When mst middle schl students g n field trips, they might bring back phts. But at Chicag’s Garfield Park Lagn, ne student brught back smething far mre significant: bacteria (细菌) frm gse drppings (鹅粪) that culd help scientists develp new cancer treatments.
The discvery came frm an innvative prgram called the Chicag Antibitic Discvery Lab, where students frm underserved cmmunities wrk alngside university scientists t explre their neighbrhds fr beneficial bacteria. Led by Brian Murphy at the University f Illinis Chicag, the 14-week prgram, in cncert with the Bys and Girls Club f Chicag, aims t bridge gaps in science educatin while prducing meaningful research.
These yung participants became real scientists befre entering high schl. Rather than bserving frm the sidelines, they actively participate in lab wrk. Students learn t prgram and perate a specialized rbt that cllects bacteria and tests them fr antibitic activity (抗菌活性). This apprach transfrms students int scientific investigatrs, giving them real-wrld experience while cntributing t pssible medical breakthrughs.
Frm 14 samples f gse drppings cllected by the students, ne particular sample frm 11-year-ld Camarria Williams std ut. The bacteria discvered in the sample called Pseudmnas idahnensis prduced a previusly unknwn chemical called rfamide N. Williams helped examine lab data, discvering the bacteria’s prmising antibitic activity. When testing the chemical’s effects n cancer cells, researchers fund that relatively small amunts f rfamide N culd slw dwn the grwth f sme cancer cells.
Hwever, this represents early-stage research, and many chemicals that shw initial prmise dn’t becme medicines. Years f additinal study wuld be needed t understand if this discvery culd lead t practical medical applicatins. While the lng-term impact f rfamide N remains t be seen, the impact f this discvery n the students invlved is already clear. They’ve learned that science isn’t just smething that happens in distant labs. It’s happening in their wn neighbrhds, and they can be part f it.
