But with the strm frecast t miss them by mre than 100 miles, many lcal peple, including surf instructr Marty Thmas, 52, stayed put. Then, just befre nightfall, anther massive strm made a hle in the twn’s seawalls, dumping water int the streets. Thmas watched it grw frm nthing t ankle high in minutes. He rushed t warn his neighbrs in the single-stry, six-unit cmplex where he lived.
Thmas kncked n the dr f an elderly neighbr wh was battling cancer, then helped him ut f his bed and int his jeep. Thmas als wke tw remaining neighbrs, wh quickly piled int their wn jeep alng with their pets. Mments later, they sped ff, with water nearly t their headlights. Then Thmas nticed that rising water began spilling thrugh the windws f his hme. He picked ut a strng 12-ft paddle bard (冲浪救生板), std up n the bard and paddled thrugh dark, flded streets t the huse, where 56-year ld science teacher Andersn was stuck with her dg. Thmas tried the dr, but the great weight f the water made it impssible t pen.
"G t the windw n the side!" he shuted. Andersn walked back t her bedrm and pened the windw. Thmas climbed inside and helped Andersn and her dg ut f the huse. With the dg n the nse f the bard and Andersn hanging n t the side, Thmas swam them acrss the street t a twnhuse, where Andersn climbed t safety.
That night he had rescued 10 residents f the twn where he’d grwn up. Peple called him the angel f Indian Rcks Beach. "He put himself in danger t save ur lives," Andersn. said. Thmas said, "It was a little hairy, but I was able t surf in big waves. Anyway, they were my neighbrs."

Fr mst f the histry f scientific study f language, schlars have tended t fcus n written language, in large part because that’s what they had recrds f. But nce recrdings f cnversatin became available, they culd begin t study spken language the same way as writing. When they did, they fund that interjectins-that is, shrt sunds f just a wrd r tw such as um, huh? and mm-hmm, which are nt part f a larger sentence-were very cmmn in everyday speech.
"One in every seven spken wrds is ne f these things," says Dingemanse, wh explres the use f interjectins. "Yu’re ging t find ne f thse little guys flying by every 12 secnds. Clearly, we need them," he adds. That need seems t be universal. In a survey f 31 languages arund the wrld, Dingemanse finds that all f them use a shrt prnunciatin similar t huh? as a repair signal, prbably because it’s quick t prduce. "In that mment f difficulty, yu’re ging t need the simplest pssible questin wrd, and that’s what huh? is," he says.
Other interjectins wrk as "cntinuers" such as mm-hmm, made frm the listeners t shw that they’re paying attentin and the speaker shuld keep ging. Once again, the frm f the wrd is well suited t its functin. Because mm-hmm is made with a clsed muth, it’s clear that the speaker des nt want t speak.
Cntinuers really matter t a cnversatin. In ne experiment, 34 students were listening as anther vlunteer tld them a stry. Sme f the listeners gave the usual "T’m listening" signals, while thers wh had been asked t cunt the number f wrds beginning with the letter "t", were t distracted t d s. The lack f nrmal signals frm the listeners led t the stries that were prly tld by the speaker. That shws that these little wrds are quite imprtant and they really d a lt fr understanding and cnversatin.
      28. Which f the fllwing is an interjectin?
      A. Yes. B. Srry. C. Um. D. Okay.
      29. What may the interjectin "huh?" indicate?
      A. Curisity. B. Questin. C. Disappintment. D. Attentin.
      30. What d "cntinuers" remind the speaker t d?
      A. Express the ideas. B. Repair the mistakes.
      C. Change the tpic. D. Keep telling stries.
      31. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. Rles f interjectins. B. Uses f wrds.
      C. Functins f sunds. D. Signals f talks.
      D
Dzens f cities acrss the glbe have recently experienced water shrtages. In the next five years, the wrld’s demand fr fresh water will be greater than supply, accrding t a United Natins frecast. Nw researchers are turning t an unexpected surce fr a slutin: the bttm f the cean.
Called undersea desalinatin (脱盐), the idea is t remve the salt frm water in the deep sea. If it wrked n a large scale, the technlgy culd make the wrld’s water prblems less serius. Csts and energy requirements have kept desalinatin frm ging mainstream in mst f the wrld. Early desalinatin invlved bth biling seawater and making it int the steam, a methd that used lts f energy. This methd was later replaced by multistage flash distillatin (蒸馏), in which temperature and pressure "flash" salt water int steam. In the past 25 years, reverse smsis (反渗透) has becme mre cmmn. This prcess uses high water pressure t push seawater thrugh a filter film (过滤膜) with hles s small that nly water passes thrugh, leaving salt behind.
Reverse smsis is mre efficient than distillatin, but it takes a lt f energy t frce millins f gallns f seawater t g thrugh filter films. What if we culd let that mvement happen naturally by making use f the pressure hundreds f meters underwater? That’s the idea behind undersea desalinatin. Reverse smsis devices are put under water t depths f arund 500 meters (1,600 feet), where great pressure des the hard wrk f separating water frm salt. Fresh water withut salt is then pumped back t shre.
Given the depths required, undersea desalinatin wn’t wrk in just any seaside lcatin. Many castal cities lie n wide cntinental shelves, meaning deep water is far ffshre. Castlines with steep drp-ffs are ideal because shallw shelves will require lng pipelines, adding t capital and peratinal csts. It’s predicted that undersea desalinatin will g mainstream and supply water t sme castal cities in the near future.
      32. Why d researchers turn t the sea fr fresh water?
      A. T meet the increasing need. B. T explre new water surce.
      C. T supprt far-ffshre cities. D. T keep up with develpment.
      33. Hw is salt remved in undersea desalinatin?
      A. By separating water frm salt in chemical ways.
      B. By making seawater int steam and then cl it.
      C. By using water pressure t filter salt naturally.
      D. By pumping seawater t water treatment plants.
      34. What des the authr think abut the new technlgy?
      A. Challenging. B. Prmising. C. Inefficient.
      D. Impractical.
      35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. G Beynd. B. Pump Up. C. Reach Far. D. Drink Deep.

Mst f all, he’d talked excitedly abut the rbtics prgram, hlding a crumpled cardbard rbt he’d made: "Mm, they let students build frm the very beginning. Real mtrs, real wires! Let him create, nt just memrize." She remembered last weekend, when Ott was spreading Caulfield Schl’s pster n the flr, tracing rle-play phts, eyes shining like he was already there. She decided t give Ott the pwer t shape his wn future. In the meantime, she wuld try t gradually lsen her cntrl ver Ott and give him a bit mre independence. Because if there was ne thing she culd be abslutely certain f, it’s this: Ott wuld d best at the schl he wanted t g.
That night, Ott apprached his mm, hlding a DIY rbt ty in his hand. "Mm, yu’ll like this-nt all their hmewrk is n a screen," he said quietly. Mm met his wide hpeful eyes. "I just want what’s best fr yu," she said, thugh the "best" didn’t mean the same fr her and Ott. Ott stepped clser, small hands wrapping her arm. "Caulfield Schl is best fr me. I can make rbts, learn histry by acting and swim there. Please, Mm."

选项 G 中 “It als...” 与前文 “This flexibility keeps yu frm...”
选项 B 中 “These links” 指代 “study-wrkut links”, 指出 “关联让锻炼成自然部分,非额外任务”,呼应 “不占时间”;干扰项 E “每项 30 分钟” 与 “shrt activities”、 "dn’t take away study time" 矛盾, 故排除。

A 选项 in a rw(成行地)、C 选项 in a rush(急急忙忙)、D 选项 in a hurry (立刻) 均与混乱的使用状态无关, 故排除。
C 选项 harden(硬化)、D 选项 melt(融化)都不符合沙发的损坏情况,故排除。
      56. which 57. prduced 58. craftsmen 59. Traditinally 60. t create
      61. decrative 62. are passed 63. preserving 64. at 65. but
“which” 引导一个非限制性定语从句 “during which...”, 修饰前面的 “Paris Fashin Week”。
      64. at 考查介词, 固定搭配 “at risk f”, 意为 “面临……
这里连接两个并列的不定式结构 “t preserve these traditins” 和 “t reimagine them in mdern frms”, 构成 “不仅……
