In April, when much f the U. S. is cvered in bright daffdils and pink buds, my Nrthern Clrad garden is filled with dry flwer stalks (茎秆)。
I live in a twn where the cld lasts lnger, and the brwn stalks in my garden leave me feeling ut f step. But many landscape design experts suggest maintaining stands f dried flwers and grasses t give the eye cnsistent pleasure thrugh the winter. In my yard, I left the sunflwers, rudbeckia stalks and side-ats grama. After the killing frsts and snw in cld mnths, these “winter interest” stands ffer variatins f height, clr and texture (质感) against the seasn’s leveling gray-white. In February and March, I was grateful t have smething t lk at besides the piles f snw.
These plants I’ve let stand, thugh, d mre than please my eyes. The tw-t-eight-ft stalks have frmed smething like a fishing net, catching fallen leaves and pulling them clse t the sil. Mats f leaves nw blanket the grund, prviding a habitat fr pllinatrs (传粉昆虫) alng with their eggs and larvae (幼虫). This als regulates the sil’s temperature, especially with snw n the grund. With this prtectin, plants aren’t tricked by early sunlight int spruting (发芽) t sn and being buried by snw.
The pet Adrienne Rich nce wrte, “All new learning lks at first like chas.” Here in the garden, I’ve learned that chas prvides mre pssibilities fr grwth. I lve watching the early birds mve thrugh the brwn stalks in ur side yard, selecting lng nes fr their nests. The garden has taught me t embrace chas, lk beynd it and find hpe.
Sn enugh, it will becme warm. Then I’ll walk thrugh the garden and tear ut last year’s grwth t make rm fr the kind f splendr expected in a flwer garden. But fr nw, I’ll watch the birds gather nesting material frm the still-standing grasses and take cmfrt in knwing that the dying plant material I’ve left behind prtects the bees and butterflies that will sn help bring beauty int this wrld.
24. What did the authr d with the dried stalks in her garden?
A. Leave them as they were.
B. Tend them with great care.

A 25. D 26. C 27. A
根据第二段“But many landscape design experts suggest maintaining stands f dried flwers and grasses t give the eye cnsistent pleasure thrugh the winter. In my yard, I left the sunflwers, rudbeckia stalks and side-ats grama. 故选A。
根据第二段中“After the killing frsts and snw in cld mnths, these “winter interest” stands ffer variatins f height, clr and texture (质感) against the seasn’s leveling gray-white.
根据第三段“These plants I’ve let stand, thugh, d mre than please my eyes.
根据第四段“The pet Adrienne Rich nce wrte, “All new learning lks at first like chas.” Here in the garden, I’ve learned that chas prvides mre pssibilities fr grwth. I lve watching the early birds mve thrugh the brwn stalks in ur side yard, selecting lng nes fr their nests. The garden has taught me t embrace chas, lk beynd it and find hpe. 故选A。
C
A single-minded, tireless drive — that’s what it takes t be successful. Be “all in”. Burn the bats behind us.
That message is rted in ur sciety, frm self-help bks t scial media influencers all telling us that we need t cmmit mre. The wrld cntinually sends the signal t narrwly define yur gals.
In my senir year, I became the fastest high-schl miler in the cuntry when I ran a 4:01 mile. When my prgress as a runner reached a bttleneck, my sprts psychlgist tld me a stry abut a wrld-class runner wh had becme stuck while struggling t make the transitin frm success in cllege t Olympic-level perfrmance. “What helped her break thrugh?” I asked. “Knitting (编织).” he replied. She had taken up knitting t relax and t take her mind ff running. I was t yung and stubbrn t fllw the advice. I dubled dwn — but never ran faster than my high-schl recrd r brke a 4-minute mile.
In the years since, wrking as a cach with tp-class perfrmers, I kept nticing that their single-minded fcus was getting in their way. Their fcus n achieving specific gals had becme a cnstant, disabling signal that they were nt measuring up. This single-minded apprach was backfiring.
Research backs this up. Researchers at Michigan State University lked at ver 100 years f Nbel Prize-winning scientists and fund they were mre likely than their less-accmplished peers t have creative interests utside f their research. The prize-winners were 22 times mre likely t perfrm, sing r act as a hbby;12 times mre likely t pursue creative writing; and abut 7 times mre likely t participate in a craft like sculpting.
T be sure: The mre we care, and the mre ur jb r pursuit feels like a part f wh we are, the harder we’ll wrk. That’s helpful t a certain pint. But such narrwing cmes with a dwnside. As we get rid f ther parts f urselves, and that ne activity becmes an ever bigger presence, fear starts t take ver. We dn’t just want t succeed. We have t.
When utcmes are all that matter, ur immediate respnse isn’t t becme a fighter. It’s t retreat (退缩). S, the secret is t g in a different directin. When the wrld screams t g narrw, tp-class perfrmers learn t g brad.
28. Hw did the authr respnd after hearing the stry f the wrld-class runner?
A. He pushed himself harder.
B. He adjusted his training methds.
C. He tk sme time ff frm running.
D. He adpted knitting as a stress-reliever.
29. What d we knw abut Nbel Prize-winning scientists in the research?
A. They spent mre time n research than thers.
B. They avided entertainments t maintain fcus.
C. Their diverse hbbies cntributed t their achievements.
D. Their research cvers a wider range f fields than their peers.
30. What is the authr’s attitude twards the single-minded apprach?
A. Favrable.B. Disapprving.
C. Tlerant.D. Unclear.
31. Which f the fllwing might be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Why “All in” Is N Recipe fr Success
B. Breaking Thrugh Fear in Cmpetitive Fields
C. Why Hbbies Outweigh Prfessinal Training
D. Narrwing Dwn Yur Fcus t Achieve Mre
A 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第三段中“I was t yung and stubbrn t fllw the advice. I dubled dwn — but never ran faster than my high-schl recrd r brke a 4-minute mile. 故选A。
根据第五段“Research backs this up.
根据第四段“In the years since, wrking as a cach with tp-class perfrmers, I kept nticing that their single-minded fcus was getting in their way. Their fcus n achieving specific gals had becme a cnstant, disabling signal that they were nt measuring up. This single-minded apprach was backfiring. 以及倒数第二段中“But such narrwing cmes with a dwnside.
根据第一段“A single-minded, tireless drive — that’s what it takes t be successful. Be “all in”. Burn the bats behind us. 及最后一段“When utcmes are all that matter, ur immediate respnse isn’t t becme a fighter. It’s t retreat (退缩). S, the secret is t g in a different directin. When the wrld screams t g narrw, tp-class perfrmers learn t g brad. 因此,A选项“Why “All in” Is N Recipe fr Success (为什么“全身心投入”不是成功的秘诀)”最适合作为标题。故选A。
D
Picture a rbt. What d yu see? A metal machine built t last frever? Unfrtunately, this very quality nw threatens t drwn the planet in extremely durable (持久的) e-waste. What if, instead, thse machines were designed t break dwn and disappear — like life des? In a new study, researchers crafted a rbtic arm, and a cntrller t perate it, frm prk gelatin (明胶) and plant cellulse (纤维素) — materials strng enugh t functin yet delicate enugh t degrade (降解) in the sil. After testing, bth structures brke dwn in sil within weeks.
Bidegradable rbtics ften falls under the umbrella f sft rbtics. The field riginated frm materials science and chemistry rather than cnventinal rbts that cme frm mechanical engineering. But a lt f early sft rbts still relied n chemical materials that cntinue t exist as pllutin.
Pingdng Wei, a materials scientist at Westlake University in Hangzhu, teamed up with his friend Zhuang Zhang, a rbtics engineer nw at Fudan University in Shanghai, t assemble (组装) rbts fr the study.
