Exams are brain-burning. The silence f the hall; the beating f the clck; the watchful eye f the teacher; the prud expressin f the persn wh has finished 15 minutes early. S it is nt surprising that thse wh feel anxius in the exam d wrse than thse wh d nt. But different frm the existing(现存的) pint f view, the recent study by Maria Thebald shws that the pressure f revisin affects(影响) yur exam perfrmance.
T test this idea, Dr Thebald wrked with 309 German students wh were preparing fr their final exam. During the 100 days befre the real exam, these students used an nline learning app which shwed them ld exam questins and recrded their perfrmance. And 40 days befre the real exam, they als tk a mck(模拟) exam. Their levels f anxiety were als be recrded and assessed(评定), every day fr 40 days befre the real exam and als n the day f that exam.
The result was nt what she expected. Anxiety n the day f the test did nt predict(预测) exam perfrmance at all. It was the level f knwledge in the mck exam and the earlier practices that predicted it. Thse wh perfrmed well in the mck exams als did well in the real test, n matter hw anxius they were n the day.
It turned ut that what really affected students were high levels f anxiety during the weeks befre the exam. The greater a student’s anxiety in the days befre the exam, the lwer his r her knwledge gain was. T reduce this anxiety, she gives sme advice fr students when they revise. First, they can raise their cnfidence in their wn abilities by reminding(提醒) themselves f hw much they knw. Secnd, they can diminish the imprtance f the test by reminding themselves that, thugh it is imprtant, it is nt a life r death situatin. It really isn’t.
