What des it mean t live a gd life? This questin has been debated fr centuries. In the field f psychlgy, tw main cncepts f the gd life have been quite ppular: A happy life full f pleasure and psitive emtins, and a meaningful life full f purpse and sacrifice. But what if these aren’t the nly ptins?
In recent years, a lng-neglected versin f the gd life has been receiving greater attentin: the psychlgically rich life. It is full f cmplex mental engagement, a wide range f intense and deep emtins, and diverse, nvel, surprising and interesting experiences. Smetimes they are neither pleasant nr meaningful. Hwever, they are rarely bring r mntnus (单调的).
After all, bth happy and meaningful lives can becme mntnus and repetitive. A persn with a steady ffice jb, married with children, may be satisfied and find his r her life meaningful and still be bred. Als, the psychlgically rich life desn’t necessarily invlve ecnmic richness. Fr instance, cnsider Hesse’s character Gldmund, wh has n mney but pursues the life f a free spirit.
Research has fund psychlgical richness is related t, but partially distinct frm, bth happy and meaningful lives. Psychlgical richness is related with penness t experience and experiencing bth psitive and negative emtins mre intensely. But is the psychlgically rich life ne that peple actually want?
In a new study, Oishi and his clleagues asked peple in nine cuntries the degree t which they value a psychlgically rich life, a happy life and a meaningful life. They fund many peple’s self-described ideal lives invlve psychlgical richness. When frced t chse a life, hwever, the majrity chse a happy life and a meaningful life. Even s, a minrity f peple still favred the psychlgically rich life, ranging frm 6.7% in Singapre t 16.8% in Germany.
These numbers went up when the desire fr a psychlgically rich life was measured indirectly. T understand what a persn wishes their lives might have been, it is imprtant t explre what peple wish they had avided in their lives. When asked what they regret mst and whether unding this event wuld have made their lives happier, mre meaningful r psychlgically richer, abut 28% f Americans said unding the regrettable event wuld have made their lives psychlgically richer.
These findings suggest that while mst peple strive t be happy and have meaning in their lives, a sizable number f peple are cntent merely living a psychlgically rich existence.
As Oishi and his clleagues cnclude, “We believe that taking the psychlgically rich life seriusly will deepen and enrich ur understanding f well-being.” At the end f the day, there is n ne singularly acceptable path t the gd life. Yu have t find a path that wrks best fr yu.
      28. Accrding t the passage, the psychlgically rich life ______.
      A. means living a luxurius life
      B. cmbines pleasure with purpse
      C. invlves varius intense emtins
      D. emphasizes penness and repetitin
      29. We can learn frm the passage that ______.
      A. purpse utweighs pleasure in terms f significance
      B. the chice f a gd life differs frm persn t persn
      C. a psitive mindset helps us understand ur well-being
      D. we shuld never be cntent and always strive fr the best
      30. What is the main purpse f the article?
      A. T cmpare different cncepts f a gd life.
      B. T explain hw t live a psychlgically rich life.
      C. T persuade peple t attain psychlgical richness.
      D. T draw attentin t a less familiar versin f a gd life.
      D
Psychlgists tell us ur self-image defines what we believe we can and cannt d. Each f us ver the years has built up belief abut urselves: Uncnsciusly, ur pictures f wh we are have been frmed by past experiences. Our successes and failures, what thers have tld us and what we think peple believe abut us all help frm impressins f what we think we are. Because self-image is s imprtant in ur grwth, it is imprtant t examine ur cncepts f self in rder t reach ur full ptential.
Changing ur self-image is pssible: Sme psychlgists suggest we begin t change ur self-image by mentally picturing urselves perfrming well at sme task. Since we presently react t things based n ur present images, it’s suggested that we replace thse with better nes. In many experiments, peple were asked t sit quietly fr a few minutes each day and imagine themselves ding well. Fr instance, subjects wuld sit and imagine themselves thrwing darts at a bull’s-eye n a target. Over a perid f weeks, their dart game imprved.
The pint f changing self-image is nt t develp an image f urselves that is nt real. T try t becme smething we really aren’t is just as wrng as living the unrealistic, inferir image we may have. The aim is t find the real self, t bring ur mental images f urselves in line with ur true ptential. Hwever, it is generally accepted amng psychlgists that mst f us fail t d justice t urselves. We’re usually better than we think we are.
Anther imprtant part f changing self-image is t nt think abut past mistakes. Dn’t let failures d harm. Our errrs r humiliatin ver mistakes are necessary steps in learning. It is all right t make mistakes. But when they have taught us what we did wrng, we shuld frget them and nt think abut them repeatedly. Smetimes we keep remembering ur failures r mistakes and feel guilty r embarrassed abut them. We let them take ver, and then we develp a fear.
It is imprtant t have realistic expectatins f urselves. Sme f ur dissatisfactin might cme frm expecting t much f urselves. If we demand cnstant perfectin in everything we d, we can be disappinted and ur pr self-image will cntinue. If ur gal is t reach perfectin, we are destined t fail frm the start.
      31. What is the purpse f Paragraph 3?
      A. T cnfirm the effect f changing self-image.
      B. T clarify the principle f changing self-image.
      C. T prpse a new view n changing self-image.
      D. T stress the imprtance f changing self-image.
      32. Accrding t the authr, hw shuld we regard ur past mistakes?
      A. They are part f ur grwth.
      B. They are warnings fr future.
      C. They are tls fr vercming fear.
      D. They are barriers t ur develpment.
      33. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title f the passage?
      A. We Are What We D
      B. Be the Best We Can Be
      C. We Are What We Think We Are
      D. What We Are Decides What We Think
      34. Which situatin agrees with the idea f the passage?
      A. T utshine his clleagues, Je sets an idealistic gal.
      B. T get alng with her classmates, Dris always humbles herself.
      C. T becme a star player, Alex repeatedly plays back his faults in his mind.

My First Semester Away: Navigating Discmfrt in a New Wrld
Stepping ff the plane with a suitcase stuffed with winter clthes and a head full f expectatins, I thught studying in the U.S. wuld be a smth jurney f self-discvery. Three weeks later, I sat in my drm rm, staring at an unpened bank frm, and realized adaptatin was harder than any textbk chapter I’d ever tackled.
The first challenge came frm daily life. Opening a bank accunt turned int a tw-hur rdeal (磨难) — YuTube tutrials culdn’t translate terms like “verdraft fee,” and the teller’s rapid accent left me ndding blankly. Even meals felt alien: the cafeteria’s cld salads and iced water clashed (冲突) with my habit f warm, cked vegetables, s I jined ther Asian students in biling lettuce in a shared pt, a small rebellin against the unfamiliar. Academic adaptatin brught anther set f challenges: prfessrs expected us t interrupt with questins, and “critical thinking” meant arguing against theries instead f memrizing them — a skill I’d never practiced. I left my first essay feedback sessin in cnfusin, staring at cmments like “lack f analysis.”
Lneliness crept in fastest. My rmmates were als internatinal students, but language barriers and cultural gaps limited hw much we culd help each ther. I’d scrll thrugh phts f ld friends gathering fr dinner and feel a sharp pang f hmesickness.
Change began when I stpped waiting fr cmfrt t find me. I jined a phtgraphy club, and thrugh shared shts f campus sunsets, I bnded with a girl wh’d nce struggled with the same banking frms. In class, I started raising my hand with simple questins, and sn fund prfessrs appreciated the effrt mre than perfect English.
Nw, six mnths later, I still burn my cffee smetimes. But the bank frm is filled ut, I’ve learned t ask fr “ht water, please,” and my last essay gt a “gd analysis” nte. Adaptatin isn’t abut erasing the ld t fit the new — it’s abut stitching (缝合) the familiar int the freign, ne small win at a time.
      40. What were the tw aspects f the challenges the authr faced?
      ____________________________________________
      41. What made it difficult fr the authr t get alng with the rmmates?
