I began learning languages at the age f five, when my parents sent me t an after-schl French class at my primary schl. My parents, wh speak English, stressed using different languages at hme — even Grandpa culd speak a freign language! I dn’t remember much frm thse early classes, aside frm learning different clurs and days f the week ver and ver, but I d knw that it was during these mments that I first discvered the jy f jurneying away frm my surrundings with wrds. Because in French class it was easy t imagine we were smewhere else, away-far away-frm the present, which was a really attractive idea t a yung child with a wild imaginatin.
I stuck with French as I grew up; it was ne f thse strng relatinships that prvides cmfrt. It wasn’t until I began learning Spanish (西班牙语) at age 11 that I experienced a mre transfrmative (变化的) relatinship with languages.
Lking back, it strikes me that Spanish, fr me, was always abut feelings. At the beginning the fcus was n learning wrds and grammar t describe hw I was feeling, but I smehw ended up with a language that helped me express myself better than my native language.
After years f studying Spanish at schl, and living in Spain, my Spanish came t match, and perhaps even exceed (超过), my English. Despite having returned t the UK ten years ag, nw I still ften find myself stuck in English cnversatins, unable t express a thught r feeling with quite the same depth as I wuld be able t in Spanish.
Spanish affrds me anther kind f liveliness. I’m nt just “in lve”. T me, “te ech de mens” huses mre feeling than “I miss yu,” which takes me back t a time in my life that I miss a lt.
      4. What is the authr’s native language?
      A. French.B. English.C. Spanish.D. Chinese.
      5. Why did the authr feel enjyable in French class?

      C. He culd turn t his parents fr help.D. He fund it similar t English.
      6. Hw is Spanish different frm ther languages fr the authr?
      A. It uses a hst f simpler wrds.B. It leads t mre misunderstanding.
      C. It has mre difficult grammar rules.D. It allws him t better express feelings.

What are the limits f the human bdy? Is there a pint at which it is physically impssible t d smething?
“One thing we’ve all learned in the last 30 years r s is that just abut anything is humanly pssible,” says Dr. Jack Wilmre, authr f Physilgy (生理学) f Sprt and Exercise. “As time ges by, I think yu’ll see mre recrds cntinue t fall in every sprt. The talent pl is better than ever. With mre and better athletes invlved and cmpeting, recrds will fall and new standards will be set.”
Many believed it was physically impssible fr a human t run a mile in under fur minutes, but Rger Bannister prved that thery wrng with a three-minute, 59-secnd mile in 1954. Tday, sub-fur-minute miles are cnsidered rutine even in high schl. And Bb Beamn stretched human perfrmance in the 1968 Olympics with his histric lng jump f 8. 90 metres. In an event where a recrd is usually brken by mere inches, he brke the previus jump recrd by mre than 21 inches, but even his recrd was brken in 1991.
One factr is nw becming mre understd and ppular: sprts psychlgy (心理学). Getting inside the athlete’s head can be as effective as training and lng wrkuts. Accrding t Wilmre, the psychlgical aspect f sprts has becme mre and mre esteemed. He pints ut that mst prfessinal teams have hired (聘用) sprts psychlgists fr their players.
In additin, every aspect f athletics-training, nutritin, injury treatment-is far better than it’s ever been. “Besides, children tday tend t master ne r tw sprts instead f participating in several as was cmmn twenty-five years ag,” Wilmre says. “That means they start cncentrating n a sprt much earlier and mre intensely (密集地), and they becme much better at it.”
“There’s a lt we dn’t knw yet abut the human bdy,” he adds. “And ne f thse things is the full range f human ptential. It wuld be flish t try and put limits n what the human bdy can d.”
      8. Which f the fllwing sentences will Wilmre prbably agree with?
      A. Athletes will becme the mst famus peple.
      B. Athletes will cntinue t surprise us with their achievements.

      C. T intrduce tw great athletes.
      D. T prve the limits f the bdy can be pushed.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “esteemed” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. valuedB. similarC. traditinalD. difficult
      11. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. The histry f sprts recrds brken by well-knwn athletes ver time.
      B. Hw sprts psychlgy wrks t help athletes enhance their perfrmance.
      C. Human bdy’s ptential can keep expanding with better training and supprt.
      D. The differences between present-day athletes and thse in earlier times.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have led t significant breakthrughs in translatin technlgies. AI translatin is useful in sme situatins. Fr example, helping teachers cmmunicate with parents wh speak a different language, r when travelling. Translatin technlgy may even help prtect endangered languages frm disappearing by supprting nline cllectins f literature. With AI-pwered technlgy in these digital libraries, mre peple can appreciate these wrks.
But while technlgy can translate messages, it misses an imprtant part f human cmmunicatin — the cultural nuances (细微差别) behind the wrds. S, while AI translatin can bridge language gaps and make cmmunicatin easier, it’s imprtant t be clear abut the benefits and challenges it presents. Relying nly n technlgy t translate between languages will finally lead t misunderstandings and a less rich human experience.
The new technlgy als cmes with limitatins. In 2019, wrkers at an immigratin (移民) center in the United States used AI translatin t deal with an asylum (庇护) case. The vice tl culd nt understand the applicant’s accent, and the persn was kept there fr six mnths withut being able t explain clearly. In 2021, a plice fficer used Ggle Translate t ask a Spanish-speaking wman if he culd search her car. The app chse a wrng wrd, which caused cnfusin.
Learning additinal languages als stands ut as ne f the best ways t imprve urselves, with benefits fr brain health, scial skills, cultural understanding, and career pprtunities. A study in 2022 fund that peple wh speak mre than ne language have quicker minds and may delay brain aging. It als shwed that learning several languages helps peple respect and understand each ther better.
While AI-pwered translatin technlgy has its uses, a great deal can be lst if we rely nly n it t cmmunicate. The nuances f languages, and what they say abut different cultures, are difficult t cmmunicate via translatin tls. And the benefits f being bilingual (双语的) r multilingual — bth persnally and fr the wider sciety — risk being lst if we dn’t supprt secnd language learning.
      12. What des paragraph 1 stress abut AI translatin?
      A. Its literary value.B. Its advanced tls.
      C. Its future develpment.D. Its practical applicatins.
      13. What can be inferred abut AI translatin frm the examples in paragraph 3?
      A. It takes little time t be reliable in daily life.
      B. It can make serius errrs in imprtant cases.
      C. It wrks better with written texts than speech.
      D. It will replace human translatrs sner r later.
      14. Why is the 2022 study mentined in the text?
      A. T supprt a pint.B. T stress a prblem.
      C. T intrduce a tpic.D. T questin a belief.
      15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. AI Translatin: The Technlgy Develps Fast
      B. Relying n Technlgy: The Csts Are Unseen
      C. AI Era: Why We Still Need Language Learning
      D. Language Educatin: Hw AI Changes the Way We Learn
