Fish ften travel in schls. Hw and why each fish des what it des is what makes their schling s puzzling t scientists. Nw scientists think they have a clue as t why schling is s cmmn. It saves the fish energy—lts f energy.
A new study has cmpared the energy a fish uses as it swims. And mving in a schl reduced the energy a fish used by mre than half cmpared t when it swam alne, it fund. “The whle idea f measuring what it csts animals t mve is an imprtant ne,” says Gerge Lauder, a fish bilgist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and an authr f the new study. Many physilgists have been lking int this fr years, he ntes. “This is the first paper, I think, that’s really measured that cmprehensively.”
Lauder and Zhang, als at Harvard, wrked with giant dani, small fish that lve t swim. Smetimes the team put eight at a time int a water tank shaped a bit like a racetrack. Other times, they just put in a single fish. The dani didn’t lp (绕圈) arund the tank like race cars. Instead, they swam in ne spt, like a runner n a treadmill (跑步机), as a mtr pushed the tank’s water arund, creating a current. As the fish swam, a special device called a respirmeter (呼吸器) measured hw much xygen they used. Oxygen helps t fuel muscles. Fr example, peple wh sprint (短跑) use a lt f xygen. Afterward, they ften need a few minutes t recver and catch their breath. Here, the researchers used xygen as a gauge (测量标准) f hw much energy the fish used t swim in place.
Researchers filmed giant dani in an experimental flw tank t study their mvements and energy use. T make them swim fast—like a sprinter—the researchers increased the speed f the circulating water current. When they slwed the water, the fish slwed t. Schling fish used less xygen than when they swam alne. And, they tk less time t recver frm a sprint. In ther wrds, they had an easier time “catching their breath” after schling.
By schling, fish can save their energy fr ther imprtant things, says Frank Fish. He wrks at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, where he studies the dynamics f mtin in animals. Fr instance, if fish are yung, they can put that energy int grwth. As adults, they can use it t reprduce r t avid predatrs (捕食者).
