Vivien He is a senir at a high schl in Rlling Hills Estates. Grwing up in Suthern Califrnia, where earthquakes ften happen, this 18-year-ld girl has spent lts f time hiding under her schl desk during earthquake drills. These grund tremrs (small earthquakes) are the wrld’s deadliest natural disasters. And they’re ften unpredictable.
Earthquake early warning systems d exist. One is the Shake Alert system n the U. S. West Cast. Earthquake mnitring statins in the Shake Alert netwrk detect grund shaking when a quake strikes. Thse statins then alert peple that the grund under them may sn start t shake. But it’s hard t predict hw much the grund will shake at any given place. And peple clsest t an earthquake’s surce are ut f luck. They’ll feel the shaking befre they can get an alert.
Therefre, Vivien built an at-hme earthquake sensr. Called the Qube, this device uses a mtin sensr called a gephne t feel tremrs that may mark the beginning f a bigger quake. Then, it can warn users by sunding the alarm r sending text alerts. T build it, Vivien bught a machine and watched YuTube vides t learn hw t use it. Then she went t wrk in a spare bathrm.
During nine mnths f testing, Vivien’s Qube detected all earthquakes ver magnitude 3 arund Ls Angeles. The mtin data captured by her Qube als matched thse frm a nearby seismmeter (地震仪) in the Suthern Califrnia Seismic Netwrk.
Vivien is nw building up a netwrk f Qubes arund Ls Angeles. “I have eight devices in different hmes,” she says. A widespread Qube netwrk culd serve as a rle similar t that f ShakeAlert seismic statins. When ne Qube starts t shake, it culd alert users acrss twn t an ncming quake. But unlike earthquake mnitring statins, Qubes are tiny and inexpensive. Abut the size f a Rubik’s cube, ne Qube csts less than $100 t make. S, many mre f them culd be installed arund a city.
      4. What can we learn abut Vivien He when she was little?
      A. She used t like playing hide and seek in schl.
      B. She was ften at risk f experiencing an earthquake.

      B. T cmpare ShakeAlert with Vivien’s Qube in terms f accuracy.
      C. T highlight the technlgical advancements in earthquake detectin.
      D. T shw the drawback f existing earthquake early warning systems.
      6. What’s the main functin f Vivien He’s device?
      A. Mnitring tremrs and sending alarms.
      B. Cllecting data abut minr earthquakes.
      C. Predicting the center f an earthquake.
      D. Assessing the sizes f earthquakes.
      7. What’s implied abut the netwrk f Qubes?
      A. It’s very challenging t build it.
      B. It has limitatins in large cities.

Tw thusand years ag, lemurs-an animal like a mnkey, and giant “elephant birds” wandered thrugh Madagascar. A thusand years later, they were nearly gne. Nw, a new study has figured ut the mystery f their annihilatin.
The new study traced back t 2007 when Jean-Aimé Raktarisa and a grup f researchers created the Madagascar Genetic and Ethnlinguistic prject t study the lng-debated questin f the ancestry f the Malagasy, the island’s majr native ethnic grup. Thugh Madagascar is lcated abut 425 kilmeters ff the east cast f Africa, the Malagasy language is similar t the Austrnesian languages spken 7,000 kilmeters acrss the Indian Ocean. There’s lng been a questin abut when and hw peple came t Madagascar, and hw they influenced the large-bdied animals, including giant lemurs, elephant birds and turtles.
Between 2007 and 2014 the team traveled t 257 villages arund the island. They cllected saliva (唾液) samples and musical, linguistic, and ther scial science data. In the new study, the scientists genetically analyzed the saliva and used a cmputer prgram t mdel Malagasy ancestry and estimate hw it changed ver generatins.
They fund the mdern Malagasy ppulatin is descended frm a small ancestral Asian ppulatin. By 1,000 years ag, this small grup had made it t the island. Other studies have fund that at the same time, the ppulatin f Madagascar explded and that the lifestyle f the peple changed as well. Befre, humans had lived alngside animals and hunted in small grups. Then, they built large settlements, planted rice, and grazed cattle in the field, archaelgical evidence shws. The researchers believe the ppulatin grwth and these changes, paired with a htter and drier climate, likely led t the disappearance f the giant creatures. The researchers agree the timing lines up, give r take 100-years, but they believe the changing climate played less f a rle.
Understanding humans’ rle in the Madagascar extinctin is urgent tday, especially as mdern giants such as elephants and rhincerses are threatened. We need t knw what causes majr changes, s we can save urselves frm a ptentially terrible future.
      8. What des the underlined wrd “annihilatin” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
      A. Extinctin.B. Cnservatin.
      C. Expansin.D. Reservatin.
      9. Why did Jean-Aimé Raktarisa start a prject in 2007?

In the study, 79 prereading children with family histries f dyslexia tk several language tests, including listening fr differences in made-up wrds — a task that can be challenging fr dyslexic peple. The kids were then split int fur grups. One played Space Invaders Extreme 2, a secnd played a nn-actin vide game, a third attended speech therapy, and a furth received n interventin. Gamers played fur times a week fr 45 minutes each ver a mnth and a half, and thse in speech therapy attended 45-minute sessins twice weekly ver abut fur mnths.
By the end f the trial mre than 80 percent f the Space Invaders players were significantly better at the wrd-identificatin task than befre, and they shwed greater imprvements than any f the ther three grups. The researchers aren’t sure why scres n the ther language tests did nt imprve ntably — but they say that this finding culd be valuable. “If we can target these small cgnitive functins befre children are lder and lse sme brain plasticity, then perhaps we can treat aspects f dyslexia befre they’ve fully frmed,” says Simne Gri, c-authr f the study.
Dyslexia ften ges untreated in Italy’s verburdened public health and schl systems, says Marilu Tempini, a behaviral neurlgist at the University f Califrnia. She hpes t see larger future studies cnducted in ther languages as well. “Eyes are an extensin f the brain,” she says, “s when we play vide games, it’s directly cnnected t ur cgnitive functin-and there is s much research ptential there.”
