In Washingtn, D. C., early in the mrning, Stephanie Haley, a vlunteer, is walking thrugh the city’s dwntwn, lking fr birds that might have cllided (碰撞) with windws. On the sidewalk next t an ffice building, there is an live-green sngbird. It’s an Acadian flycatcher, n dubt n its way t Central r Suth America when it hit a windw.
This scene is repeated acrss the cuntry. Each year, up t a billin birds are killed by windw cllisins in the US. Mst f these birds are migrating (迁徙), flying at speeds f up t 30 miles per hur when they hit the glass. Fr birds, glass — whether clear r reflective — presents a majr danger, and this is especially true in cities, where buildings are full f glass.
Each night during the migratin seasn, hundreds f millins f birds take t the skies, flying thrugh the night t take advantage f the evening’s cl, stable air. They navigate with the help f the mn and the stars, and cme dwn in the mrning t rest. That’s when they can meet glass, which they dn’t knw hw t avid. If it’s clear, they think they can fly thrugh it. If it’s reflective, they can mistake the reflectins fr real trees and sky. These cllisins happen mstly near the grund, nt high in the air.
The issue gained natinal attentin after hundreds f birds died in ne night at McCrmick Place in Chicag in 2023. This event led t a meeting f experts, wh frmed the Bird cllisin Preventin Alliance. Their gal is t find better ways t prtect birds frm glass. In Chicag, using special films n windws can reduce (减少) bird cllisins by up t 95%.
Hmewners can als help by treating their windws. By taking small actins, like cvering windws, peple can reduce bird deaths at hme. These effrts may nt fix the prblem entirely, but they are a step in the right directin fr saving millins f birds.
      24. Where des the vlunteer find the Acadian flycatcher?
      A. At an ffice.B. On the driveway.C. At her huse.D. On the sidewalk.

      C. They fail t recgnize glass.D. They fly t high while migrating.
      26. Hw d the birds fly at night during the migratin seasn?
      A. They use the mn and stars.B. They lk fr trees in the cuntry.
      C. They fllw the lights in cities.D. They turn t ther animals fr help.
      27. Which best describes the act f applying special films t windws t save birds?
      A. Difficult.B. Wrkable.C. Pintless.D. Expensive.

The Sahara Desert is ne f the driest places n Earth, receiving nly abut 3 inches f rainfall each year. This is just ne-tenth f what cities like Chicag experience. Hwever, scientists frm the University f Illinis Chicag predict (预测) that the Sahara culd becme significantly wetter in the latter half f the 21st century.
Their findings suggest that the Sahara culd receive up t 75% mre rainfall cmpared with its histrical average. The researchers als prject that sutheastern and suth-central Africa might receive mre rain, especially under extreme climate (气候) cnditins.
“Changing rainfall patterns (模式) will affect billins f peple, bth in and utside Africa,” said lead authr Thierry Ndetatsin Taguela, a climate expert. “We have t start planning t face these changes, frm fld management t drught-resistant crps.”
Taguela pinted ut that understanding hw rising temperatures impact rainfall is imprtant fr develping strategies t deal with these changes. In the study, he used 40 climate mdels t predict summer rainfall acrss Africa in the secnd half f the 21st century (2050 — 2099) cmpared with the histrical perid (1965 — 2014).
The mdels shwed that rainfall ver Africa will generally increase by the end f the 21st century. Ntably, the Sahara Desert is expected t receive 75% mre rainfall, sutheastern Africa will see a 25% increase, and suth-central Africa will experience a 17% rise in rainfall.
“It is surprising fr the Sahara t nearly duble its histrical rainfall,” Taguela said. “But while mst mdels agree n the verall trend f wetter cnditins, there’s still uncertainty abut hw much the rainfall will actually increase. Upgrading these mdels is key t making reliable predictins.”
Fr the mst part, these prjected changes are related t the effects f climate change, as higher temperatures help the atmsphere hld mre misture, which in turn leads t rainfall. At the same time, changes in wind patterns als play a part in affecting rainfall.
      28. What did the research shw abut the Sahara Desert?
      A. It wuld remain the driest place.B. It wuld turn int a liveable land.
      C. It wuld experience less rainfall.D. It wuld becme wetter than ever.
      29. What did Taguela want t stress in paragraph 3?
      A. Climate change is an avidable issue.B. Extreme climate cnditins are a repeat.
      C. We have t prepare fr changes in rainfall.D. Rainfall patterns are usually unbelievable.
      30. What can we knw abut the climate mdels in the study?
      A. They are crrect and true.B. They need imprving.
      C. They erase public dubts.D. They make little sense.
      31. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
      A. The frces behind rainfall.B. The changes in climate patterns.
      C. The predicted rise in rainfall.D. The impact f cluds n rainfall.
