In the depths f Abernethy Frest, researcher and cnservatinist Jack Bamber has just placed deer meat in the hpe f attracting every nearby predatr (捕食者). It may sund weird, but it’s all part f a plan t catch the attentin f predatrs wh might therwise be interested in lunching n a capercallie (松鸡) chick and it’s quite nrmal. Capercaillies are large, secretive birds knwn fr their striking fan tails. Hwever, in Sctland, their ppulatin is critically lw, with nly abut 500 left during 2021 — 2022.
Bamber’s methd, knwn as diversinary feeding, invlves leaving meat near capercaillie habitats during the breeding (繁殖) seasn. The gal is t prvide predatrs like pine martens and badgers — bth prtected species — with an easier meal, reducing the chances f them attacking capercaillie nests. This apprach helps prtect capercaillies withut harming predatrs.
Initial trials have been prmising, shwing an 83% reductin in nest predatin in areas where meat was prvided. Hwever, this is just ne f many strategies needed t save the species. Other effrts include educating the public t avid disturbing the birds, particularly in places like the Cairngrms Natinal Park, where dgs and hikers can unintentinally stress the birds r disturb their habitats.
Carlyn Rbertsn, manager f the Cairngrms Capercaillie Prject, wrks t minimize human disturbances. He said, “Dgs, even n leads, can cause capercallies t feel threatened. Public awareness campaigns have helped lcal dg wners understand the imprtance f keeping their pets under cntrl. Additinally, initiatives like the ‘Lek it be’ campaign urge peple t leave the birds undisturbed during the breeding seasn.”
The species faces multiple threats, including habitat lss, cnflicts with deer fences, and the impact f climate change, which affect fd availability and chick survival. Despite the challenges, effrts cntinue with hpe that the species can recver. These cnservatin (保护) actins nt nly aim t save the capercaillie but als benefit ther wildlife and the ecsystem as a whle.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “weird” in paragraph 1 mean?
      A. Strange.B. Pleasant.C. Disappinting.D. Cstly.
      29. What is the effect f initial trials t prtect capercaillies?
      A. It is unclear.B. It is ill-advised.
      C. It is effective.D. It is shrt-lived.
      30. What can we infer abut these cnservatin actins frm Rbertsn’s wrds?
      A. They invlve multi-party effrts.B. They bring abut additinal csts.
      C. They rely n researchers’ wrk.D. They discurage lcal dg wners.
      31. What des the authr intend t explain in the last paragraph?
      A. The hardships the lcals suffered.
      B. The prblems researchers faced.
      C. The backgrund f the new plicy.
      D. The significance f these cnservatin actins.
A 29. C 30. A 31. D
根据画线词的上文“In the depths f Abernethy Frest, researcher and cnservatinist Jack Bamber has just placed deer meat in the hpe f attracting every nearby predatr (捕食者). 故选A项。
根据第三段中“Initial trials have been prmising, shwing an 83% reductin in nest predatin in areas where meat was prvided. (最初的试验很有希望,在提供肉类的地区,巢穴捕食减少了83%)”可知,初步试验有效保护了松鸡。故选C项。
      【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中Carlyn Rbertsn所说的话“Dgs, even n leads, can cause capercallies t feel threatened. Public awareness campaigns have helped lcal dg wners understand the imprtance f keeping their pets under cntrl. Additinally, initiatives like the ‘Lek it be’ campaign urge peple t leave the birds undisturbed during the breeding seasn. (即使是拴着绳的狗,也会让松鸡感到威胁。公众宣传活动帮助当地养狗人士认识到管好宠物的重要性。此外,“别打扰它们”等倡议活动呼吁人们在松鸡繁殖季节不要惊扰这些鸟类)”可知,Rbertsn提到公众宣传和“别打扰它们”倡议活动等多个保护松鸡的做法,表明保护行动需要多方参与。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Despite the challenges, effrts cntinue with hpe that the species can recver. These cnservatin (保护) actins nt nly aim t save the capercaillie but als benefit ther wildlife and the ecsystem as a whle. (尽管面临诸多挑战,保护工作仍在继续,人们希望这一物种能够恢复。这些保护行动不仅旨在拯救松鸡,还将惠及其他野生动物乃至整个生态系统)”可知,保护行动不仅旨在拯救该物种,还惠及其他野生动物和生态系统,因此作者是在强调保护行动的广泛意义。故选D项。

“Predictive generalizable cmputatinal mdels allw t uncver bilgical prcesses in a fast and accurate way. These methds can effectively cnduct large-scale cmputatinal experiments, bsting and guiding traditinal experimental appraches,” says Raul Rabadan, senir authr f the new paper.
Traditinal bilgical methds shw hw cells functin r respnd t changes, but they lack the ability t frecast these prcesses. Recent advances in AI and massive bilgical data cllectins are making this change pssible. Hwever, using AI t frecast gene activity inside cells has been a greater challenge — until nw.
Rabadan’s team develped an AI mdel trained n gene expressin data frm ver 1.3 millin nrmal human cells. Unlike earlier mdels trained n limited data, this system uses genetic infrmatin and accessibility data t frecast which genes are active in any cell. The prcess is similar t hw language mdels like MindLink, an AI chat tl, wrk: It learns patterns frm data and applies them t new situatins. Testing shwed the mdel culd accurately frecast gene activity in cell types it had nt encuntered, matching experimental results clsely.
The researchers applied the AI mdel t study pediatric leukemia, a childhd cancer caused by inherited mutatins The mdel predicted hw these mutatins disturb critical prcesses in cells, a finding later cnfirmed thrugh experiments. This understanding highlights the specific mechanisms driving the disease. The AI mdel culd als reveal unexplred regins f the genme, ften linked t cancer. These “dark” regins d nt cde fr prteins but may play key rles in disease.
Already, Rabadan is wrking with researchers at Clumbia and ther universities, explring different cancers, frm brain t bld cancers, learning the grammar f regulatin in nrmal cells, and hw cells change in the prcess f cancer develpment.
      32. What is a prblem abut traditinal bilgical methds?
      A. They are difficult t cmbine with AI.
      B. They can’t frecast hw cells wrk.
      C. They are expensive in plenty f research.
      D. They hardly cllect massive bilgical data.
      33. Why des the authr mentin MindLink in paragraph 4?
