“Just g up and jump. Dn’t think. If yu d, yu’ll just cmplicate things,” shuted Nun, a phtgrapher travelling with me n a press trip t Switzerland. I held nt the cld metal railing (栏杆), while he egged n me t keep ging.
As I reached the tp f the ladder leading up t the diving bard suspended ver a green pnd and lked ver at the vast nthingness sandwiched between, I did exactly what Nun tld me. The next thing I knew was that I walked t the edge, clsed my eyes, held my breath and jumped.
I dn’t remember the fall. What I d remember is the time it tk me t break int the water’s surface. It felt like a century. Fr me, a male adult wh gt by with breast strkes and culdn’t tread (踩) water withut hlding nt smething, it felt like a barrier had been vercme. Smething changed the mment I jumped ff that five-meter-high diving bard int the depths f Drei Weieren, a cld 17th-century pnd in the city f St. Gallen in Switzerland, which its residents crwded fr a swim during summer and t skate in the winter.
I culdn’t stp smiling as I changed ut f my wet clthes in a bath huse and wndered what it was that made me excited. Maybe it was the challenge f ding what I wuld therwise have never tried — jumping ff an edge. Maybe it was the freedm that Nun’s wrds frced me t pursue. What he said hlds true fr s much f life, desn’t it? Dn’t we all cmplicate things by thinking mre than we need t? Smetimes ne needs t quiet the vice f self-dubt and thrw neself int smething.
I enjyed being wrapped in exhilaratin, s ver the next week, I threw cautin t the winds and tried new things with varying levels f success.

A garden cnstructed with “humble” clay fashined int 3D-printed bricks has claimed the first green medal at the Chelsea Flwer Shw fr being the mst envirnmentally sustainable design.
The Chelsea Flwer Shw, a celebrated glbal event held annually at Chelsea, Lndn, has been a crnerstne f the gardening calendar since 1913. It began as a way t shwcase the latest trends in gardening and plant varieties. The Envirnmental Innvatin Award is the first f its srt and ges alng with the gld, silver and brnze medals awarded t the mst attractive and interesting gardens.
Giuli Girgi, a first-time Chelsea designer, stated he created the green-medal-winning garden with n cncrete. Mst gardens cntain cncrete in sme frm and the materials they are built frm ften generate the highest carbn ftprint.
While the emplyment f pllinatr-friendly plants, wild areas and sensible use f water are well-knwn easy ways t make a garden mre sustainable, Girgi said it was crucial t fcus n the building materials as their carbn ftprint was ften verlked.
“We typically use a lt f metal, glue, cement and then all the energy we have t put in t build the gardens. The material in ur garden is lw-temperature-fired clay, a resurce that can be fund pretty much everywhere. We made this clay int 3D-printed bricks, cnnecting ancient traditin with nvel practices s carbn emissins are the lwest pssible, if any. The bricks, peppered with tiny hles, can absrb water and release it when drught strikes plants,” said Girgi.
Judges cnsidered end-f-life plans fr the gardens and whether materials culd be reused. The 3D-printed nature f Girgi’s garden means it can easily be taken apart and put tgether again. As a result, when it is relcated t RHS Garden Wisley, where it will live n after the shw as an educatinal facility, the carbn emissins will be lw as n materials will be wasted.
8.What d we knw abut the Chelsea Flwer Shw?
A.It values sustainability as well as appeal.
B.Its initial aim was t encurage utdr fitness.
      C.It requires cmpeting gardens t be cncrete-free.
      D.It has a lng-standing traditin f champining greenness.
9.What advantage des clay have ver ther building materials accrding t Girgi?
A.It catches fire less easily.B.It’s mre durable and absrbent.
C.It takes less labr t prduce.D.It’s ec-friendly and mre available.
10.What will becme f Girgi’s garden after the shw?
A.It’ll be sld publicly.B.It’ll serve as an urban landmark.
C.It’ll be turned int a schl.D.It’ll cme int play in anther spt.
11.What can be the best title fr the text?
      A.Clay Bricks: Recyclable Building Material
B.Chelsea Flwer Shw: Celebratin f Gardening
C.Garden with Clay Bricks: Winner f Green Medal
D.Giuli Girgi: Designer Enthusiastic abut High-Tech

Glbal warming has led t an increase in the frequency and intensity f extreme weather events, such as heat waves, heavy rainfall and drughts, impacting human health and ecsystems. T determine hw much glbal warming has cntributed t heat waves in the U. S. and elsewhere in recent years and t design effective slutins, AI was utilized by researchers at Stanfrd University and Clrad State University.
In their methd, which was detailed in an Aug. 21 study in Science Advances, researchers trained AI mdels by using data frm a large database f climate mdel simulatins (气候模型模拟) extending frm 1850 t 2100 t predict daily maximum temperatures based n real-wrld reginal weather and glbal mean temperature. They then estimated hw much htter heat waves wuld be if the exact same weather cnditins that had caused past heat waves ccurred under higher levels f glbal warming.
They first tested their AI methd n the 2023 Texas heat wave, which led t a recrd number f heat-related deaths that year, finding that glbal warming increased the heat wave’s temperature by 1.18 t 1.42℃ cmpared t a nn-climate change scenari. The AI als accurately predicted the intensity f recrd-setting heat waves in ther regins. The team warned that if glbal temperatures rse by 2.0℃ abve pre-industrial levels, sme f the wrst heat waves ver the past 45 years culd happen multiple times per decade. Glbal temperature is currently appraching 1.3℃ abve pre-industrial levels.
“While AI hasn’t slved all the scientific challenges, it bridges the gap between the actual meterlgical (气象的) cnditins and climate mdels, enabling us t cnduct mre generalized virtual experiments n the Earth system and prviding valuable insights fr climate scientists and plicymakers alike,” said the study’s lead authr Nah Diffenbaugh, a prfessr at Stanfrd University.
T gain deeper insights int hw human emissins affect extreme weather and t better prepare fr the future, the team intends t apply this methd t ther extreme weather events and enhance AI netwrks fr higher frecasting accuracy, including quantifying uncertainties in AI predictins.
12.Hw did the researchers train the AI mdels?
A.By predicting daily maximum temperatures.B.By creating their wn data exclusively.
C.By analyzing satellite temperature images.D.By emplying data frm a previus database.
13.What can we knw frm paragraph 3?
A.Glbal temperature has risen by 1.3℃ s far.
B.Glbal warming has caused htter heat waves.
C.This AI methd enjyed the highest accuracy.
D.The Texas heat wave was the nly event tested by the AI.
14.What is Nah Diffenbaugh’s attitude tward the AI apprach used in this study?
      A.Dismissive.B.Dubtful.C.Indifferent.D.Favrable.
15.What’s the authr’s purpse in writing this text?
A.T discuss AI’s rle in predicting weather extremes.
B.T discuss the effects f glbal warming.
C.T reprt new extreme weather findings in the U. S. A.
D.T shw AI’s use in linking heat waves t glbal warming.
