On the night f the cncert, Eleanr std n the stage, wearing the red scarf and Ava sat at the pian. Eleanr’s hands trembled slightly, but her eyes sparkled under the sft lights. Beside her, Ava’s fingers rested abve the keys, heart punding in her chest. With a deep breath, Eleanr ndded, and Ava began t play. The meldy flwed gently at first, then sared as Eleanr’s vice, fragile yet full f emtin, jined in. Thugh her singing wasn’t always steady, each nte carried the weight f a lng-buried memry. As they sang, time faded away — tw generatins jined by ne sng, at last cmplete.
