It was 2 a. m. when he pulled ut his harmnica and played the instrument frm his childhd. First, Barnes recalls, the frgs jined in. Then the alligatrs apprached. Several gatrs stayed at the bat’s edge as he serenaded (唱小夜曲) them fr the next tw hurs.
Barnes, nw 61, is knwn tday as a musician. He is als a naturalist wh spent mst f his career wrking fr the Natinal Park Service. But fr Barnes, music and nature are inseparable; they are cnnected. Luisiana’s rhythms, he says, are as place-specific as its marshes and frests. The wetlands even prduce their wn music. Barnes visited Barataria at night with a sund engineer, capturing wildlife sunds t weave int his recrdings. He came t bth passins early. As a child, Barnes smetimes went utside at 1 a. m. t watch flying squirrels glide.
His early interest in the natural wrld led Barnes t majr in bilgy at Hendersn State University and t start wrking at natinal parks as an undergraduate. He arrived at Barataria in 1987, when he was 23. Barnes surveyed the park’s plants and animals and led daytime cane trips. Hurs after sunset, he returned t the water by himself.
Barnes retired frm the Natinal Park Service in 2015. He still plays music full time, and he remains a naturalist, leading walking turs and phtgraphing medicinal plants and fungi. The exhibitin, “Btanica: Gardens, Landscapes, and Plant Medicines in Suth Luisiana”, which he als helped arrange, runs thrugh May 2026.
Plants, fungi and music, t Barnes, all have magic pwer and they are never far frm each ther. “When yu rll int New Orleans, yu can hear sme f the wrld’s greatest music,” he says. “And yu can get int yur car and drive 25 minutes and be in the wetlands, cmpletely surrunded by nature and water, and feel like yu’re 1,000 miles frm civilizatin.”

Astrnauts embarking n lng jurneys in deep space can’t pack all the calries they will need in the frm f freeze-dried fd. They als can’t grw everything they’ll need, as nbard garden technlgy isn’t mature enugh t turn ut fresh prduce. Given thse nutritinal restrictins, a grup f engineers thinks future space travelers shuld change their diets.
In a study published in The Internatinal Jurnal f Astrbilgy, scientists suggest that astrnauts culd lk t asterids (小行星) fr all-yu-can-eat meals.
They wuldn’t be chewing the rcks themselves. Instead, a chemical and physical prcess wuld break dwn an asterid’s material, and the resulting rganic cmpnents wuld then be fed t bacteria. After the bacteria were full, the astrnauts culd cnsume the cllectin f micrbes (微生物) — mre appetizingly referred t as “bimass” (生物质).
This idea has rigins in a mre earthly prject, spnsred by Defense Advanced Research Prjects Agency f the US Department f Defense. One f the agency’s prgrams, ReSurce, tasks researchers with taking plastic waste prduced by trps and turning it int smething useful. Jshua Pearce, an engineering prfessr wh is cllabrating n the prject, thught they culd turn thse plastic fd cntainers int mre fd. Dr. Pearce was discussing this plastic wrk with his “space friends”, wh pinted ut that asterids aren’t s different frm plastic, at least frm the micrbes’ perspective: they bth cntain a lt f carbn.
The prblem is whether micrbes will, in fact, eat asterids. That’s smething Annemiek Waajen f VU Amsterdam has investigated, feeding bacteria meterite (陨石) material pieces f space rck that have fallen t Earth. They cnsumed its carbn and grew, accrding t her research. Dr. Waajen thinks asterid fd makes sense bichemically, but that it will remain a curius idea fr a while. “It is smething that’s still a lng way away,” she said.
The space part gives Stephen Techtmann, a Michigan Technlgical University micrbilgist, pause. “Hw d thse assumptins actually translate when yu get it int that envirnment?” he said. One prblem is that asterids are nt chemical clnes f each ther. “Changing frm asterid t asterid might be challenging,” he als said.
Dr. Pearce is willing t try t srt that ut, hping t gather data demnstrating that the bimass meals are likely t be prduced and safe t cnsume. “I already prmised I wuld be the first ne t take a bite,” he said.
Despite the challenges f prviding astrnauts with a balanced and delicius diet, we believe that the end f scientific explratin is finally a slutin.
8. What truble d astrnauts in deep space have accrding t the passage?
A. They pssibly starve fr lack f fd.B. They are addicted t freeze-dried fd.
C. They are dependent n fresh prduce.D. They likely face nutritinal imbalance.
9. What is the assumed alternative diet fr astrnauts?
A. Asterids.B. Bimass.C. Bacteria.D. Meterites.
10. Which f the fllwing des Stephen Techtmann agree with?
A. It remains t be explred whether the prject can be realized.
B. It is cmpletely impracticable fr micrbes t eat asterids.
C. There is dubt arising abut the safety f the micrbe meal.
D. There is n need t cntinue with this asterid prject.
11. What’s the authr’s attitude t the idea f lking t asterids fr meals?
A. IntlerantB. DubtfulC. FavrableD. Dismissive
D

It’s n secret that peple feel like they are getting busier.
Yet, are we really crazy busy? Wrk undertaken at the University Cllege Lndn’s Centre fr Time Use Research bldly claims that we are less, nt mre, busy ver the past half century. Hw can that be?
Cnsider this: Mdern inventins like the dishwasher, the washer and dryer, the micrwave and any number f ther labr-saving devices, have fundamentally diminished the time needed fr husehld chres. And “wrk hurs per week declined fr a century,” writes Kyle Kwalski, a best-selling authr, wh investigates in his bk the reasn we feel busy in such a cnvenient sciety.
It isn’t just the reality f hw we spend ur time that has shifted, either. Culturally, hw we define “busy” has als changed cnsiderably.
Histrically, wrking lng hurs didn’t generate admiratin. In ancient Rme, tium, the Latin wrd signifying freedm frm wrk and leisure time, was a dear activity t the wealthy wh culd happily affrd nt t wrk fr a living.
What a difference a few decades makes! Eln Musk, the wealthiest persn n the planet, prtrays himself as a wrkahlic, wrking 80 t 100 hurs per week. Celebrities brag abut their busyness and crazy wrk schedules n scial media. Recent data frm the U. S Census Bureau als suggests that the highest earners wrk the lngest hurs.
Part f this mnumental shift is dwn t the gradual rise f knwledge-intensive ecnmies. Labr markets are increasingly highly structured and cmpetitive, where human capital is ne f the mst prized ecnmic assets. On the supply side, wrkers invest heavily in their educatin and skill develpment, recgnizing that their human capital is their mst marketable resurce. On the demand side, cmpanies, institutins, and headhunters cmpete t attract tp talent and the best brains. All f this has helped usher in an envirnment where lng wrk hurs have becme a status symbl; a way fr individuals t demnstrate their wrth.
As Generative Artificial Intelligence enhances ur prductivity and efficiency at wrk, will we use the extra time t enjy ur lives, r will we simply push mre tasks int an already verladed schedule, seeking a sense f imprtance?
12. Which f the fllwing culd be Kyle Kwalski’s wrk?
A. Why D We Feel S Busy When Research Says We’re Nt?
B. What D Mdern Inventins Bring T Us Nwadays?
C. Hw Des Mdern Technlgy Weaken Our Busyness?
D. When Will Husehld Chres Be Ttally Dne By AI?
13. Why is Eln Musk mentined in paragraph 6?
A. T intrduce a tpic.B. T supprt an idea.
C. T make a predictin.D. T clarify a definitin.
14. Which f the fllwing best explains “mnumental” underlined in paragraph 7?
A. Majr.B. Psitive.C. Abrupt.D. Slight.
15. Why des the authr raise the questins in the last paragraph?
A. T urge readers t seek self-imprtance.
B. T advcate leading a busy and admirable life.
C. T inspire readers t reflect n the busy lifestyle.
D. T suggest fighting against the verladed schedule.
