The last time I visited my parents, I brrwed a nvel frm the shelves in my ld bedrm. The bks there nce belnged t me, but ver the decades, my father has taken ver the space. It’s fitting.
I grew up in a huse full f bks, free t explre anything, as lng as I returned it. But that’s harder nw. My parents, in their 80s, still live in Manhattan, while I’m in Ls Angeles. The bk I grabbed was a nvel by S. A. Csby. At first, I was surprised my father knew f him, but why nt? Fr as lng as I can remember, he’s been a regular at his neighbrhd bkstre. He used t say he wuldn’t mind aging as lng as he culd read. Even nw, I ften find him with a bk, thugh I fear he’s begun t fall ut f the narrative (叙述).
I didn’t read the bk until I was back in Suthern Califrnia. I didn’t want my father t knw I had the bk. I didn’t want him t feel any stress abut it, thugh the tw f us have been talking bks ever since I was 12. I didn’t want t knw what he might r might nt recall.
Opening it felt like pening a cnversatin with my father, retracing his steps and reading thrugh his eyes. I enjyed the nvel, thugh that’s beside the pint. What struck me mst was a pltline abut feeling sad fr ne’s parents, a prcess I’m beginning t understand. When I finished, I ran my fingers ver my father’s mark n the cver, thse letters he’d pressed int the cver with a hand-held metal press, spelling ut a name the same as mine. Then I slipped the bk int my suitcase, certain t return it next time I visit.
      24. Why is it fitting fr the father t take ver the authr’s ld space?
      A. Because bth are attached t reading.
      B. Because the father lves cllecting bks.

Cats perfrm better than human babies n a simple measure f language cmprehensin. The research, published Oct. 4 in the jurnal Scientific Reprts, revealed that. Research in the past five years has shwn that cats can recgnize nt nly their wn names but thse f familiar humans and animals. But can they assciate wrds and bjects mre generally?
T test this thery, Sah Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple wrd game used t investigate the same ability in human babies. The cats were shwn tw nine-secnd cartn clips (电影片段) with recrdings f their wners repeating a made-up wrd ver each image. The tw clips-a red sun labeled “param” and a blue unicrn with the wrd “keraru”-were repeated until the cats appeared t get bred and paid 50% less attentin t the screen.
After a shrt break, the image clips were repeated, but this time, half f the pairings were switched. The switched clips visibly affected the cats, with recrdings f “param” alngside the unicrn and “keraru” with the sun hlding their interest an average f 15% lnger. That the cats nticed this change and were clearly perplexed by it is gd evidence that they had frmed a link between the wrds and images, written in the study.
The experiment revealed that the cats were able t learn the cmbinatins frm just tw nine-secnd expsures - significantly faster than babies, wh required at least fur 20-secnd trials.
Hwever, these cmparisns shuld nt be verinterpreted. “Yu’re cmparing an adult animal with an immature animal frm a different species,” said Dr. Carl Siracusa, an animal behavirist at the University f Pennsylvania. “Mrever, a certain number f the cats have t be excluded, s there’s already a bias (偏见)-nt a fault f the research. Interacting with cats in the experiment is n easy task.” he added. Despite its limitatins, the study des shw that cats are capable f frming picture-wrd assciatins, the team wrte in the paper, althugh whether this is an inbrn ability r a prduct f dmesticatin remains a mystery.
      28. Why did Sah Takagi and her team carry ut the experiment?
      A. T test cats’ recgnitin f familiar names.
      B. T explre cats’ wrd-bject assciatin ability.
      C. T reveal cats’ secret f language understanding.
      D. T cmpare cats’ memry with that f human babies.
      29. What is presented in paragraph 2?
      A. Data cllectin.B. Result analysis.
      C. Practical examples.D. Experimental methds.
      30. What des the underlined wrd “perplexed” in paragraph 3 mean?
      A. Attracted.B. Surprised.
      C. Frightened.D. Cnfused.
      31. What is ne limitatin f the study, as mentined by Dr. Carl Siracusa?
      A. It’s difficult t engage cats.
      B. There’re nt enugh clips invlved.
      C. The cats tested are chsen randmly.
      D. Similarities between species are ignred.

There is a tendency amng hw-t enthusiasts t talk abut creativity as if it had fixed gals: things yu knw frm the start will turn ut t be nvels r symphnies (交响乐). Writers and musicians wh have suffered many failures knw this is an unlikely task. If they have t talk abut it, they use “artistic visin” and leave it at that. Hwever, experience tells me that creativity ften lies t ne side f a declared aim.
Sme yung writers are attracted by the idea that they can identify a mdel and knck ut a thriller. Well, maybe s, but nvels can take n cuntless shapes. The prblem becmes clear when yu start wrk creatively, because the need t believe in a fixed gal will hld yu back.
Scientists call this need the set effect. It finds that a general tendency exists t favur knwn methds in prblem-slving at the expense f alternatives. It is als a gd way f describing what can happen when an artistic apprach stps prducing results. A few years ag, when I finished Murmur, a nvel abut Alan Turing, I knew I wuldn’t be wrking that way again. Nevertheless, I tried a secnd histrical fictin. Failed. Meanwhile, I was playing the pian and cmpsing n the side, which wrked nicely.
S, the side-lng view is imprtant. The wrld f nature als ffers similar cases. Insects and sme birds rely less n an inbuilt map f the wrld t lcate fd than n what they see when they are mving. When a bee flies sideways, generating mtin parallax (运动视差), a flwer can be clearly lcated.
Perhaps, artistic visin is a part f physical seeing, where lking frm different angles is mre imprtant than staring straight at smething. Creative prjects and artistic visin cme frm ur inbrn respnse t the wrld arund us. And since the wrld is always changing, s is ur creativity — it’s never fixed r set in stne.
      32. Hw d writers and musicians view creativity in the first paragraph?
      A. It has uncertainties.B. It is hidden in failures.
      C. It cmes with a fixed gal.D. It is limited t specific fields.
      33. What made the authr fail in the creatin f the fictin?
      A. Influence f the set effect.B. Lacking histrical knwledge.
      C. Trying a new artistic apprach.D. Distractin frm playing the pian.
      34. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
      A. Explanatin f the set effect.B. Deep research int insect life.
      C. Supprting evidence in nature.D. Dubts n insects’ inbrn abilities.
      35. What des the authr suggest in the last paragraph?
      A. Staying flexible.B. Living t the fullest.
      C. Keeping explring.D. Hlding n t yur gal.

D Similarities between species are ignred.

第一段提到“But can they assciate wrds and bjects mre generally.(但它们能更普遍地将单词和物体联系起来吗?)”和第二段“T test this thery, Sah Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple wrd game used t investigate the same ability in human babies.(为了测试这一理论,Sah Takagi和她的团队让31只成年猫玩了一个简单的文字游戏,这个游戏用来调查人类婴儿是否具有同样的能力。)”
根据第二段“T test this thery, Sah Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple wrd game used t investigate the same ability in human babies. 【30题详解】

Writers and musicians wh have suffered many failures knw this is an unlikely task. 故选A项。

根据最后一段“Perhaps, artistic visin is a part f physical seeing, where lking frm different angles is mre imprtant than staring straight at smething. Creative prjects and artistic visin cme frm ur inbrn respnse t the wrld arund us. And since the wrld is always changing, s is ur creativity — it’s never fixed r set in stne. (或许,艺术愿景是物理视觉的一部分,从不同角度观察比直盯着某样东西更为重要。创意项目和艺术愿景源于我们对周围世界与生俱来的反应。既然世界总是在变化,我们的创造力也是如此——它从来不是固定不变的)”可知,作者认为创造力也应该是灵活的,需用从多角度出发,而不是固定不变的。由此可知,作者建议保持灵活。故选A项。

Did yu put n tw different shes? N, yu check yur shes — bth are the same.(你可能经历过有人盯着你看的情况,比如当你安静地坐在公共汽车上时,却发现对面的人在看你的脚。
根据上文“A new study by Hannah Sctt and clleagues frm the University f Lndn suggested that peple stare because faces, especially the eyes, prvide many useful nn-verbal clues abut a persn’s mental state.(伦敦大学的汉娜·斯科特及其同事的一项新研究表明,人们之所以盯着别人看,是因为脸,尤其是眼睛,提供了许多关于一个人精神状态的有用的非语言线索)”可知,上文提到人脸提供了一些精神状态的线索,且强调了眼睛包含信息更多,故C选项“眼睛包含与社交相关的信息”符合语境,故选C。

根据上文“The study shwed that peple tend t direct their gaze at the part f the bdy that prvides the mst infrmatin.(研究表明,人们倾向于把目光投向提供最多信息的身体部位)”以及后文“They get the audience t fcus n their faces while perfrming hand tricks. 【40题详解】
根据上文“Sctt’s study cncluded that peple are nt naturally biased t fcus n smene’s face. Instead, they are drawn t the bdy parts that prvide the mst relevant infrmatin.(斯科特的研究得出的结论是,人们不会自然地偏向于关注别人的脸。相反,它们会被吸引到提供最相关信息的身体部位)”可知,本句承接上文,具体说明被吸引到关注的身体部位是什么。故E选项“如果有人在说话,眼睛会吸引注意力”符合语境,故选E。
