In 2015, Calvin Echevarria was n tp f his game. He had tw jbs, bught a hused and was raising a 3-year-ld daughter with his wife. But suddenly, it felt like it was all taken away. He culd n lnger wrk as a FedEx driver because he develped diabetic retinpathy (视网膜病)and was ging blind.
Calvin at first wrked n develping independent living skills like walking with a stick. But he wanted t learn mre — like skills that wuld be useful-fr a jb. That’s when he fund Lighthuse Wrks in Orland, a cmpany that creates jbs fr the visually impaired (受损的) and blind.
“Seven ut f ten peple wh are visually impaired are nt in the wrkfrce,” said Kyle Jhnsn, president and CEO f Lighthuse Wrks. “And we knew sme blind pepled are highly educated. And they’re very capable peple, wh want t wrk and cntribute. S, we created Lighthuse Wrks t help them d that.”
Calvin wrks in the call center, where Lighthuse Wrks has cntracts with several clients, including the Flrida Department f Ecnmic Opprtunity. In his jb, Calvin uses a system called JAWS t“hear”the cmputer he uses. The system reads the cmputer screen t Calvir in ne ear as he listens t a custmer call in his ther ear.
He said what makes his call center jb fun is that the persn n the ther end f the phne desn’t even knw he’s blind. And he said wrking in a fully accessible ffice space, with ther visually impaired peple wh can relate t him, is an added benefit.
“It gives me a purpse. It makes me feel better because I can actually be prud f myself, saying, ‘I prvide fr my family,’” he said.

Ecnmists tend t be big fans f educatin. Alfred Marshall, writing in 1873, hped that educatin wuld help erase the “distinctin between wrking men and gentlemen”. Gary Becker f the University f Chicag reimagined educatin as an investment in “human capital” that wuld prduce returns in the market similar t ther assets.
But ecnmics can als be severely critical f schling. In The Scial Limits t Grwth, a bk published in 1976, Fred Hirsch pinted ut that educatin is ften “psitinal” in nature. What matters is nt nly hw much yu have, but whether yu have mre than the next persn. An unhappy cnsequence is that ne family’s expenses f schling raise the bar fr everyne else. Families are drawn, ften uncnsciusly, int educatinal arms races. They spend mney and time n after-schl tutring r extra-curricular activities in the expectatin that it will imprve their child’s psitin in the queue fr advancement. But they quickly discver that everyne else is ding the same, leaving them in the same psitin as befre. “If everyne stands n tipte, n ne sees better,” Hirsch nted.
These arms races are ften particularly intense in East Asia. The gvernment f Suth Krea has tried t ease the races. Fr example, it impsed a 10 p.m. curfew (宵禁) n cramming schls (补习学校). Inspectrs wuld lk fr schls with their lights n. Will these measures wrk? It is almst impssible t stp families hiring private tutrs t teach their children in their wn hmes.
The arms race is ntably less intense in parts f Eurpe. In Nrway and Sweden parents shw little demand fr tutring-the wealthy even less than thers, accrding t Steve Enrich f the University f Ptsdam. And vereducatin is less cmmn in Germany and ther cuntries that srt children early int academic r vcatinal (职业的) schls, with little mbility between the tw. Fr better r wrse, that remves large numbers f students frm the race fr mre academic hnrs.
Germany’s practice f placing children n different tracks at an early age als invites an interesting thught experiment. What if cllege entrance tests were held earlier in a pupil’s career? If these exams truly test the knwledge required fr university, they must be held just befre university starts. But if such tests mstly serve as filters, selecting better students frm wrse, they need nt be held s late. An earlier test wuld save families a year r tw f cstly cramming, shrtening “the bstacle jurney”, as Hirsch put it, withut much changing the results.
46.What viewpint is Gary Becker likely t agree with accrding t Paragraph 1?
A.Educatin generates financial returns in the market.
B.Educatin leads t the widening f class difference.
      C.Educatin plays a vital rle in a persn’s grwth.
D.Educatin prmtes prgress tward scial equality.
47.Why d we say that ne family’s expenses f schling raise the bar fr everyne else?
A.Because it imprves standards, making thers fllw suit.
B.Because it sets up barriers, making it harder fr thers t reach the same level.
C.Because it prvides a mdel, frcing thers t spend even mre.
D.Because it limits the range f educatinal resurces, frcing thers t give up.
48.Why des the authr mentin East Asia and parts f Eurpe?

Althugh it has been revealed in recent years that plants are capable f seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thught f as silent. But nw, fr the first time, they have been recrded making ultrasnic (超声的) cries when stressed, which researchers say culd pen up a new field f precisin agriculture where farmers listen fr water-starved crps.
Itzhak Khait and his clleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel fund that tmat and tbacc plants made cries at frequencies humans cannt hear when stressed by a lack f water r when their stem is cut.
Micrphnes placed 10 centimetres frm the plants picked up sunds in the ultrasnic range f 20 t 100 kilhertz, which the team says insects and sme mammals wuld be capable f hearing and respnding t frm as far as 5 metres away. A mth may decide against laying eggs n a plant that sunds water-stressed, the researchers suggest. Plants culd even hear that ther plants are shrt f water and react accrdingly, they speculate (推断).
On average, drught-stressed tmat plants made 35 sunds an hur, while tbacc plants made 11. When plant stems were cut, tmat plants made an average f 25 sunds in the fllwing hur, and tbacc plants 15. Unstressed plants prduced fewer than ne sund per hur, n average.
It is even pssible t distinguish between the sunds t knw what the stress is. The researchers trained a machine-learning mdel t recgnize between the plants’ sunds and the wind, rain and ther nises f the greenhuse, crrectly identifying in mst cases whether the stress was caused by dryness r a cut, based n the sund’s intensity and frequency. Water-hungry tbacc appears t make luder sunds than cut tbacc, fr example.
Enabling farmers t listen fr water-stressed plants culd “pen a new directin in the field f precisin agriculture”, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly imprtant as climate change expses mre areas t drught.
“The suggestin that the sunds that drught-stressed plants make culd be used in precisin agriculture seems feasible (可行的) if it is nt t cstly t set up the recrding in a field situatin,” says Anne Visscher at the ryal Btanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK.
She warns that the results can’t yet be bradened ut t ther stresses, such as salt r temperature, because these may nt lead t sunds. In additin, there have been n experiments t shw whether mths r any ther animal can hear and respnd t the sunds the plants make, s that idea remains based n guesses fr nw, she says.
51.The experiment by researchers at Tel Aviv University shws that ______.
A.tmat plants cry mre ften than tbacc when hurt
B.plant sunds can be heard by plants quite far away
C.humans can hear water-hungry plants crying
D.mths like laying eggs n stressed plant
52.Which ne f the fllwings may make the mst sunds accrding t the research?
      A.Water-hungry tbacc.B.Stem-cut tbacc.
      C.Drught-stressed tmat.D.Stem-cut tmat.
53.What is Anne Visscher’s attitude twards the finding f the experiment?
      A.DisappintedB.Cautius.
      C.Appreciative.D.Optimistic.
54.Taking advantage f the new research finding, farmers can ______.
      A.harvest crps in time
      B.reduce greenhuse effects
      C.diagnse plant cnditin faster
      D.detect and remve insects easily
55.Which f the fllwing wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A.Plants get stressed Just Like Us.
B.Sunds f Plants Detected Far Away.
C.Cries f plants break Farmers’ Hearts
D.Plants scream in the presence f stress

When I gt my first research prject t wrk as an undergraduate, I was s excited that I culd hardly think. My excitement, thugh, was sn cut shrt when my prfessr asked me t write a research paper n the prject. My bdy tensed. Writing was the last thing I wanted t d.
I hated writing in high schl. It felt like wndering in a chatic jungle, unsure where t reach next. My teachers wuld return my papers littered with red.
In cllege, I studied engineering. I tk cmfrt there, knwing bjective truth culd be fund. The prfessr assigned me a prject t imprve the efficiency f an inductr(感应器). I spent weeks setting up a test fr a new design. The results weren’t gd. I kept trying new designs, using the results t brainstrm ideas with researchers. Finally, we had ne. I was verjyed—until my prfessr tld me t write that research paper.
I knew I wuld need t spend time penning papers. In a panic, I asked a graduate student fr help. We defined a gal, and I carefully wrte an utline. But when I asked him fr feedback, I sn fund the paper cvered in red marks. The graduate student explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a ne-and dne thing. It requires revising yur wrk, ften several times. Suddenly it ccurred t me, “Hadn’t I dne the same thing when I was searching fr an efficient inductr design?” I kept refining the utline, eventually turning it int sentences and paragraphs guided by feedback frm thers. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. But with help. I was finally making my way thrugh the jungle.
Frm then n writing became ne f my favrite parts f research, and it still is tday. It’s a future I never culd have imagined during my early struggles with English classes. But I came arund. All it tk was sme trial and errr.
