Fr Edward Kankaka, life didn’t have an easy start. Brn in Uganda, he lst his father befre turning fur, having t be raised by his grandmther. On the ther side f the wrld, Bruce and Margaret Anschau, an Australian cuple, had made a prmise. Fr every kid they had, they wuld spnsr (资助) ne in need. Thrugh a charity rganizatin, they learned abut little Edward, supprting him thrugh many years. And nw, ver 30 years later, they finally gt t meet in persn.
Kankaka, wh is nw 36 years ld, grew up t be an HIV research scientist wh studies at Jhn Hpkins University. After learning he had t attend a medical meeting in Australia, he made a plan t visit the Anschaus in their hmetwn. “It’s like meeting a family yu had never seen,” Kankaka said.
The family, wh had been spnsring Kankaka since 1995, had held nt every single letter and picture sent by him. Thugh studies have nt directly cmpared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are mre wrried abut single-use plastics because f hw they’re made. A single-use plastic water bttle sheds micrplastics int yur water when yu refill it, and a takeut cntainer r frzen meal tray (托盘) sheds these particles int yur fd. Chemical expsure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a micrwave, a dishwasher r even by placing ht fd in a takeut cntainer. When heated, mlecules (分子) mve faster, meaning it culd be easier fr sme f them t make its way int yur fd.
The danger f heating yur plastic als applies t reusable plastic, like baby bttles and plastic strage cntainers, accrding t Judith Enck, president f Beynd Plastics.
