A tree has rts. Peple have rts t. If yu get t the rt f a prblem, yu will slve it. It’s the same thing with wrds. Dig deeply int a big, unfamiliar wrd and yu will understand where it came frm.
As readers, especially thse reading in a secnd language, we need t deal with the text as if we were detectives lking fr infrmatin t unlck the unknwn. Like any gd detective arriving n the crime scene, the first thing t d when meeting a new and difficult wrd is t judge the situatin, t lk at everything that is knwn and see if it helps us t understand what it means.
As yu knw, prefixes and suffixes can be added t the beginning r end f wrds t change the meaning. Knw them, and yu will have the wrd building pwer. But rt wrds are the key. Take time t learn a few f these, put them in yur memry, and yu will becme a master wrd detective.
Let’s lk at ne cmmn rt wrd used in English. “Alter” frm the Latin wrd means “ther”. When yu meet this rt wrd, yu knw that the bigger wrd has smething t d with “ther”. Examine the wrd “alternate”. Can yu find the Latin rt in it?
· If yu and yur friend like t eat ut, first yu pay and the ther pays the next time. Yu are alternating paying.
· If yu g t the mvies n alternate Saturdays, yu g n ne Saturday, but nt the ther Saturday.
· If yu have n alternative, yu have n ther chice.
Learn as many rt wrds as pssible in the language yu are studying. Then use yur “rting fr wrds” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard wrk are always paid back.
1. If Jim and Lily g t the mvies, which ne belw is “alternating paying”?
A. Jim pays every time.B. They each pay half.
C. They take turns paying.D. Their parents pay fr them.

What is the mst shcking abut the heatwave affecting the Pacific Nrthwest is nt that it has hit a usually mild area, nr that s many lng-standing temperature recrds are being brken. It is that thse recrds are being brken by such large margins (幅度). As many as 70,000 peple died due t a heatwave in Eurpe in 2003.
Heat als kills by wrsening health cnditins such as heart prblems, s nt all the deaths it causes may be directly attributed(归因)t it. Climate change will make heatwaves mre cmmn and mre extreme. Even if greenhuse-gas emissins are cut t zer by the middle f this century, temperatures will g n rising fr decades. S ther measures are needed t prtect peple against extreme heat.
Gvernments can set up early warning systems t alarm health wrkers, shut dwn schls and stp utdr activities. They can prvide the public with frecasts f cming heatwaves, explanatins f the dangers and detailed advice n what t d. Imprved facilities can als help. This includes prviding shaded areas, water parks and “misting statins” t help peple cl dwn, and get t air-cnditined “cling centers”where they can find shelter and sleep if necessary.
The wrld is, undubtedly, facing a big health challenge right nw. There is n excuse fr ignring heatwaves and their effects.

Feeling discuraged after a favrite shw ends is cmmn, and it even has an unfficial term: pst-series depressin (PSD). Rita Kttasz, a marketing prfessr at Kingstn University, defines PSD as “a feeling f emptiness and upset when smething yu lve finishes”. This applies t TV shws, bks, r vide games, creating a desire fr mre.
The cncept f PSD gained ppularity n scial media and fan blgs in the mid-2010s, particularly during the Glden Age f TV. Kttasz prefers nt t use the term PSD, instead calling it “cnsumer saudade”, a Prtuguese wrd meaning nstalgic (怀旧的) lnging. Hwever, a jurnal editr cnvinced her t use PSD due t its established use utside f research.
Kttasz and her clleagues published a 15-item classificatin scale fr PSD based n interviews with fans wh felt sad after their favrite things ended. Cmmn emtins included frustratin, disappintment, sadness, and emptiness. Sme fans even felt that life was less cmplete r that they had lst “best friends”.
While PSD is ften assciated with TV shws, Kttasz is explring its cnnectin t ther media, such as the abrupt break f K-pp band BTS (防弹少年团) and nvels like Harry Ptter. Yunger peple are mre affected than lder nes, partially due t n-demand streaming and cnstant new cntent pushes frm businesses like Netflix.
Cntrary t ppular belief, binge-watching des nt seem t trigger PSD. Instead, lng-term cnsumptin may be a factr. Kttasz thinks watching a shw ver several seasns r reading nvels acrss many years strengthens a persn’s relatinship t the characters. In her 2019 paper, she cites a Harry Ptter devtee wh started reading the series at age 9 and was “cruelly left behind’ after the final bk and film released years later.
But it isn’t quite as simple as saying the end f a shw r nvel cntrls ur emtinal state. Brian Kng, a Chicag-based psychlgist, is cncerned that PSD might imply a causal relatinship between lw mds and a prgram’s end. Instead, he says that when viewers feel lasting negativity, TV cnsumptin might be acting as an anesthetic(麻醉剂) fr a deeper psychlgical issue, like hw sme peple with anxiety r depressin drink alchl. Put anther way, the lw md already existed, and watching the series nly masked it.
7. Which f the fllwing is a cmmn reaetin amng fans experiencing PSD?
A. A fresh sense f purpse fr life.B. A deep satisfactin after the shw.
C A great sense f lss f best friends.D. A strng desire fr a new hbby
8. What des the underlined wrd “binge-watching” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reviewing every detail f a TV shw day and night.
B. Watching sme episdes f a TV shw in ne sitting.
C. Fllwing the episdes f a TV shw fr a lng duratin.
D. Reading a bk series while watching the TV adaptatin.
9. What des Brian Kng imply in the last paragraph?
A. PSD cvers up a deeper psychlgical issue.
B. Viewers with negativity like drinking alch.
C. TV cnsumptin is the rt cause f lw mds
D. Watching TV series can address psychlgical issues.
10. What might the fllwing paragraphs fcus n?
A. The slutins t pst-series depressin.
B. The marketing strategies f TV shws.
C. The difference between PSD and nstalgla.
D. The impact f scial media n fan emtins.
