This summer, I paid my 12-year-ld daughter $100 t read a bk. I can’t say I am prud — but I am extremely satisfied, because the plan wrked.
My daughter is a smart kid. But until I ffered her cash, she’d never read a whle chapter bk (章节书) fr pleasure. She’d read bks fr schl, but getting her t d that was like pulling teeth. And n her wn, she’d read a few cmic nvels and listened t sme audi bks. Unfrtunately, nne f thse activities led t a habit f classic deep reading.
I tld her that she needed t read because nvels are the greatest way t understand peple’s minds. She said she culd learn mre frm watching the peple she fllwed n a scial medium (媒体).
I said bks ffered strytelling. She said, “The Internet.”
I said bks taught histry. She said “The Internet.”
I culd nt win ur debates, because few f my daughters’ ideas against reading seemed wrng t me. Yes, reading is a way t braden yur universe and discver new wrlds — but s is the Internet.
But fr thse f us wh are lifelng readers — wh hld in ur minds like friends the ideas and characters we’ve cllected ver the years frm the printed page — we all knw that reading enriches ur experiences. As Neil Pstman wrte in “The Disappearance f Childhd”, by its nature, a screen-based medium like TV r vide must fill in all the blanks (空白) fr yu. But bks leave space fr blanks — and fr the inner inventin they can inspire.
S I decided t cut thrugh all the reasning with a cld means: cash. I tld my12-year-ld I wuld pay her $100 t read a nvel within a mnth. She said, “What? Really?” Then, f curse, she said yes. On the seventh day, she finished the bk and asked fr anther ne, then finished that ne in abut tw weeks — at n extra charge.
Will this lead t a lng reading life full f bks that she will cme t see as friends, teachers and cheerleaders? I dn’t knw. What I d knw is that my daughter nw has $100 wrth f new sprts suits. I als knw that tgether, we finally pened a dr fr her t the printed page that I imagine — I hpe — will serve her fr a lifetime. That feels like the best mney I ever spent.
