Visibility f, and investment in, generative AI – prgrams such as ChatGPT, Midjurney, and ther large language mdel (LLM) based technlgies – has explded in the past cuple f years, bringing with it a whle hst f benefits and drawbacks. But amngst all the existential dread and alarming levels f misinfrmatin, there’s ne far mre practical cncern that has s far gne unnticed: what are we ging t d with all the e-waste we’re creating?
“The e-waste generated by generative AI, particularly large language mdels, culd ttal as much as 5 millin tns by the end f the decade – arund 2,000 times the amunt prduced in 2023,” Asaf Tzachr, a sustainability and climate researcher at Reichman University in Israel, tld DW recently. E-waste is already a big prblem – as the United Natins pints ut, “the 62 millin tns f e-waste generated in 2022 wuld fill 1.55 millin 40-tnne trucks, rughly enugh trucks t frm a bumper-t-bumper line encircling the equatr.”
And here’s the thing: tackling the prblem is pretty much a win-win, since nt nly will it stp millins f peple, including children, dying frm expsure t harmful chemicals and pllutin – but e-waste is als famusly full f super-valuable minerals and resurces. “There's mre gld and silver in a tnne f iPhnes than a tnne f re frm a gld r silver mine,” Lisa McLean, chief executive fficer f research and advcacy grup Circular Australia, tld ABC.
“The range f 16-86 percent reductin reflects the immense ptential f these strategies, especially if supprted by plicies, and when widely implemented acrss industries and regins,” said Saurabh Gupta, funder f India-based sustainability rganizatin Earth5R.
S, what’s the slutin? Well, there’s n silver bullet, but Tzachr highlighted a few strategies t help minimize the future attack f e-waste. First, we shuld aim t prlng the use f existing hardware – basically, use things fr lnger, rather than thrwing them ut as sn as the next shiny thing catches ur eye. Secnd, we shuld aim t re-use devices and cmpnents – which includes designing hardware s as t make this easier.
What has turned int a mre practical issue abut AI?
      A. The decrease in its investment.
      B.The management f e-waste.
      C. The spread f misinfrmatin.
      D. The imprvement f its visibility.
Hw much e-waste was generated by generative AI in 2023 accrding t the text?
      Abut 2,500 tns.
      B. Abut 5 millin tns.
      C. 62 millin tns mre r less.
      Apprximately 2.5 millin tns.
What can we learn abut e-waste frm Lisa McLean?
E - waste is mre harmful than beneficial.
E - waste can be replaced by valuable minerals.
E-waste is a significant surce f gld and silver.
E-waste is verlked in the recycling industry.
      31. What can peple d t minimize e-waste accrding t Tzachr?
      Replacing the imprtant cmpnents
Getting rid f ld hardware immediately.
      Imprving the sustainability f hardware.
Updating new types f hardware frequently.

39.根据上文“Mindful shpping is abut being fully aware f yur thughts and feelings befre purchasing a new item.(有意识购物是指在购买新物品之前充分意识到自己的想法和感受)”可知,上文提到了有意识购物的概念,推测本句承接上文,说明有意识购物的内在要求,E选项中It指代上文Mindful shpping。
40.根据本段内容“Despite what marketers want yu t believe, it’s gd t remind yurself that material pssessins dn’t define yur self-wrth. Ensure yu buy items because yu really need r want them, and nt just t impress yur scial circle.(不管营销人员想让你相信什么,提醒自己物质财富并不能定义你的自我价值是件好事。

故填it。
故填what。
故填by/thrugh。
故填the/this。
本句是in which引导的定语从句,redirect作从句谓语,和主语an ppnent’s energy and mves之间是被动关系,用被动语态,根据前文的says和calls可知,用一般现在时。故填are redirected。
故填is。
