Earth is filled with an amazing variety f creatures and an artist has put its diversity n display like never befre. Antn Thmas f New Zealand has created a hand-drawn map f the entire planet that features animals in their natural habitats.
His jurney began in childhd, drawing imaginary wrlds n his bedrm walls in Nelsn. Thmas, as a child, lnged fr a wrld where nature ruled dminant. His map represents the “ideal planet that I wanted,” Thmas said. “I wuld see all the huses, and imagine what it was like befre any humans shwed up.” After years wrking as a chef and musician, a chance request t decrate an ld fridge in Mntreal relighted his passin fr cartgraphy (制图学), launching an extrardinary career.
Thmas’s first majr prject, a massive map f Nrth America, cnsumed five years f his life. Wrking evenings after teaching jbs, he frequently redrew sectins as his skills imprved. “These represent real hmes, nt abstract (抽象的) art,” he stresses, explaining his thrugh apprach. The cmpleted wrk earned recgnitin frm Natinal Gegraphic and The New Yrk Times. Retired cartgrapher Tm Pattersn praises its uniqueness: n digital tls were used, just pencil and paper.
During the 2020 lckdwns, Thmas started his masterpiece: “Wild Wrld.” Three years, apprximately 2,602 wrking hurs and 1,642 animal species later, “Wild Wrld” is a hand-drawn map f ur planet that bth inspires and celebrates wnder. But hw much des witnessing gd affect us—and why? A new analysis f decades f research aimed t find ut the answers. The results suggest that ur acts f kindness and genersity, nline r ffline, can have meaningful ripple effects (连锁反应) in ur cmmunities.
Researchers cmbined results frm 88 studies invlving ver 25,000 participants t measure hw much ur wn kindness increases after witnessing smene acting generusly—fr example, cmfrting smene crying, dnating t charity, r acting cperatively in a cmpetitive game. In the studies, peple wuld read abut r see smene act in a kind way and then have the pprtunity t be kind and generus themselves.
The analysis shwed a reasnably strng effect, where peple witnessing kindness tended t act kindness themselves. “The message that the prscial (亲社会的) behavirs are quite infectius is a really imprtant message that peple shuld knw.” says the lead researcher, Haesung Jung.
Interestingly, her analyses shwed that it didn’t matter hw peple witnessed a kind act. They culd have read abut it, watched a TV shw, r actually been present when smene helped thers. It als desn’t matter whether r nt they saw smene giving material r nn-material help.
But there were factrs that did affect hw inspired peple were t pay it frward. The mre time that had passed since peple saw a selfless act, the lwer their mtivatin t help thers.
