Shared mbility: Making travel easier fr all
In many big cities in Eurpe and the US, it might seem like we’ve achieved cheap and easy mbility fr everyne — just use yur phne t find shared e-bikes and electric cars. But if yu’re elderly, living in a lw-incme area r imagine withut a smartphne r credit card, using these shared services becmes much mre difficult. Here is a survey reprting barriers t using bike sharing.
Shared mbility culd be a key part f a mre sustainable transprtatin system. But t be mst effective, it needs t include everyne. Fr-prfit shared mbility prviders have largely failed t deliver n this, but varius initiatives and prjects are finding creative slutins t reach underserved cmmunities.
By cmbining ecnmic supprt, grassrts innvatin, and empathetic design, these effrts aim t make mbility available t everyne, reduce reliance n private vehicles, and ensure fair access fr all. “Yu tend t plan fr what yu knw. That’s why it’s s imprtant t bring in different views in the develpment f mbility.” says Lina Msshammer, funder and CEO f the Austrian mbility cnsulting cmpany Pint&.
      1. What percentage f lwer incme peple express cncern n safety in the survey?
      A. 24%.B. 27%.C. 42%.D. 88%.
      2. Which slutin invlves the idea f recycling used bikes?
      A. Public-Sectr Interventin.B. Cmmunity-Centric Design.
      C. Technlgy Adaptatin.D. Nn-Prfit Innvatin.
      3. What des Msshammer stress t address the challenge?

Alex is my regular hiking, ice-climbing, and muntain-biking partner. We were n a ne-night trip, and what he brught fr dinner was just rice. Literally nthing else.
This was nt because he was trying t pack as light as pssible, nr was it because he was brke. I tried t cnvince him t at least add sme sy sauce (酱油) t it. But n, Alex wasn’t having any f it. “I dn’t need it,” he said simply.
Nw, if he was talking nly abut utdrs’ meals, I almst understd the reasn. When yu’re ravenus after a day f burning ff calries walking r climbing r backcuntry skiing in the muntains, hw awesme d things taste! Just as the saying ges, hunger is the best sauce. And I agree. Abslutely.
But there’s mre t it than that. Last mnth, I went dwn the cast car camping with my family. One mrning, my wife made a statement. “I dn’t see the pint,” she said. “It’s s much wrk, camping. But the views at hme are better. The beds are mre cmfrtable. It’s mre peaceful. And at hme, the fd is better.” I’ll admit she’s right abut the first three. But the fd? We had a simple pasta ne night, snags anther, chicken curry the third, but they all tasted gd. Better than at hme. And it wasn’t simply that we were hungry; it was because we were camping.
The real pint I want t cnvey is that meals taste particularly gd when I’m camping because it reminds me f things that are easily verlked at hme, where I can just g t the cupbard r the supermarket and grab whatever I feel like. When yu’re camping, life is reduced t its essentials, and I’m reminded f hw privileged mst f us are t be dry, warm and fed. Mre imprtantly, I’m reminded that, sadly, nt everyne is as frtunate as we are. And I’m reminded that, as a sciety, we shuld d better fr them.
      4. Why did Alex bring nly rice fr dinner n the trip?
      A. He didn’t like sy sauce.B. He preferred t travel light.
      C. He culdn’t affrd a better meal.D. He thught simple fd enugh utdrs.
      5. What des the underlined wrd “ravenus” in the third paragraph mean?
      A. Exhausted.B. Starving.C. Charming.D. Refreshed.
      6. What makes the authr sad in the last paragraph?
      A. Sme peple lack the basic necessities f life.
      B. Sme peple fail t appreciate what they have.
      C. Peple easily frget the beauty f simple things.
      D. Peple easily quit camping due t its discmfrt.
      7. What message des the authr want t cnvey in the passage?
      A. Camping is a test f adaptability t challenges.
      B. Camping is a bnding experience fr family.
      C. Camping is a reminder f ur gd life.
      D. Camping is a chance t enjy a feast.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) aren’t just lcalized warm areas in the sea. They are sustained, intense sudden rises in sea temperature that can last fr mnths. And their impact is extremely severe — killing cral, driving fish away, and disrupting entire fisheries. Fueled by human-driven climate change, these events are becming mre frequent and severe.
A new study reveals that the MHWs f 2023 brke every knwn recrd. Accrding t the study, 96% f the glbal cean surface experienced heatwave cnditins. Regins like the Nrth Atlantic, Nrth Pacific, trpical Pacific, and Suthwest Pacific std the wrst f it. Tgether, they made up 90% f the abnrmal cean heating. The Nrth Atlantic heatwave stretched n fr 525 days, beginning in mid-2022 and refusing t let up. Meanwhile, the Suthwest Pacific experienced a marine heatwave s vast and sustained that it brke previus recrds.
A team led by Tianyun Dng analyzed satellite data t cnduct a glbal analysis. They used a technique t track hw heat mved thrugh the cean’s tp layers. The researchers fund several causes fr the 2023 marine heatwaves. In sme areas, there was less clud cver, allwing mre sunlight t hit the water. Elsewhere, weaker winds led t less mixing, causing warm water t stand still. Ocean currents als shifted frm their usual patterns, further cntributing t the buildup f heat.
“The 2023 MHWs may mark a fundamental shift in cean-atmsphere dynamics, ptentially serving as an early warning f an appraching tipping pint in Earth’s climate system,” wrte the study authrs. A climate tipping pint means crssing a threshld(阈值) where the system can’t recver n its wn. Fr the cean, that culd lead t mre frequent heatwaves, cllapsing fd webs, and decreasing fish ppulatins.
And the impact wn’t be restricted t the sea. Warmer ceans hld less xygen, disrupt the exchange f heat and misture with the atmsphere, and help drive extreme weather — affecting everything frm strms and rainfall t drughts n land.
      8. Hw des the authr present the issue in the first paragraph?
      A. By defining a cncept.B. By quting an expert.
      C. By giving examples.D. By prviding statistics.
      9. What des the authr try t illustrate with the figures in paragraph 2?
      A. The imprtance f wrld ceans.
      B. The reactin t the MHWs f 2023.
      C. The severity f the MHWs f 2023.
      D. The difficulty in addressing climate change.
      10. What can be learned frm the research led by Tianyun Dng?
      A. Ocean currents have becme strnger.
      B. Multiple factrs caused the marine heatwaves.
      C. Ocean warming has caused mre clud cver.
      D. Fishing activities determine marine heatwaves.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Rising sea levels: Are castal cities at risk f disappearing?
      B. Cral bleaching: Can marine ecsystems recver in time?
      C. Extreme weather patterns: Is glbal warming accelerating?
      D. Overheating ceans: Have we reached a climate tipping pint?
      D
Frailty (虚弱) is a medically defined cnditin in lder adults that increases vulnerability t everyday stresses, leading t a higher risk f falls, hspitalizatin and lss f independence. Warning signs f frailty include unintentinal weight lss, mving slwly, feeling weak, persistent tiredness and lw levels f physical activity. Because mst f these signs have a direct link t hw active smene is, walking is a particularly effective way t help lder adults imprve their verall health and quality f life and maintain independence fr lnger.
But a cmmn questin remains: Hw fast shuld lder adults walk t see real benefits? Traditinally, the “talk test” has been used t guide walking intensity: Peple are encuraged t walk at a pace that makes it difficult t sing but still allws fr cmfrtable cnversatin. Hwever, this methd depends t much n persnal judgment and is difficult t apply cnsistently.
A new study led by researchers at the University f Chicag Medicine (UChicag Medicine) fund that walking slightly faster — 14 steps per minute mre than a persn’s usual pace — led t meaningful imprvements in physical functin amng lder adults wh were frail r at risk f becming frail.
Walking cadence — the number f steps taken per minute — is a practical way t measure walking intensity. Daniel Rubin, MD, an anesthesilgist at UChicag Medicine, and his clleagues studied lder adults classified as frail r prefrail. The study’s results shwed clear benefits: Thse wh increased their cadence by at least 14 steps per minute abve their usual pace (t rughly 100 steps per minute) experienced substantial imprvements in their functinal capacity, demnstrated by their ability t walk lnger distances in a standardized test.
T use cadence t guide yur walking intensity, start by measuring yur usual walking pace in steps per minute t establish a baseline, accrding t the researchers. Frm there, try increasing yur pace slightly t find a level that still feels cmfrtable but faster.
      12. What is the majr impact f frailty n lder adults?
      A. It makes them less active.B. It limits their ability t think.
      C. It reduces their scial activities.D. It prevents them frm walking.
      13. Why is the talk test cnsidered less ideal fr guiding walking pace?
      A. It is ineffective.B. It is subjective.C. It is unscientific.D. It is time-cnsuming.
      14. What can we cnclude frm the findings f the study?
      A. Eat less, weigh lighter.B. Learn mre, live lnger.
      C. Sleep better, feel happier.D. Walk faster, age slwer.
      15. What is the purpse f measuring baseline walking cadence?
      A. T cmpare it with yunger peple’s pace.
      B. T determine the best time fr daily walks.
      C. T help set a prper increased walking speed.
      D. T calculate hw far ne shuld walk each day.

When I landed in a small twn in New Zealand as an exchange student, I thught I was ready fr everything — new faces, language barriers, strange scial patterns and even hmesickness. Still, the smallest things made me feel ut f place.
Luckily, the Wilsns, my hst family, did everything they culd t help me settle in — driving me arund, sharing meals, and even letting me use their kitchen when. I. missed Chinese fd. With their warmth and supprt, everything seemed t fall int place.
But at schl, small mments felt bigger than I’d imagined. In ur first literature class, we discussed a Hemingway stry. Everyne jumped in actively, while I struggled t speak up. My desk-mate encuraged me, “Next time, just speak up.” I ndded, frcing a bitter smile.
And just like that, I fund myself in anther cultural trap, Mrs. Wilsn’s birthday dinner. At the table, I answered plitely but kept mstly t myself. Mrs. Wilsn nticed my silence and gently asked, “Yu alright, sweet girl? Yu’ re s quiet tnight.” My face reddened. Was my silence seen as cld, rather than plite?
That night, restless and wide awake, I wndered if I needed t laugh luder, speak faster; r hide parts f myself just t feel I belnged. Questins flded my mind, nne with answers.
A few days later, ur teacher annunced there wuld be a Culture Festival next week. “Yu’ ll prepare a stand t share yur wn culture — fd, crafts, custms ... anything meaningful. Yu can nt nly display yur culture but als make it interactive, allwing peple t try new things, learn traditinal skills. r share stries and cultural symbls,” she said. The class lit up with excitement. I sat frzen, mind racing: hw culd I share my traditins in English? The thught made my stmach twisted (扭曲). Yet, I gathered myself with a deep breath and signed up. After that, I threw myself whleheartedly int preparatins, until the day finally came.
