In a remte rainfrest n the Hawaiian island, Bernie Krause kneels silently, adjusting a pair f micrphnes

ecsystem’s acustic (声学的) DNA — a sundscape that may sn disappear. Fr ver 50 years, this 84-year-ld
biacustician has travelled t Earth’s mst threatened habitats, recrding what he calls “nature’s grand rchestra
(管弦乐队).” His missin? T preserve the planet’s acustic heritage befre human nise silences it frever.
Krause’s jurney began uncnventinally, In the 1960s, he was a sessin musician fr Mtwn and played
synthesizer with the band Beaver & Krause. But a key mment came in 1968 when he recrded a frest fr an
album. “I nticed each creature ccupied its wn acustic space, like instruments in an rchestra,” he recalls. This
revelatin birthed his life’s wrk — sundscape eclgy (声景生态学).
Armed with recrding equipment, Krause has since captured ver 5,000 hurs f sund frm 15,000 species
acrss every cntinent. In 1988, he recrded a frest alive with birdsng. After selective tree cuttings, which
wdcutters claimed “didn’t harm wildlife”, he returned. Everywhere he lked, the grass seemed unchanged. But
actually, it was damaged. Over 50% f species’ vices had disappeared. “The silence,” Krause says, “was luder
      than any chainsaw (锯子).”
Fr Krause, sund is mre than data; it’s emtinal memry. He recalls a recrding f a pack in Algnquin
Park. When he played it back, a yung wlf apprached his speaker. “It recgnized its family’s vices,” he smiles.
“That cnnectin-between species, acrss the acustic web-is what we’re serving.”
As earphnes pick up a rare Hawaiian hneycreeper’s call, Krause shuts his eyes. “Listen,” he whispers. “That
bird might nt sing here in ten years. But n my hard disk, it’ll sing frever.”
      4. Why did Krause recrd ecsystem’s acustic DNA?
      A. T prevent habitats frm danger. B. T prtect natural sunds at risk.
      C. T search fr man-made nises. D. T prmte. his grand rchestra.
      5. What cntributed t Krause’s lifelng wrk?
      A. The jb f being a musician. B. The wrk fr his wn album.
      C. The vivid sunds frm frests. D. The creatures’ sund psitins.
      6. What can be inferred frm Krause’s wrk in 1988?
      A. Nature can repair its damage quickly. B. Sund space can be destryed unseen.
      C. Species lss can be caused unnticed. D. Human nise can break silence easily.
      7. What des Krause imply in the last tw paragraphs?
      A. The basis fr his research. B. The passin fr his survey.
      C. The limitatins f his study. D. The values f his recrdings.

Fr mre than 3,500 years, the remains f the Xiahe peple lay undisturbed in Xinjiang until they were
unearthed in 1979. Amng the treasures dug up was the ldest preserved cheese in the wrld, sptted arund the
      remains’ neck.
Nw a team f researchers frm the Chinese Academy f Sciences reprts the first genetic (基因的) analysis
f the cheese. Their results give us a vivid accunt f a rich Brnze Age culture that exchanged animals with ther
neighburing peples and may have helped spread cheese arund East Asia, reflecting their crss-cultural
cmmunicatin. Just why they were buried with the stuff, thugh, remains imperfectly understd.
During their analysis, the team identified the DNA frm a gat whse milk went int the cheeses, befre
cmparing it with 185 previusly sequenced gat genes. The genetic prfile f the Xiahe gat was similar t that
f gats belnging t ancient Eurasian Steppe peple, meaning the Xiahe may have learned cheese-making frm
      them.
All the Xiahe cheeses wuld have been prduced by drying kefir, a milk-based drink made with bacteria (细
菌 ) such as Lactbacillus kefiranfaciens. The team, therefre, sequenced the DNA f that ne bacterium and
cmpared it with 15 mdern varieties in rder t identify its place within that species’ family tree. Their analysis
shwed that it belnged t a subspecies that culd have spread with kefir-making custms frm Xinjiang t regins
      including Tibet.
The team suspect that the cheese was an attractive alternative t raw milk. But it is pssible that it was the
kefir drink, rather than the cheese, that was the main attractin, says Paul Kindstedt, a cheese chemist and histrian
wh was nt invlved in the research. It hlds abut 1% alchl by vlume. Peple in Mnglia tday use kefir t
make milk-based alchl; the Xiahe may have dne s t.
“Ancient-cheese DNA analysis-f which this may be the first example-culd reveal secrets abut numerus
ther cultures. There are dairy remains n 7,000-year-ld Eurpean pts, fr example, and cheese may als have
been used in ancient Egyptian burial practices,” says Dr Kindstedt.
      8. What can be inferred abut the Xiahe peple in paragraph 2?
      A. They preferred an undisturbed life. B. They interacted with ther cultures.
      C. They cnducted dd burial practices. D. They exchanged animals fr cheese.
      9. Why was the DNA f Lactbacillus kefiranfaciens studied?
      A. T track the cheese-making rigin. B. T clarify the cheese-making steps.
      C. T figure ut its structure. D. T dig int its superirity.
      10. What is Paul Kindstedt’s pinin n the cheese?
      第 5页/共 12页
      A. It came frm Mnglians’ finding. B. It may be a substitute f raw milk.
      C. Its appeal was pssibly-frm kefir. D. Its attractin was affected by milk.
      11. Hw des the authr emphasize ancient-cheese DNA analysis’ significance?
      A. By explaining a cncept. B. By giving a definitin.
      C. By prviding statistics. D. By quting an expert.

The rapid develpment in artificial intelligence, r AI, has had the effect f bthering and transfrming
sciecnmic activities acrss industries ranging frm health, trade, educatin and even the imprvement f
      climate change.
Hwever, as industries and gvernments acrss the glbe are ready t take advantage f these pssibilities,
experts added that Africa needs supprtive plicies and imprved facilities t seize the limitless pprtunities f AI
t quicken its develpment. Mrever, the experts said that the cntinent shuld nt wait t have the rules in place
in rder t welcme the technlgy.
Fayaz King, an expert in digital public facilities frm Zimbabwe, said AI has the ptential t cntribute up t
$1.2 trillin t the African ecnmy by 2030, representing a 5.6 percent increase in the cntinent’s GDP by 2030.
Alfred Ongere, an infrmatin technlgy expert and the funder f Artificial Intelligence Kenya, a
nngvernmental rganizatin, said it is f much imprtance t manage AI in African cuntries because it can
ptentially be used in spreading misinfrmatin, fake news, and disinfrmatin. Hwever, plicymakers shuld
first imprve the state f the AI ecsystem.
Despite arguing against prper cntrl by African gvernments, Ongere said that it is still significant t prtect
cnsumers frm the risks caused by the uncntrlled applicatin f AI n the cntinent. He appealed t African
gvernments t develp an AI rad map r plicy paper withut frcing rules that culd ptentially damage a
prmising sectr. “AI-fcused slutins shuld slve real-wrld challenges such as rural develpment and financial
crisis. Mre imprtantly, effrts shuld be directed tward ensuring the cmmercial viability (商业可行性) f
      these slutins,” Ongere said.
King said that managing AI in Africa shuld deal with mral cnsideratins such as data privacy, prejudice
and transparency (透明性). As the use f AI cntinues t expand, it is likely that mre cuntries will fllw in
intrducing such regulatins. “The questin f management, especially in the African cntext is that Africa is nt
mature t have cmplete and sund rules n AI because Africa lacks the level f technlgy develpment that
exists in develped natins.” King said.
      第 6页/共 12页
      12. What des the authr want t stress in paragraph 1?
      A. The effect f climate change n AI. B. The AI’s influence n varius fields.
      C. The breakthrughs f trade industry. D. The rapid develpment f educatin.
      13. Why is it imprtant t cntrl AI in African cuntries?
      A. It can be illegally spread. B. It may affect ecsystems.
      C. It can be imprperly used. D. It may ruin ecnmic state.
      14. Which f the fllwing statement wuld Ongere agree with?
      A. AI shuld fcus n actual prblems. B. AI can avid ethical cnsideratins.
C AI can help peple draw up plicies. D. AI shuld prtect users’ data privacy.
      15. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Africa’s Shrtage f Plicies In Rules
      B. She Future f AI technlgy In Africa
      C. Africa’s Calls t Cntrl AI Grw Luder
      D. AI’s Cntributins t the African Ecnmy
