The last time I happened t find myself in Ls Angeles, I did what every first-time visitr must d: I went t the wrld’s mst fashinable grcery stre nly t stare at it in wnder. Thse f yu familiar with Erewhn will already knw exactly what I’m talking abut. Fr thse wh dn’t: Erewhn is a high-end celebrity-belved supermarket that sells such things as $19 smthies (奶昔). Tik Tkers rutinely fld int the stre t spend small frtunes n fancy snacks and film themselves unpacking their “hauls (战利品)”.
Erewhn is als, yu might have nticed, a literary reference. The brand is named after a 19th-century satirical (讽刺的) ) nvel by Samuel Butler abut a sciety full f beautiful peple, where crime is treated tlerantly and cnsidered a “sickness”, but pverty and illness are criminalised. In Erewhn, peple g t great lengths t appear healthy.
What wuld Butler have made f an ver-fancy supermarket filled with influencers desperate t see and be seen, being named after his bk? I culdn’t tell yu: I wandered the crridrs f Erewhn lking fr smething fascinating but nly came ut with a small piece f bread.
I can tell yu this, thugh: Americans, particularly Gen Z, seem t have an unfillable appetite fr treating themselves t upmarket snacks. “TikTk creatrs have brught Little Treat Culture int fashin, and we’re n bard,” Whle Fds writes in its rundup f 2024 fd trends. Little Treat Culture is exactly what it sunds like: rewarding yurself with lvely little things, such as an extremely Instagrammable $19 smthie, just fr existing in these difficult times.
While these little luxuries aren’t always fd-related, grceries have a cmmn categry fr a relatively affrdable luxury. And nt just in the US: recent research shws that cnsumers are a lt mre likely t say their “recent splurge (挥霍) purchase” was fd r drink rather than persnal care. A survey similarly fund grceries t be the “new biggest splurge categry”. Snack-makers are paying clse attentin and cashing in by designing mre upmarket, individually packaged luxuries.
      4. What d we knw abut Erewhn?
      A. Its main cnsumers are newcmers.B. It gives special rights t Tik Tkers.
      C. Its pricing fr gds is relatively high.D. It secures prmtins frm celebrities.
      5. Hw did the authr feel after shpping in Erewhn?
      A. He was quite cnfused.B. He was smewhat shcked.
      C. He was a bit disappinted.D. He was extremely wrn ut.
      6. What trend des Little Treat Culture represent?
      A. A sign f TikTk bm.B. A fcus n healthy fd.
      C. A desire fr expensive meals.D. A methd f rewarding neself.
      7. What des the last paragraph suggest?
      A. Peple are spending less n affrdable luxury gds.
      B. Cnsumers prefer persnal care items t fd in life.
      C. Luxury brands are planning t cnduct a similar survey.
      D. Mre well-packaged luxurius snacks will enter the market.
      C
Hearing live music may be mre stirring than listening t a recrding f the same tune because it causes greater activity in the part f the brain linked t prcessing emtins.
Sascha Fruhhlz at the University f Zurich in Switzerland and his clleagues cmpsed 12 pieces f music, each lasting 30 secnds. Half were written with the aim f cnveying negative emtins, such sadness and anger. These were slwer and less harmnius than the remaining sngs, written t express psitive emtins.
They then recruited (招募) 27 peple, wh weren’t musically trained, t listen t these 12 pieces twice — nce perfrmed by a live pianist, which the participants heard thrugh a speaker, and nce as a recrding. The rder they heard them was randmly assigned, with 30 secnds f silence in between. The participants had little idea when they were hearing a recrding r live music. While listening t the music, they lay in an MRI (核磁共振成像) scanner s the team culd mnitr their brain activity. The pianist adapted the vlume and speed f the live piece accrding t their activity. But the recrded music was nt adjusted.
The researchers fund that live perfrmances f bth the negative and psitive pieces cnsistently led t increased brain activity in the left amygdala (杏仁体) — the regin f the brain that is strngly linked t assigning sensry stimuli, such as sunds, t certain emtins. Meanwhile, the recrded tunes sparked much less activity in the left amygdala. This matched up with hw emtive the participants rated each piece f music after the experiment. The findings shw that live music intensifies ur emtinal respnse, prbably due t its free-flwing, dynamic nature, says Fruhhlz.
The researchers hpe t repeat the experiment with a larger audience in a cncert setting. “If yu g t a live cncert, yu’re nt alne,” says Fruhhlz. “This intensified emtinal experience is als a scial experience.”
      8. What des the underlined wrd “stirring” mean in paragraph 1?
      A. Prper.B. Special.C. Calm.D. Exciting.
      9. What d we knw abut 12 pieces f music?
      A. They lasted half a minute in ttal.B. Fruhhlz recrded them in his wn right.
      C. Nt all f them cnveyed psitive emtins.D. Thse cnveying sad emtins were faster.
      10. What can be inferred frm the experiment?
      A. The participants heard the 12 pieces nn-stp.B. The recruited peple were divided int 2 grups.
      C. The team accrdingly adjusted the music pieces.D. The subjects’ brain activities in it were bserved.
11 What is the main idea f the last but ne paragraph?
      A. The imprtance f the left amygdala.B. The final findings f the research.
      C. The fllwing research directins.D. The underlying lgic f the brain
      D
China says its maglev hyperlp train (磁悬浮超级高铁列车) has brken the wrld speed recrd in a test run, reaching a surprising 623 km/h. Eventually, its makers want t build a train mre than three times as fast as ne that will break the sund barrier and run faster than airplanes.
The maglev train, named the T-Flight, was built by the state-wned China Aerspace Science and Industry Crpratin (CASIC), New Atlas reprted. Hyperlp trains wrk by pushing MLP (磁悬浮吊舱) thrugh tunnels with very little air resistance. The previus recrd hlder fr the fastest maglev train is the L0 Series SCMaglev in Japan, accrding t JRPass, which can hit a tp speed f 603 km/h.
T test the new train, CASIC built a track rughly 2 kilmeters lng in a lw-pressure vacuum (真空) tube. T reach such high speeds, the trains must encunter almst n frictin (摩擦). S CASIC smthed the test track t a flatness with a 0.3 millimeters tlerance, meaning there is a 0.01-inch difference between the lwest and highest pint f the flat surface. The 20-ft-wide tunnel als has a gemetric size errr f less than 2 mm, meaning the margin f errr (误差幅度) against a perfect shape. The entire pipeline can return t nrmal pressure in five minutes, which shws its surprisingly-restred ability.
In the T-Flight’s secnd phase f testing, CASIC aims t extend the track t 60 km and allw the train t reach 1,000 km/h.
At this theretical tp speed, the maglev train wuld be even faster than a passenger jet, which travels at an average range between 925 km/h and 966 km/h, accrding t Simple Flying. The cmpany’s ambitins dn’t stp there, hwever, with plans fr a cnnectin between Wuhan and Beijing that can reach up t 2,000 km/h, accrding t a vide frm 2018.
Hyperlp systems can mve vehicles at speeds much faster than cnventinal trains — mst f which are restricted t 95 km/h in the U. S. Eln Musk first prpsed a hyperlp system fr the U. S. in 2013, but mre than a decade later, Musk’s visin has yet t see the light f day. As ne f the biggest cmpanies in the industry, Virgin shut dwn its wn hyperlp cmpany, which mst recently went by the name Virgin Hyperlp in 2023.
      12. What d we knw abut hyperlp trains frm the first tw paragraphs?
      A. China’s T-Flight utpaces airplanes.B. T-Flight utspeeds SCMaglev by 20 km/h.

      C. A perfectly-shaped tunnel.D. A quickly-recvered pipeline.

      A. Ambitius and reliable.B. Cnventinal and practical.
      C. State-wned and cnservative.D. Advanced and internatinal.
      15. What is the best title f the passage?

What wuld Butler have made f an ver-fancy supermarket, filled with influencers desperate t see and be seen, being named after his bk?
      【答案】4. C 5. C 6. D 7. D
      【解析】

      【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Little Treat Culture is exactly what it sunds like: rewarding yurself with lvely little things, such as an extremely Instagrammable $19 smthie, just fr existing in these difficult times.( Little Treat Culture顾名思义就是:用可爱的小东西奖励自己,比如一杯19美元的奶昔,非常适合在instagram上发布,只是为了在这些困难时期生存)”可知,Little Treat Culture就是奖励自己一些可爱的小东西,故代表的是一个自我奖励的方法,故选D。
      【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“And nt just in the US: recent research shws that cnsumers are a lt mre likely t say their ‘recent splurge (挥霍) purchase’ was fd r drink rather than persnal care. A survey similarly fund grceries t be the ‘new biggest splurge categry’. Snack-makers are paying clse attentin and cashing in by designing mre upmarket, individually packaged luxuries.(而且不仅仅是在美国:最近的研究表明,消费者更有可能说他们‘最近大手笔购买’的是食品或饮料,而不是个人护理。一项类似的调查发现,食品杂货是‘新的最大挥霍类别’。零食制造商正密切关注这一问题,并通过设计更高档、独立包装的奢侈品大赚一笔)”可知,消费者更倾向于在食品上挥霍,且零食制造商正设计“更高端、独立包装的奢侈品”,暗示更多此类商品将进入市场,故选D。

      11. What is the main idea f the last but ne paragraph?
      A. The imprtance f the left amygdala.B. The final findings f the research.
      C. The fllwing research directins.D. The underlying lgic f the brain
      【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. B
根据第二段“Sascha Fruhhlz at the University f Zurich in Switzerland and his clleagues cmpsed 12 pieces f music, each lasting 30 secnds. Half were written with the aim f cnveying negative emtins, such sadness and anger. These were slwer and less harmnius than the remaining sngs, written t express psitive emtins.(瑞士苏黎世大学的Sascha Fruhhlz和他的同事们创作了12首乐曲,每首乐曲持续30秒。其中一半是为了表达消极情绪而写的,比如悲伤和愤怒。这些歌曲比其余的歌曲更慢,更不和谐,这些歌曲是为了表达积极的情绪而写的)”可知,这12首乐曲一半是表达消极情绪,其余的是表达积极情绪,并非所有的都表达积极的情绪。故选C。
      【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中国“While listening t the music, they lay in an MRI (核磁共振成像) scanner s the team culd mnitr their brain activity. The pianist adapted the vlume and speed f the live piece accrding t their activity.(在听音乐的同时,他们躺在核磁共振扫描仪中,这样研究小组就可以监测他们的大脑活动。钢琴家根据他们的活动调整了现场演奏曲目的音量和速度)”可知,研究小组监测实验对象的大脑活动,钢琴家根据他们的活动调整了现场演奏曲目的音量和速度,由此推知在实验中实验对象的大脑活动被观察,故选D。
      【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段内容,尤其是首句中“The researchers fund that…(研究人员发现……)”和末句“The findings shw that live music intensifies ur emtinal respnse, prbably due t its free-flwing, dynamic nature, says Fruhhlz.(研究结果表明,现场音乐会增强我们的情绪反应,这可能是由于其自由流动、动态的性质,Fruhhlz说)”可知,本段主要讲研究结果,故选B。
      C. The first hyperlp train is made in Japan.D. They can merely travel withut air frictin.
      13. What is prepared fr testing the T-Flight?
      A. A free-pressure tube.B. An abslute flat track.
      C. A perfectly-shaped tunnel.D. A quickly-recvered pipeline.
      14. Which can be used t describe China Aerspace Science and Industry Crpratin?
