She was running mre and mre and eating less and less, but srt f staying in the same place. She just had the impressin that she shuld always be lsing weight.
Then she learned that what had happened thrugh all f this weight-lss pursuit was that she had dieted and exercised away all f her lean bdy mass (去脂体重). She thught her muscles were just there waiting t be uncvered if she lst enugh weight. It turned ut that, actually, if yu aren’t prtecting yur muscles actively, they can g away.
While running, Jhnstn fund it punishing, but it was a way t achieve ne gal that cnsumed her: nt being fat. She had absrbed the cultural message that the purpse f exercise was t make her as small as pssible.
Jhnstn admits that she was first drawn t weightlifting fr the same reasn. But gradually, she discvered strength training culd ffer mre.
She says lifting weights helped repair her disrdered eating and allwed her t enjy fd. “When I gave it a chance, with these basic elements, I fund it transfrmative. That wrk f lking clser and listening t myself is wrth the time,” she shares. “Mst imprtantly, it changed my attitude abut my wn bdy, frm ne centered n denial f pleasure t a relatinship that nw embraces mvement, rest and eating equally. My bdy culd feel gd, even pwerful.”

Intellectually humble peple are able t recgnize and admit t the limitatins f their knwledge. They tend t be mre pen-minded, discerning, and respectful f thers. This suggests that intellectual humility (谦卑) culd be a virtue wrth develping, especially in children. In fact, a new study discvered that they already d, frm quite a yung age.
In this study, a diverse grup f ver 100 fur-t-eleven-year-ld children were asked hw they felt abut a humble versus an ver-cnfident adult figure. The children were presented with an ambiguus (模棱两可的) bject r wrd. Then, the children heard tw adults answer questins regarding the bject r wrd, including what it was, hw sure they were abut their identificatin, and if they were pen t it pssibly being smething else. Each adult initially identified the bject r wrd in the same way. But the humble persn said they were “pretty sure” they were right but that the wrd r bject culd be smething else, while the ver-cnfident persn said they were “definitely sure” they were right and it culdn’t be therwise.
After viewing these interviews, the children rated whm they liked mre and wuld rather learn frm. By analyzing their respnses, the researchers fund that children aged five and a half years and lder preferred humble peple t ver-cnfident peple.
“This suggests that children as yung as five and a half recgnize the value f intellectual humility,” says researcher Shauna Bwes f Vanderbilt University.
Bwes’s finding suggests that children culd benefit frm adults mdeling intellectual humility at yunger ages. Fr example, elementary schl teachers culd express uncertainty in situatins where the answer isn’t clear, nudging kids tward staying pen and digging deeper int ambiguus tpics. Similarly, parents culd mdel humility with their yung children, encuraging them t tackle cmplex prblems.
Bwes hpes that when adults mdel intellectual humility, children learn that n ne has all f the answers. “There is pwer in saying ‘I’m nt entirely sure and my knwledge is fallible, and s is yurs. But we can cme tgether and talk’,” says Bwes. “I think the earlier kids learn t d this, the better.”
      8. What is a difference between the tw adult figures?
      A. The kids viewing their interviews.B. The bject r wrd they identified.
      C. Their initial way t identify an bject.D. Their attitude t their identificatin.
      9. What might be cncluded accrding t the new study?
      A. Over-cnfidence gives rise t misunderstandings.
      B. Yung children prefer peple acting with humility.
      C. Humble peple are bund t learn mre frm thers.
      D. Children are fairly insensitive t intellectual humility.
      10. What des the wrd “nudging” underlined in paragraph 5 mst prbably mean?
      A. Cntrlling.B. Fllwing.C. Mtivating.D. Judging.
      11. What message des Bwes deliver in the last paragraph?
      A. Discussin desn’t always lead t certainty.
      B. Hiding ne’s ignrance helps maintain authrity.
      C. Knwledgeable peple are eager t share resurces.
      D. It’s necessary t admit t ne’s knwledge limitatins.
      【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. D
      D
In recent years, the sharp increase in glbal rcket launches has transfrmed the sky, fueled by the rapid grwth f the space industry. This creates majr pprtunities but als raises envirnmental challenges. Pllutants released during rcket launches and re-entry are left in the middle atmsphere, where they can damage the zne layer (臭氧层) which prtects Earth against harmful ultravilet radiatin.
Investigatins int hw rcket emissins (排放) affect zne began mre than three decades ag, but fr many years the impact was cnsidered minimal. As the frequency f launches cntinues t rise, this view is shifting. In 2019, nly 97 rbital launches were recrded wrldwide, but by 2024, the figure had climbed t 258, with prjectins pinting t cntinued rapid grwth.
Unlike grund-level pllutants, emissins frm rckets and re-entering satellites can stay in the middle and upper atmsphere up t 100 times lnger, since remval prcesses such as precipitatin d nt ccur at thse heights. While mst launches take place in the Nrthern Hemisphere, the atmspheric flw eventually distributes the pllutants glbally.
Recently, researchers frm ETH Zurich and the Physical Meterlgical Observatry in Davs, in cperatin with Laura Revell’s internatinal team at the University f Canterbury, used a chemistry-climate mdel t see hw future emissins might impact the zne layer by 2030.
With 2,040 annual launches by 2030 — rughly eight times the 2024 ttal — the mdel predicts that glbal average zne thickness wuld decrease by nearly 0.3%. Seasnal lsses culd reach as much as 4% ver Antarctica, where the zne hle cntinues t reappear each spring.
While these reductins may appear small, the cntext is critical. The zne layer is still recvering frm the earlier lss caused by lng-lived chlrflurcarbns (CFCs), which were banned under the 1989 Mntreal Prtcl. Even tday, glbal zne thickness remains abut 2% belw pre-industrial levels, and the full recvery is nt expected until arund 2066.
But we believe a launch industry that avids zne-damaging effects is entirely pssible: Mnitring rcket emissins and carrying ut necessary and apprpriate regulatins are all key t ensuring that the zne layer cntinues its recvery. This requires scientists, plicymakers, and industry t wrk tgether.
      12. What is the current view n rcket emissins?
      A. Their impact will becme severe.B. Their distributin is lcatin-limited.
      C. They will decrease at a faster speed.D. They can be remved by precipitatin.
      13. Why was the recent research n rcket emissins cnducted?
      A. T seek ptential slutins.B. T lk int their future effect.
      C. T address climate change challenges.D. T figure ut the leading cntributrs.
      14. What is the functin f paragraph 6?
      A. T shw prtecting the zne layer is pssible.
      B. T indicate the dark future f the space industry.
      C. T argue that the mdel predictins are wrrying.
      D. T set standards fr glbal average zne thickness.
      15. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Glbal Rcket Launches Are Rcketing
      B. Can the Ozne Layer Still Prtect Earth?
      C. Rckets Culd Eat Away at the Ozne Layer
      D. Can Ozne-damaging Effects Be Avided?
      【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. C
