(必修二 U5 Humans and Nature & 必修三 U8 Green Living)
Scientists have created a new kind f paint that’s super light and tugh. The clrs in the new paint aren’t like thse in mst paint. Instead, they’re mre like the clrs n a butterfly’s wings.
Fr hundreds f years, humans have been mixing different minerals, metals, r chemicals tgether t prduce different clrs f paint. But nature has anther way t create clr, called “structural clr”. Structural clr cmes frm tiny shapes n the surfaces f things like wings, feathers, r shells. Nrmally, we never see the shapes that create these clrs because they’re s tiny.
Researchers were trying t create a special mirrred surface. But they fund super-tiny clumps f aluminum (铝) atms n the surface. The researchers were upset because these tiny masses messed up the mirrr. Then they realized that these tiny masses made clrs when light hit them. They decided t turn their discvery int paint.
All the clrs in the new paint cme frm aluminum. There are tiny aluminum flakes and even tinier nanparticles (纳米粒) that create the clrs. The nanparticles dn’t really prduce the clr. They simply reflect back a single clr. The size f the nanparticles determines which clr gets reflected.
Because the new paint desn’t have pigments (颜料), it is extremely light. The paint is s light that it culd reduce the fuel used by planes and cars. Nrmally, it takes abut 500 kilgrams f paint t cver a Being 747 airplane. It wuld nly take 1.3 kilgrams f structural paint t d the same jb.
In regular paint, pigments break dwn and fade ver time. That’s nt true fr structural clr. “Once we paint smething with structural clr, it shuld stay fr centuries,“ says Dr. Chanda. What’s mre, the new paint, even darker shades, desn’t heat up like regular paint and keeps surfaces up t 16.6°C cler than nrmal paint. Using it n buildings culd help cl cities and reduce the electricity spent n air cnditining.
      12. What makes structural clr different frm the clr f mst paint?
      A. It uses metals and minerals t prduce varius shades.
      B. It is created thrugh tiny structures that reflect specific light.
      C. It is inspired by clrs fund in butterfly wings and bird feathers.
      D. It results frm mixing different chemicals under certain cnditins.
      13. What led scientists t discver the new paint?
      A. The demand fr lighter paint in the aviatin industry.
      B. A lng-term study n hw butterflies prduce clrs.
      C. Their purpseful research n creating a clred mirrr.
      D. An unexpected finding when making a mirrred surface.
      14. What des the authr want t emphasize in the last tw paragraphs?
      A. The new paint’s lw cst.
      B. The new paint’s multiple advantages.
      C. The histry f regular paint.
      D. The difficulty f making the new paint.
      15. Which is the best title fr the passage?
      A. Nature’s Recipe fr a Revlutinary Paint
      B. Butterfly Wings: Nature’s Clrful Inspiratin
      C. The Evlutin f Pigments in Art and Industry
      D. Hw Aluminum Is Changing the Future f Flight
