Cambridge Dictinary Wrd f the Year 2025
The Cambridge Dictinary Wrd f the Year 2025 is "parascial", which means invlving r relating t a cnnectin that smene feels between themselves and a famus persn they d nt knw, a character in a bk, film, TV series, etc., r an artificial intelligence.
As scial media 31 the intimacy that fans feel with their adred celebrities, and with the rise in ppularity f AI cmpanins that can take n persnalities, the wrd fr these ne - way relatinships - parascial - is having its wn 32 .
A 33 trend in increased searches fr parascial had already begun, driven in part by debate n scial platfrms abut the ethics f marketers and influencers wh take advantage f parascial relatinships.
But in June, lkups als surged due t media 34 abut Meta and OpenAI and the ptential effect f their chatbts n children and mental health. By September f 2025, the Cambridge Dictinary definitin f parascial was 35 t include the pssibility f a relatinship with an artificial intelligence.
In August, glbal cverage f the way in which Taylr Swift annunced her 36 t Travis Kelce caused lkups f parascial t surge as the media dissected fans' reactins. Psts by fans say "I'm nt being parascial abut it" and talk abut "a Swiftie being parascial fr ten minutes 37 ".
Parascial 38 ut in 2025 fr several reasns. Public interest in the term increased massively this year, as we can see frm ur data: the number f searches fr it in the Cambridge Dictinary as well as n Ggle spiked n several ccasins. It's interesting frm a language pint f view because it has made the 39 frm an academic term t ne used by rdinary peple in their scial media psts. And it als captures the zeitgeist f 2025, as the public's fascinatin with celebrities and their lifestyles cntinues t reach new 40 .

      A Wman's Wrk
Wmen have made great strides in the emplyment market ver the past 50 years. But many still feel that their prgress is 41 and, t cincide with Internatinal Wmen's Day, tw new bks by feminist writers address the issues.
In The Fix, Michelle King, directr f inclusin at Netflix, bserves that wmen are cnstantly tld they need t change themselves. 42 , she argues, wrking practices shuld change t accmmdate the needs f half the adult ppulatin. In The Hme Stretch, Sally Hward, a jurnalist, suggests that a big reasn why wmen are 43 is that even thse wh wrk full - time are still expected t d the bulk(大量) f the husewrk. She makes a strng case "why it's time t cme 44 abut wh des the dishes".
Are wmen in the wrkplace judged by the same 45 as their male clleagues? Are
they 46 with adjectives (aggressive r emtinal, fr example) that wuld nt be applied t men with the same characteristics?
Despite recent 47 , wmen still face a glass ceiling. A cuple f stries in Ms. King's bk illustrate the pint. Sarah was an executive at a multinatinal wh wrked late, underwent management training and 48 received and acted n feedback. After many years f 49 , it seemed she was due fr prmtin t the next tier, which was 100% male. But at the key meeting a male executive said: "I dn't knw; she just desn't fit. She has thse glasses and she wears that clip in her hair." What he did was nt exactly " 50 management".
In the ther tale Ms. King, n her first day in a new jb. walked int a kitchen full f men. Her bss said "Hey, Michelle, there are dishes in the sink and yu are a wman, s wash them." When she 51 , she was tld t learn t take a jke. Bullying 52 as humr is still bullying.
Smetimes the 53 fr the lack f female prgress in certain prfessins is that wmen and men naturally chse t pursue different career paths. Yet thse utcmes may simply be the result f frmal r infrmal barriers against female success. At the end f the 19th century, when nly 4 - 5% f American dctrs were wmen, sme men n dubt put this dwn t a lack f gift. Many medical schls, perhaps sharing that precnceptin, did nt 54 female candidates.
Many f the arguments that wmen's lack f prgress is dwn t aptitude r chice lk like a cnvenient fictin fr men, wh d rather well ut f the 55 . Wmen, wh end up ding mst f the chres as well as wrking lng hurs, get an unfair deal. It is nt them wh need t change - it is the attitudes f men.

Her intrductin t the literary wealth f Greece gave me a new perspective n my war-trn hmeland, making me prud f my rigins. Her effrts inspired me t understand the lgic and structure f the English language. Owing t her inspiratin, during my next twenty-five years, I became a jurnalist by prfessin.
Miss Hurd retired at the age f 62. By then, she had taught fr a ttal f 41 years. Even after her retirement, she cntinually made a prject f unwilling students in whm she spied a spark f ptential. The students were mainly frm the mst trubled hmes, yet she alternately "bullied" and "charmed" them with her wn special brand f tugh lve, until the spark caught fire.
Miss Hurd was the ne wh directed my grief and pain int writing. But fr Miss Hurd, I wuldn't have becme a reprter. She was the catalyst that sent me int jurnalism and indirectly caused all the gd things that came after.

The health benefits f having a pet—especially a dg—are well - established. Dg wners have been shwn t live lnger, healthier lives than peple withut pups, in part because caring fr a dg encurages physical activity. And pets f all types have been shwn t lwer their wners' stress levels and imprve their mental health.
But a new research letter published in JAMA Surgery ffers a lk at a ptential dwnside f pet wnership. Amng lder adults, fractures(骨折) linked t dg - walking are surprisingly cmmn and grwing mre frequent, accrding t the research.
Researchers examined data frm the Natinal Electrnic Injury Surveillance System, which lgs injuries reprted by patients visiting a natinally representative grup f 100 U.S. hspital emergency rms. In 2004, almst 1,700 adults aged 65 and lder went t the emergency rm fr fractures related t walking leashed dgs, they fund. By 2017, that number had risen t almst 4,500.

Dr. Jaim Ahn, an assciate prfessr at the University f Pennsylvania Schl f Medicine, says the reasns behind the rise are likely psitive, even if the end result—mre injuries—is nt.
"Peple intuitively knw many f the benefits f animal cmpaninship," Ahn said. "Nt surprisingly, pet wnership has increased ver time, including amng the elderly, wh are living lnger and making effrts t live healthier—all gd things."
Still, the research suggests that the risks f pet wnership shuldn't be ignred, especially fr lder adults. Almst 30% f the injured senirs in the paper were admitted t the hspital, and nearly 20% suffered hip fractures. This type f fracture is "assciated with lng - term decreases in quality f life and functinal capabilities," the authrs write.
"As we get lder, we shuld cnsider bth the risks and benefits f the physical activity we desire and make sure we're safely and thughtfully up fr the challenge," Ahn says.
Dg - walking ffers senirs a valuable pprtunity t assess—and, if necessary, imprve—their wn strength, walking ability and verall well - being, he says, as well as their dg's behavir.
"There are s many benefits frm pet wnership, but just like everything else, there are negatives t ptentially cnsider," Ahn says.

One cncern is that intrducing digital mney apps t yung children culd help t encurage irrespnsible spending habits. 70 “Plus, it is imprtant fr kids t learn and make mistakes, If yu’re ging t make a mistake f 10 punds at eight, it’s better than making a mistake f 1,000 punds when yu’re 28,” Guichard says.

      The Lst Cntinent f Icelandia
Present - day Iceland culd mark the tip f an ancient lst cntinent, accrding t a new thery by an internatinal grup f scientists. Iceland is an island in the nrthern Atlantic Ocean that measures rughly 300 miles 1 200 miles and is famus fr its vlcanes and ht springs. It sits n the mid - Atlantic rift(裂缝), a lng crack 2 (lie) mstly beneath the cean. Alng the rift, plates that frm the Earth’s rcky crust(地壳) are pulling apart. At the same time, underwater vlcanes create new rck t fill the gap.
Over the past 200 millin years, these separating plates have created a lw - lying area between Eurpe and Nrth American 3 is nw filled by the cean—but why des Iceland stick up in the middle? Mst experts think that the island frmed in the past 60 millin years 4 layers f rck built up ver a “ht spt” f vlcanic eruptins. Hwever, sme say the crust beneath Iceland is far t thick 5 (frm) in this way—it’s mre like the crust beneath cntinents that builds up ver billins f years.
When a team led by Prfessr Gillian Fulger, frm Durham University, England, lked at maps f the sea flr, they nticed 6 Iceland sits n a brad, raised ridge(山脊) that extends t its east and west. “If the sea level drpped 600 meters, then we wuld see a lt mre land abve the surface f the cean,” explained Fulger. She and her clleagues think that this ridge 7 mark the remains f a large landmass, nicknamed Icelandia, that was six times the size present - day Iceland and nce 8 (cnnect) Eurpe with Nrth America. Arund 10 millin years ag, they suggest, the eastern and western sides sank belw the waves, leaving the island 9 (cut) ff. The new idea, hwever, 10 (nt supprt) by everyne. Dubters pint t signs that the crust n the ridge was created by the same vlcanic eruptins as the rest f the Atlantic sea bed.

Catania Turns the Tables n Blue Crabs
In a suburb f Catania n Sicily’s east cast, smke rises frm street stalls grilling hrse meat, while yungsters gather arund cunters selling seltz limne e sale — a sda drink with lemn and sea salt. Amid this lively scene, a family f ex - fishers, the Salamnes, have pened La Fish, a seafd restaurant that dares t challenge lcal diet traditins. Alngside Sicily’s classics like swrdfish(剑鱼) and tuna, tnight’s tasting menu features a surprising newcmer t the island’s tables — the Atlantic blue crab.
These blue - clawed, live - shelled crabs, riginally frm the western Atlantic Ocean, have becme an eclgical threat in the Mediterranean. Withut natural enemies, they feed n yung clams, destrying shellfish harvests and destrying Italy’s reputatin as ne f the wrld’s tp clam prducers. Their rapid spread has been linked t rising sea temperatures, which have made Sicilian waters increasingly welcming t nn - native species. What began as an envirnmental cncern is gradually turning int a test f human adaptability.
Peple in Sicily are respnding in creative ways. One frm f respnse cmes frm chef Mari Cntadin, wh celebrates the crab’s sweet and delicate flavr. He serves it n sticky sushi rice with nins, bell peppers, garlic, tmates, celery, and edible(可食用的) flwers t appeal t hesitant lcals. “Catania peple can be clsed - minded,” he admits, “but that first bite des nt lie.” Anther respnse cmes frm scientists. Marine bilgist Francesc Tiralng f the University f Catania argues that embracing such nn - native species in lcal diets is “a necessary respnse t climate change and eclgical challenges.”
Scial acceptance is fllwing slwly but steadily. In the fish market behind Piazza del Dum, shpkeeper Rsari nw sells 20 kilgrams f blue crab a day, saying custmers lve its taste. Meanwhile, the Salamne family turns the utsider int pprtunity: by presenting blue crab as a fancy fd, they shw that “anything can be edible.”
