My first thught? Sink int a czy sfa, please!
But as a new cmer, I needed t make friends. Or as my mum always said, “Lynsey, pen the envelpe (信封) if yu’ re invited.” And yu knw hw mums have a nasty (讨厌的) habit f being right.
S I said “Yes”. Anyway it was nly a walk—hw bad culd it be? Famus last wrds, eh?
“Great,” said the teacher, “See yu at the schl gate at 8:00 AM this Saturday and bring yur walking bts.”
But when we started ff, the walk was nt what I thught. I was expecting a nice peaceful saunter (闲逛) thrugh flwer fields, maybe a nice lunch.
N such luck.
And “trekking” is really the nly wrd fr it: we climbed up rcks, fught ur way thrugh trees, and slid dwn muddy slpes. Althugh I felt like the living dead, I made it because f the help and encuragement frm my classmates. On the bus ride back, my headteacher asked, “Enjy the trek, did we, Lynsey?” Upn hearing the questin, I thught t myself, “Yes, I did enjy it!” Finally, they even invited me t g n the next “walk”. We all knw that spending time with gd friends makes us happier. Scientists have even put this feeling t the test, and have fund that teen friendships have t d with psychlgical (心理的) well-being. A study f 108 high schl students in Australia fund that strng friendships were pretty helpful fr teens after a stressful event, such as failing a test. Teens being with friends were reprted t have lwer levels f sadness, jealusy, and wrry.
In fact, friendship nt nly prvides supprt in the shrt term, but als influences a persn in general in the lng run. The researchers interviewed 169 fifteen-year-ld teenagers, and tracked their prgress ver 10 years. Each year, these peple were als asked t d a survey testing their levels f anxiety, depressin (压抑), and self-wrth. As the results shwed, having clse bnds with friends wuld reduce peple’s levels f anxiety, depressin, and imprve self-wrth. In additin, anther study in the jurnal Child Develpment fund that having gd teenage friendships might help teens becme better parents in the future. This is because they shw mre empathy (同理心) t their clse friends, which helps them develp better parenting skills. Dr. Jessica A. Stern, in an interview with Psychlgy Tday, emphasized (强调), “When yu’re a teenager, clse friendships are an imprtant ‘training grund’ fr develping scial skills and learning hw t care fr thers in mre mature ways when yu grw up.”
Hwever, des having many friends necessarily mean mre happiness? In fact, having a lt f friends in ne’s friend circle desn’t always bring mental health benefits. Instead, having t many friends can smetimes lead t scial anxiety. The key t teen friendships lies nt in the number f friends, but in the clseness and quality f a few gd nes. It’s the deep understanding and being understd by anther persn that help teenagers develp necessary scial skills fr the future.
As we can see, friendships during teenage years play a key rle in psychlgical well-being. We always hpe that friendships last frever, even if it isn’t always the case. Develping clse teen friendships can pave the way fr a happier, mre wrthwhile life ahead.

Many peple hld the belief that the persnality yu have by yur 20s will stay the same and remain unchanged fr the rest f yur life. Hwever, research shws that with intentin and effrt, yu can develp new traits (特点) and imprve yurself thrughut yur lifetime.
Accrding t Mhsen Jshanl frm Keimyung University, “Persnality theries have emphasized the imprtance f the changing nature f persnality traits.” This suggests that yur persnality is nt fixed and can evlve. Jshanl further argues that a key factr in this slw prcess is having a sense f purpse.
The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) led by Jshanl, cllected data frm mre than11,000 adults ver fur perids (时期) between 2010 and 2022. Participants filled ut a 31-questin survey abut their persnality traits, assessing traits such as penness and agreeableness. They als finished a 7-item questinnaire abut feeling a sense f purpse, with questins like “I enjy making plans fr the future.” The results shwed that peple wh felt mre purpseful became mre pen t new things and less wrried ver time.
S, hw can yu develp a strnger sense f purpse in ur daily life? Jshanl suggests understanding and practicing the thery f “Purpse As Trait, Habit, and State” (PATHS). At the trait level, a sense f purpse can be viewed as an verall life gal. At the habit level, it invlves engaging in daily, purpseful behavirs. And at the state level, it describes the mment-t-mment feeling that ne’s actins are meaningful. Therefre, start with small actins.
T practice this “bttm-up” apprach, yu can start by adding small, meaningful activities int yur daily rutine. Instead f stressing big life gals, try engaging in enjyable activities, like taking up a new hbby whether it’s drawing, cking, r smething else. These small, meaningful actins can gradually build a strnger sense f purpse.
In summary, shaping yur persnality may be nt that difficult. By making easy changes in yur daily life and develping a sense f purpse, yu can take meaningful steps tward persnal grwth.

C. ding as many tasks as pssibleD. lking back n childhd successes
30. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. We can develp new traits withut any effrts r intentins.
B. A higher sense f purpse can encurage us t realize dreams.
C. Key factrs in persnal grwth are penness and agreeableness.
D. The thery f PATHS helps us build a strnger sense f purpse.

In 2023, they published a study in the Jurnal f Experimental (实验的) Psychlgy, in which they described their experiment.
The experiment tk place at the Griffin Museum f Science and Industry, in Chicag. Researchers spke with 101 kids wh were visiting the museum. And they gave each kid tw free, museum-branded pencils. The kids culd take bth pencils hme r they culd give ne f the pencils t a stranger.
Befre giving away the pencil, the researchers asked the kids t guess hw “big” their act f kindness wuld be t the peple wh receive the gift. Wuld the persn be happy? Or wuld the gift feel like n big deal?
Many kids had truble guessing, says Yanyi Leng, a research assistant wh helped with the experiment. Leng tld TIME fr Kids that sme f the children said, “I’d like t give my pencil... but I’m nt sure hw they’re ging t feel.”
In fact, peple wh received the pencils were much happier than the givers had predicted. Additinally, the kids felt satisfied after giving the pencils t thers. “It prves (证明) the pwer f these small, randm acts f kindness,” Echelbarger says. “Like, ‘Yu culd have chsen anyne, but yu chse me.’”
Echelbarger and Epley’s study prves that ding gd feels gd. This is true fr the kid n the receiving end f a gd deed as well as fr the kid wh perfrms it.
