My wife and I have gardened tgether fr years, but the great birch tree (桦树) challenge f 2024 put ur teamwrk t the test.
We’d agreed t replace tw birch trees we’d lst and buy trees small enugh fr me t manage. Yet, at the garden center, my wife’s attentin was drawn t a twering 15-ft birch with a rt ball the size f a big exercise ball. When I asked an emplyee abut its weight, he estimated, “Abut 400 punds.” I tried t make sure my wife culd hear s I raised my vice n purpse, “S, yu’d need t be a sprtsman t mve that, right?” She ndded. Game ver, I thught.
“Call Brian,” my wife said, referring t ur strng firefighter sn-in-law. The next mrning, Brian arrived with 800 punds f birch trees in his truck. After much pushing and struggling, we managed t get them ff the truck, but they went n further than the driveway. Brian left fr sme reasn, and the trees remained where they’d landed.
That night, it sprang t my mind that we’d been asking the wrng questin. Instead f “Hw d we mve a 400-pund tree?” we shuld be asking, “Hw can we make the tree lighter?” With that shift in mind, I gt ut f bed and remved the 300-pund pile f earth, dirt and rcks frm each rt ball, making them much easier t handle. Tw mnths later, the tw trees are tall and slid, already casting shadws. T me, they are mre than just trees—they are reminders f the times I limit myself by sticking t the usual methds.
根据文章第二段“Yet, at the garden center, my wife’s attentin was drawn t a twering 15-ft birch with a rt ball the size f a big exercise ball. When I asked an emplyee abut its weight, he estimated, “Abut 400 punds.” I tried t make sure my wife culd hear s I raised my vice n purpse, “S, yu’d need t be a sprtsman t mve that, right?”(然而,在园艺中心,我妻子的注意力被一棵高耸的15英尺桦树吸引住了,它的根球像一个巨大的健身球那么大。
根据文章第二段“Yet, at the garden center, my wife’s attentin was drawn t a twering 15-ft birch with a rt ball the size f a big exercise ball. When I asked an emplyee abut its weight, he estimated, “Abut 400 punds.” I tried t make sure my wife culd hear s I raised my vice n purpse, “S, yu’d need t be a sprtsman t mve that, right?”(然而,在园艺中心,我妻子的注意力被一棵高耸的15英尺桦树吸引住了,它的根球像一个巨大的健身球那么大。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“That night, it sprang t my mind that we’d been asking the wrng questin. Instead f “Hw d we mve a 400-pund tree?” we shuld be asking, “Hw can we make the tree lighter?” With that shift in mind, I gt ut f bed and remved the 300-pund pile f earth, dirt and rcks frm each rt ball, making them much easier t handle.(那天夜里,我突然意识到我们问错了问题。
根据文章最后一段“T me, they are mre than just trees—they are reminders f the times I limit myself by sticking t the usual methds. I am grateful fr having a partner wh pushes me t lk up and change the way I think abut things.(对我来说,它们不仅仅是树——它们提醒我,我常常因为固守常规方法而限制了自己。

A study by Tulane University reveals that frequent illness may accelerate brain aging and increase the risk f dementia (痴呆) r cgnitive decline. The findings highlight the imprtance f maintaining gd health t prevent infectins, especially amng the elderly and dementia-prne individuals.
The study examined aging male mice and fund that repeated, intermittent experiences with mderate inflammatin (发炎), such as that caused by the flu r a seasnal head cld, caused impaired cgnitin and disrupted cmmunicatin between neurns in thse mice.
“We were interested in asking whether differences in infectin experience culd accunt, at least in part, fr the differences in rates f dementia we see in the ppulatin,” said lead authr Elizabeth Engler-Chiurazzi, PhD.“The mice we were studying were healthy adults appraching middle age, and yet, when expsed t intermittent inflammatin, they remembered less and their neurns functined mre prly.”
This study is the first t mdel repeated, intermittent infectins in mice and examine the lng-term cnsequences fr brain functin and health.
Humans ften experience infectins and inflammatin at substantially higher rates than labratry mice. But given that impairments were bserved in mice after nly five intermittent inflammatry treatments, the cgnitive change in humans may be mre severe.
“Our mice nly experienced intermittent sickness-like inflammatin a handful f times, s the fact that we bserved impairments at all was surprising,” Engler-Chiurazzi said. “The effects were subtle, but that’s why I find these results meaningful: in a human, cgnitive impairments frm a similar number f inflammatry experiences might nt be nticeable in their daily lives but culd have accumulative effects that negatively impact the aging brain.”
The findings may have imprtant implicatins fr standard f care arund hw infectins are handled amng the elderly and thse at risk fr dementia. Ging frward, Engler-Chiurazzi said mre wrk needs t be dne t understand why infectins impact the brain and hw t mitigate thse effects. In additin, she hpes fllw-up studies will investigate whether weaker ppulatins face a higher burden f neurlgical effects. “The biggest takeaway frm this research, in ur pinin, is the imprtance f staying as healthy and infectin-free as pssible,” she said.
28.The researchers cnduct the study in rder t_________.
A.highlight the frequent illness is harmless t human beings.
B.identify whether the repeated inflammatin will cause impaired cgnitin.
C.explain the adult male mice are mre likely t have impaired cgnitive functin.
D.shw cgnitive impairments frm a few inflammatry experiences is nt nticeable.
29.What can we learn abut the study?
A.The brains f these mice were unaffected by the disease.
B.The infectins have little effect n impacting the aging brain.
C.Humans will suffer even mre severe cgnitive decline because f the frequent illness.
D.Researchers used t examine the effects f repeated infectins n brain functin and health.
30.What des the underlined wrd “mitigate” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A.relieveB.strengthenC.prmteD.emphasize
31.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.The standard f care has been revealed.

根据第三段““We were interested in asking whether differences in infectin experience culd accunt, at least in part, fr the differences in rates f dementia we see in the ppulatin,” said lead authr Elizabeth Engler-Chiurazzi, PhD. “The mice we were studying were healthy adults appraching middle age, and yet, when expsed t intermittent inflammatin, they remembered less and their neurns functined mre prly.”
根据第五段“Humans ften experience infectins and inflammatin at substantially higher rates than labratry mice. But given that impairments were bserved in mice after nly five intermittent inflammatry treatments, the cgnitive change in humans may be mre severe.
根据第七段中“Ging frward, Engler-Chiurazzi said mre wrk needs t be dne t understand why infectins impact the brain and hw t mitigate thse effects. 故选A项。
根据第一段“A study by Tulane University reveals that frequent illness may accelerate brain aging and increase the risk f dementia (痴呆) r cgnitive decline.

Yu bked the Airbnb. Yu stepped away frm wrk. Maybe yu even left yur laptp behind. But nw it’s Mnday, and yu’re smehw mre exhausted than befre. If yu’ve ever returned frm a “restful” weekend still tired, yu weren’t imagining it. Many high-achievers try t slve burnut with surface-level breaks — nly t find themselves back at square ne, but with unpacked bags and a backlg f emails.
The prblem isn’t yur weekend. It’s what yu’re carrying int it. Burnut isn’t just physical tiredness. It’s emtinal exhaustin, decisin fatigue (疲劳), mental verlad, and a cnstant sense f “I shuld be ding mre”. S if yur day-t-day life feels like an endless t-d list, a weekend ff — while lvely — isn’t ging t change that. Yu’re nt just tired. Yu’re verfunctining. And a 48-hur break can’t und a lifestyle that demands superhuman energy.
S what can help? Name what kind f tired yu are. Nt all fatigue is slved by napping. Start by identifying if yu’re emtinally, scially, r mentally tired. Give yurself permissin t rest imperfectly. Yu need recvery that meets yur actual needs — even if that means staying hme r canceling several plans. Build micr-rest int yur week. Stp saving rest fr PTO (Paid Time Off). Reset with quiet meals, five-minute walks, r letting a task g undne.
Tiny exits frm busy mde add up. The real fix isn’t a better vacatin — it’s a better baseline. Yu deserve a life that desn’t require heric recvery. Start by creating space fr yurself daily, nt just n the extra amunt f time. Rest isn’t a reward — it’s a requirement fr living well.
32.What is the primary functin f the first paragraph?
A.T criticize the mdern wrk culture.B.T present a cmmn experience abut rest.
C.T intrduce several ways t relax n weekends.D.T describe pssible prblems during a jurney.
33.What is suggested as an effective way t deal with fatigue?
A.Canceling all the plans fr a perfect rest.B.Saving up rest time fr lnger paid vacatins.
C.Taking shrt breaks during the wrking time.D.Planning lively weekend meals with friends.
34.What can be inferred frm the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A.Lnger vacatins are better fr recvery.B.The slutin lies in restructuring daily life.

C.What leads t yur physical exhaustin?D.Hw can we plan a perfect restful weekend?
根据第一段“Yu bked the Airbnb. Yu stepped away frm wrk. Maybe yu even left yur laptp behind. But nw it’s Mnday, and yu’re smehw mre exhausted than befre. 33. Yu need recvery that meets yur actual needs — even if that means staying hme r canceling several plans. Build micr-rest int yur week.
根据最后一段“The real fix isn’t a better vacatin — it’s a better baseline. Yu deserve a life that desn’t require heric recvery. Start by creating space fr yurself daily, nt just n the extra amunt f time. Rest isn’t a reward — it’s a requirement fr living well.(真正的解决办法不是一个更好的假期,而是一个更好的基线。
Yu stepped away frm wrk. Maybe yu even left yur laptp behind. But nw it’s Mnday, and yu’re smehw mre exhausted than befre. If yu’ve ever returned frm a “restful” weekend still tired, yu weren’t imagining it. Many high-achievers try t slve burnut with surface-level breaks — nly t find themselves back at square ne, but with unpacked bags and a backlg f emails.(你订了爱彼迎。 许多成功人士试图通过表面上的休息来解决倦怠问题,结果却发现自己又回到了起点,但却带着未打包的行李和积压的电子邮件)”和最后一段中“ The real fix isn’t a better vacatin — it’s a better baseline.Yu deserve a life that desn’t require heric recvery. Start by creating space fr yurself daily, nt just n the extra amunt f time. Rest isn’t a reward — it’s a requirement fr living well.(真正的解决办法不是一个更好的假期,而是一个更好的基线。

36.根据上文“Every child learns differently, especially when it cmes t a difficult tpic like math.(每个孩子的学习方式都不一样,尤其是在数学这样的难题上)”以及后文“There are plenty f resurces available that can help bth f yu t mve frward in cnfidence. Here are sme f ur recmmended resurces that can help build math skills — n matter what stage f learning yur student is in(有很多可用的资源可以帮助你们双方自信地向前迈进。
37.根据后文“When the infrmatin is presented in a game-based frmat, yur learner may feel mre “safe” t explre math skills and learn in their wn way. This type f resurce can be a great way t “break thrugh” any fears r reservatins
38.根据后文“Fr example, let them cunt cins and pay n yur next grcery run. Or, have them create patterns with their favrite small tys and blcks.(例如,让他们数硬币并在你下次去杂货店的时候付钱。
39.根据上文“Sme children may learn better by interactive experiences.(有些孩子可能通过互动体验学得更好)”以及后文“Fr example, let them cunt cins and pay n yur next grcery run. Or, have them create patterns with their favrite small tys and blcks.(例如,让他们数硬币并在你下次去杂货店的时候付钱。
40.根据上文“Yur child’s teacher is an invaluable resurce fr yu t lean n as yu wrk t make yur child’s educatinal jurney a successful ne. They see yur child thrughut the schl day, and can give yu insight as t hw yur child is ding and hw yur child learn best.(你孩子的老师是一个宝贵的资源,你可以依靠你的工作,使你的孩子的教育之旅取得成功。
