Many kids wh grw up in big cities have lts f pprtunities t experience science hands-n. There are zs, museums and schl field trips. But thse cnditins are smetimes ut f reach fr lwer-incme children. And in sme rural areas, thse pprtunities simply dn’t exist at all.
Dan Sudran has taken it upn himself t help clse the gap. Grwing up a gd, studius kid in Kansas, he fllwed the rules and went t cllege, then law schl. But he was cnfused. “I culdn’t really figure ut what I was r what I was suppsed t be,” Sudran says. Sudran finally had his answer in his late 30s. He started taking apart electrnics and cllecting materials frm the beach. In schl, science had held n interest fr him at all. But ut in the real wrld, it turned ut t be the thing he’d been missing all alng. “My life becmes better since I gt int science,” Sudran says.
And that inspired him. What if he culd give children the same experience he’d waited 30 years t discver? S Sudran gt a cllege t dnate sme space and equipment. Pretty sn, a small nnprfit prject called the Cmmunity Science Wrkshp Netwrk was brn.
Tday there are six wrkshps, almst all in lw-incme neighbrhds arund Califrnia. One f the wrkshps is filled with stuff: micrscpes, pwer tls, even a turtle and a snake. There’s n curriculum, nthing t memrize but tls t play and experiment with. Eighth-grader Jse Vega is wrking hard at building a rbt while Esteban Espinza, 6, is getting tadples (蝌蚪) ut f a tank t examine them under a micrscpe. One grup f kids are spreading ut n the flr, trying t figure ut hw t build a ht air balln.
Sudran’s dream, he says, is t take this mdel f quick hands-n science all ver the wrld. Next up, Sudran hpes, will be the small Suthern Califrnia desert twn f Cachella.

Visibility f, and investment in, generative AI – prgrams such as ChatGPT, Midjurney, and ther large language mdel (LLM) based technlgies – has explded in the past cuple f years, bringing with it a whle hst f benefits and drawbacks. But amngst all the existential dread and alarming levels f misinfrmatin, there’s ne far mre practical cncern that has s far gne unnticed: what are we ging t d with all the e-waste we’re creating?
“The e-waste generated by generative AI, particularly large language mdels, culd ttal as much as 5 millin tns by the end f the decade – arund 2,000 times the amunt prduced in 2023,” Asaf Tzachr, a sustainability and climate researcher at Reichman University in Israel, tld DW recently. E-waste is already a big prblem – as the United Natins pints ut, “the 62 millin tns f e-waste generated in 2022 wuld fill 1.55 millin 40-tnne trucks, rughly enugh trucks t frm a bumper-t-bumper line encircling the equatr.”
And here’s the thing: tackling the prblem is pretty much a win-win, since nt nly will it stp millins f peple, including children, dying frm expsure t harmful chemicals and pllutin – but e-waste is als famusly full f super-valuable minerals and resurces. “There's mre gld and silver in a tnne f iPhnes than a tnne f re frm a gld r silver mine,” Lisa McLean, chief executive fficer f research and advcacy grup Circular Australia, tld ABC.
“The range f 16-86 percent reductin reflects the immense ptential f these strategies, especially if supprted by plicies, and when widely implemented acrss industries and regins,” said Saurabh Gupta, funder f India-based sustainability rganizatin Earth5R.
S, what’s the slutin? Well, there’s n silver bullet, but Tzachr highlighted a few strategies t help minimize the future attack f e-waste. First, we shuld aim t prlng the use f existing hardware – basically, use things fr lnger, rather than thrwing them ut as sn as the next shiny thing catches ur eye. Secnd, we shuld aim t re-use devices and cmpnents – which includes designing hardware s as t make this easier.
What has turned int a mre practical issue abut AI?
A. The decrease in its investment.
B.The management f e-waste.
C. The spread f misinfrmatin.
D. The imprvement f its visibility.
Hw much e-waste was generated by generative AI in 2023 accrding t the text?
Abut 2,500 tns.
B. Abut 5 millin tns.
C. 62 millin tns mre r less.
Apprximately 2.5 millin tns.
What can we learn abut e-waste frm Lisa McLean?
E - waste is mre harmful than beneficial.
E - waste can be replaced by valuable minerals.
E-waste is a significant surce f gld and silver.
E-waste is verlked in the recycling industry.
31. What can peple d t minimize e-waste accrding t Tzachr?
Replacing the imprtant cmpnents
Getting rid f ld hardware immediately.
Imprving the sustainability f hardware.
Updating new types f hardware frequently.

Lenard da Vinci’s wrld-famus painting, the Mna Lisa, inspired the Mna Lisa effect: the subject f an image is always lking directly at yu, n matter where yu stand.
But accrding t research by scientists frm Germany’s Bielefeld University, published in the jurnal i-Perceptin, there’s ne painting that definitively desn’t demnstrate the Mna Lisa effect: the Mna Lisa herself.
Hrstmann and his assistants asked 24 participants t assess the stare f the Mna Lisa. Instead f simply asking each participant whether they felt the Mna Lisa was lking at them; they displayed the painting n a cmputer screen, and asked the participants t measure the directin f the stare n a tw-meter ruler placed hrizntally (水平地) between them and the screen.
The distance between the participants and the cmputer screen remained the same, at 66 cm, but the ruler was mved bth clser t and further away frm the screen thrughut the trial. The researchers als altered the size and visible area f the Mna Lisa t determine whether the perceptin f her stare was influenced by particular elements f her face. The participants were asked t respnd t the painting at varius degrees f zm (焦距), between 30% and 70%, and saw crps that nly included her eyes and nse, as well as thers that shwed her whle head. T avid the participants settling n the same measurement n the ruler every time, the participants were shwed the Mna Lisa mved 3.4 cm t the left and right.
Previus research cited in the study indicates the range f the Mna Lisa effect: the subject f an image will appear t be lking at its viewer if its stare is within 5 degrees t the left r right. The stare f the “Mna Lisa”, hwever, was measured by the study participants at an average angle f 15.4 degrees t the right — in shrt, the Mna Lisa is definitely nt lking at her audience.
“There is n dubt abut the existence f the Mna Lisa effect,” Hrstmann cncluded. “It just des nt ccur with Mna Lisa herself.”
32.What’s the purpse f paragraph 1?
A.T present the tpic f the text.B.T argue ver a cnclusin.

S, what steps can yu take t break this endless cycle f cnsumptin?
Recgnize it befre it happens.
37 Dn’t let every new item start an endless spiral f purchases. Each time yu buy smething new, remind yurself that the ther items yu’re feeling tempted (被引诱的) t replace were perfectly fine until nw — and prbably still are.
Buy new items that fit what yu already have.
When yu d need t buy smething new, finding pieces that fit what yu already wn will reduce the temptatin t replace perfectly gd things. Fr example, add a new piece f furniture that matches yur existing rm decr (装饰风格). Otherwise, yu’ll need t buy everything new. 38
Practise mindful shpping.
Mindful shpping is abut being fully aware f yur thughts and feelings befre purchasing a new item. 39 That is, befre buying anything, stp and ask yurself a few mindful shpping questins. Ninety-nine times ut f a hundred, yu’ll decide yu dn’t really need the item.
40
Despite what marketers want yu t believe, it’s gd t remind yurself that material pssessins dn’t define yur self-wrth. Ensure yu buy items because yu really need r want them, and nt just t impress yur scial circle.
A.Let g f wanting things.
B.Remember that things are just things.
C.Hw can we reduce the chances f ut-f-cntrl spending?
D.D yu see hw this pattern can lead t unnecessary spending?
E.It requires yu t questin if yu truly need smething.
F.This is because the new piece mismatches yur existing style.
G.The first step t breaking the cycle is t be aware f the Didert Effect and prevent it.

“Yu cannt fight water,” Mr. Yu said. “Yu have t adapt t it.” He wants t reduce the destructive frce f fldwaters 59 slwing them and giving them rm t spread ut. Mr. Yu calls 60 cncept “spnge city (海绵城市)” and says it’s like ding tai chi with water, a reference t the Chinese martial art in which an ppnent’s energy and mves 61 (redirect), nt resisted.
The prblem with cncrete-based slutins 62 (be) that they are expensive, lack 63 (flexible) and require cnstant maintenance. Spnge cities create new parks, restre wetlands and set up rain gardens and pavements. Mr. Yu’s prpsal is this: Create areas with prus (多孔的) earth where lcal plants can grw well with little maintenance. If it rains, the earth and plants will absrb the water, preventing sme r even all f it frm flding nearby areas. Any extra water nt 64 (absrb) by the vegetatin will at least be slwed, unlike cncrete, which can instead 65 (dangerus) speed up water flw.

When we arrived in Turnus, Gabriel and I parked ur bikes near the wharf and walked t the twn square, starving after a 33-kilmeter ride. We made it within ne and a half hurs, which is really smething! We planned t get lunch and then bike back t Macn, a city n the Sane River where I was staying with Gabriel’s family fr the summer.
It was market day, bustling with lcals buying grceries and turists hunting fr suvenirs. We bught a lng, thin laf f bread called a baguette and sme Brie, a sft cheese I’m bsessed with. It tastes awesme with the crispy crust f the baguette. While eating, I nticed a girl in a USA Basketball T-shirt smiling at us.
Basketball is ppular in France t. Yu can even watch NBA games n TV. The girl stpped t buy ckies with smene that I guessed was her mm because they lked s much alike. We later saw her and her mm by the river, enjying pastries(糕点) n a bench near a riverbat named Vyageur, which had dcked earlier. Then they barded the bat. As it was preparing t leave, I sptted a clrful shpping bag n the bench. The girl had left it! Gabriel and I called ut t her in French and English, waving the bag. When the girl nticed us, she was surprised but disappinted as the bat began t leave. Gabriel suggested thrwing it t her, but I feared it wuld fall int the river. We had t find anther way !
Running alngside the bat, Gabriel learned frm a sailr that the next stp was Macn-ur destinatin as well. It wuld take the bat just under tw hurs at a speed f 12 knts. Gabriel searched n the phne abut the speed. “That’s 22 kilmeters-r 14 miles-per hur,” he said. “D yu think we can keep up?” I asked. With a laugh, he replied, “We’re abut t find ut!”
