A new study has fund that a child’s reading speed can be imprved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece f text. The research, led by Dr. Steven Stagg f Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), examined the benefits f letter spacing and clured verlays (颜色标注) amng children.
Tw grups f children, dyslexic (诵读困难) and nn-dyslexic children, were asked t read fur texts with either standard r extra-large letter spacing, bth with and withut a clured verlay. “Our findings strngly suggest that teachers can be cnfident that all children wuld be helped by increased letter spacing in reading materials,” Dr. Stagg added. “While we fund that clured verlays prvided little benefit, we suggest children shuld be encuraged t use verlays if they find these help their reading. Clured verlays may nt increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina (持久力). Previus research suggests their benefits may nt becme apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the shrt reading duratin f the tests in ur study may have put clured verlays at a disadvantage.”

      A. Their benefits fr reading stamina are immediate within shrt tests.
      B. They are equally effective as increased letter spacing fr all children.
      C. They shuld be abandned since they prvide n reading speed benefits.
      D. Their ptential advantages may require lnger reading sessins t emerge.
B 29. A 30. D
根据文章第三段内容“On average, the dyslexia grup shwed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the grup f nn-dyslexic children shwed a 5% increase.(平均而言,患有阅读障碍的儿童组的阅读速度提高了 13%,而未患阅读障碍的儿童组则提高了 5%)”可知,字母间距增大后,两组儿童(诵读困难组和非诵读困难组)的阅读速度均提升。
故选A项。
根据文章末尾段内容“Clured verlays may nt increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina (持久力). Previus research suggests their benefits may nt becme apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the shrt reading duratin f the tests in ur study may have put clured verlays at a disadvantage.(彩色覆盖膜可能不会提高阅读速度,但可能会延长阅读耐力。
      D
Fr 75 years, astrnmers have been searching fr extraterrestrial (地球外的) intelligence, ften shrtened t SETT. SETT invlves listening fr radi r ptical signals sent by intelligent civilizatins, but, s far, n artificial signals have been detected. The failure f SETI is called “The Great Silence”, but despite this, many scientists are cnfident that intelligent aliens d exist. There are thught t be at least 10 billin habitable wrlds in ur galaxy, and billins f years have passed in which any life n them culd have develped intelligence and technlgy.
METI, r messaging extraterrestrial intelligence, has been less cmmn. It invlves talking rather than listening. T sme, it is a cntrversial activity. The first attempts at cmmunicatin were unrealistic “messages in a bttle”. In 1972, NASA launched the Pineer 10 spacecraft twards Jupiter, which carried a bard with a line drawing f a man and a wman as well as symbls t shw where the craft riginated. In 1977, NASA fllwed this up with a glden recrd attached t the Vyager I craft. The 12-inch recrd held sunds and images chsen t cnvey the diversity f life n Earth.
Bth spacecrafts have since left the slar system. At their current speeds, it will be tens f thusands f years befre they reach anther star system. In the immensity f space, the dds that they will be fund are extremely small.
Nw, an internatinal team f astrnmers plans t use the wrld’s largest radi telescpe, FAST, lcated in China, t beam a message twards millins f stars that are 10,000 t 20,000 light years away. The new message is a cmbinatin f previus nes.
NASA signals t its remte spacecraft, meanwhile, have reached fur nearby stars. But perhaps we have already betrayed ur existence t aliens. Radi and televisin have been leaking int space fr nearly a century, in an expanding bubble f cmmunicatins that spans millins f stars-in thery, at least.
The ethical questin raised by METT is: Shuld we be sending a message at all? Scientists are divided. Befre he died, Stephen Hawking was utspken abut the danger f cmmunicating with aliens. If they have superir technlgy and are malign, they might destry us. Others see n prblem, given that the signals take millennia (一千年) t reach their destinatin. N internatinal rules gvern METI, s the experiments will cntinue.
My wn take is that the risk is abstract when the message will take millennia t be received. We have mre direct and existential threats than evil alien empires. My guess is that extraterrestrial intelligence and tech are s advanced that they are hard t cmprehend. After all, we share 99% f ur DNA with chimps and can’t cmmunicate with them.
      31. What is “The Great Silence” in the cntext f SETI?
      A. The absence f sund in uter space.
      B. The quietness f habitable wrlds in the galaxy.
      C. The lack f cmmunicatin between different space agencies.
      D. The failure t detect artificial signals frm intelligent civilizatins.
      32. Which f the fllwing statements might the authr agree with?
      A. It’s unwise t cntinue METI withut internatinal rules.
      B. Scientists shuld priritize addressing immediate threats.
      C. We may establish cnnectin with aliens in the near future.
      D. Cmmunicatin with aliens may lead t humanity’s destructin.
      33. What can be inferred frm the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
      A. We shuld give up lking fr aliens fr the mment.
      B. We shuld first learn hw t cmmunicate with ur clsest relative.
      C. Cmmunicatin with aliens frm ther intelligent civilizatins is unlikely.
      D. Genetic similarity is n guarantee f successful cmmunicatin with aliens.
      34. What is mainly discussed in the passage?
      A. The significance f SETT and METI prjects.
      B. The pssibility f finding habitable planets in the universe.
      C. The effrts made t search fr intelligent life beynd the earth.
      D. The challenges in detecting artificial signals frm ther planets.
D 32. B 33. C 34. C
根据第一段第二句“SETT invlves listening fr radi r ptical signals sent by intelligent civilizatins, but, s far, n artificial signals have been detected.
根据最后一段一二句“My wn take is that the risk is abstract when the message will take millennia t be received. We have mre direct and existential threats than evil alien empires.
根据最后一段第三句“My guess is that extraterrestrial intelligence and tech are s advanced that they are hard t cmprehend.

Mst peple, at ne time r anther, have been n the receiving end f a randm act f kindness-that mment f pure altruism (利他主义) when a cmplete stranger stps t ffer aid, genersity r cmpassin. In a wrld where peple can be s fcused n what they’re ding, a randm act f kindness can make all the difference.
They can be relatively insignificant. Hannah Bailey frm Lndn, fr example, tld the Metr newspaper abut hw she was given her fruit and vegetable shpping fr free. The seller did her a kindness when it happened that she didn’t have any change t pay. She was happy abut it all day.
The city f Naples has lng had a traditin called ‘caffe sspes’. When buying cffee, a persn wh has recently been lucky wuld purchase tw cups but nly drink ne, leaving the secnd ne annymusly, ut f the gdness f their heart, fr a pr persn t claim fr free. This traditin is nw mre cmmn wrldwide.
Hwever, in sme cases, these little acts can be a matter f life and death. Take, fr example, the unnamed passenger, wh in June 2018 fell ff a statin platfrm nt an electric railway track in Trnt, Canada. A quick-thinking, but even nw unknwn, bystander selflessly leapt dwn t pull him t safety.
S, why d it? Often, the acts aren’t reciprcated (回报的). The peple never meet again. Accrding t UK charity The Mental Health Fundatin, acts like these can “give ur lives new purpse, shw us ther perspectives n ur wn prblems and even make us feel euphric-an extremely strng feeling f happiness and excitement.”
S give it a try. Hld pen a dr fr smene, deliver a cmpliment.
      40. Why was Bailey given sme fruit fr free?
      _______________________________________________________________________________
      41. Hw des the traditin “caffe sspes” wrk in Naples?
      _______________________________________________________________________________
      42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.

      43. What specific act culd yu d in yur daily life t spread kindness? And explain why it matters. (In abut 40 wrds)
      _______________________________________________________________________________
40. Because the seller did her a kindness when it happened that she didn't have any change t pay.

根据第二段中的“Hannah Bailey frm Lndn, fr example, tld the Metr newspaper abut hw she was given her fruit and vegetable shpping fr free. The seller did her a kindness when it happened that she didn’t have any change t pay. Because the seller did her a kindness when it happened that she didn’t have any change t pay.
根据第三段中的“ When buying cffee, a persn wh has recently been lucky wuld purchase tw cups but nly drink ne, leaving the secnd ne annymusly, ut f the gdness f their heart, fr a pr persn t claim fr free. In Naples, when buying cffee, a persn wh has recently been lucky wuld purchase tw cups but nly drink ne, leaving the secnd ne annymusly fr a pr persn t claim fr free.
根据第四段中的“Take, fr example, the unnamed passenger, wh in June 2018 fell ff a statin platfrm nt an electric railway track in Trnt, Canada. A quick-thinking, but even nw unknwn, bystander selflessly leapt dwn t pull him t safety. A passenger, wh fell ff the statin platfrm, was saved by a quick-thinking bystander and cnsequently they became gd friends. Accrding t the text, the quick-thinking bystander wh saved the passenger’s life still nw was unknwn, s they didn’t becme gd friends.
One specific act I culd d is t hld pen a dr fr smene. It matters because it shws respect and cnsideratin fr thers, which can als bring cnvenience, making them feel appreciated and valued.
