Her family had just migrated t Australia frm Japan. Unable t speak a wrd f English, we culd nly cmmunicate with each ther thrugh bdy language, but this did nt stp us frm becming clse friends. My mm has a clear memry f ne car trip when Natsumi and I were sitting in the backseat, giggling and whispering t each ther in English. It was the first time I felt cnfident enugh t speak the few wrds I had learned thrughut the year.
Unfrtunately, at the end f that year, Natsumi’s family mved t Queensland and mine t New Suth Wales. Unintentinally, we lst tuch.
After my graduatin frm university, I went int training as an EAL/D teacher, teaching English t newly arrived secndary students. Between 2014 and 2018, many f my students were Japanese, which reminded me f Natsumi. I had lng been searching fr her, but in vain.
On a visit t Japan in 2018, I picked up the trail again. Having spent a lng night nline, I came acrss smene named Natsumi.
Taking a final gamble, I sent her a message. The next day, there was a reply: “Oh my gd! Gabi? Gabi frm Perth?”
It turned ut that Natsumi was still living in Queensland, but she wuld be visiting Sydney the week after I returned frm Japan. We agreed n a date and met up fr dinner. Seeing her again fr the first time — mre than 25 years since ur last meeting — was incredible. Hwever, there was ne huge difference. This time, we were nt nly able t cmmunicate with ne anther in English, but fluently s.

La Zi nce said, “Care abut what ther peple think and yu will always be their prisner.” Peple-pleasing, r seeking self-wrth, thrugh thers’ apprval, is unprductive and an exhausting way t g thrugh life. Why d we allw what thers think f us t have s much pwer ver hw we feel abut urselves? If it’s true that yu can’t please all peple all f the time, wuldn’t it make sense t stp trying?
Unfrtunately, sense ften isn’t driving ur behavir. Fr scial beings wh desire lve and belnging wanting t be liked, and caring abut the effect we have n thers, is healthy and allws us t make cnnectins. Hwever, where we get int truble is when ur self-wrth is dependent upn whether we win smene’s apprval r nt.
This need t be liked can be traced back t when we were children and were cmpletely dependent n thers t take care f us: Small children are nt just learning hw t walk and cmmunicate, they are als trying t learn hw the wrld wrks. We learn abut wh we are and what is expected f us based n interactins with thers, s, t a fur-year-ld, if Mmmy r Daddy desn’t like him r her, there is the danger that they will abandn them. We need t understand that when we desperately want smene t apprve f us, it’s being driven by that little kid part f us that is still terrified f abandnment.
As yu becme mre capable f prviding yurself with the apprval yu seek, yur need fr external validatin (认同) will start t disappear, leaving yu strnger, mre cnfident, and yes, happier in yur life. Imaging hw much time we lse every time we restrict ur true selves in an effrt t be liked.
If we base ur wrth n the pinins f thers, we cheat urselves f the pwer t shape ur experiences and embrace life nt nly fr thers but als fr urselves because ultimately, there is n difference. S embrace the cliche (老话) and lve yurself as it’s highly dubtful that yu’ll regret it.
46.What can we cnclude frm La Zi’s qutatin?
A.We shuld see thrugh thers’ attempt t make a prisner f us
B.We can never be truly free if taking t heart thers’ pinin f us.
C.We can never really please thers even if we try as hard as we can.
D.We shuld care abut thers’ view as much as they care abut ur wn.
47.What will happen if we base ur self-wrth n ther peple’s apprval?
A.Our desire t be lved will be fulfilled.
B.Our life will be unfruitful and exhausting.
C.Our identity as scial beings will be affected.
D.Our sense f self will be sharpened and enhanced.
48.What may accunt fr ur need t be liked r apprved f?
A.Our desperate lnging fr interactins with thers.
B.Our understanding f the wrkings f the wrld.
C.Our knwledge abut the pain f abandnment.
D.Our early childhd fear f being deserted.
49.What can we d when we becme better able t prvide urselves with the desired apprval?
A.Enjy a happier life.B.Exercise self-restrictin.
