After travelling nearly 10,000 kilmeters, a package frm Britain arrived at the memrial hall fr the Lisbn Maru incident n Dngji Island in Zhushan City, Zhejiang Prvince this mnth. Inside the package was a painting belnging t Graham Saxby, which was his gift t the fishermen n Dngji Island.
In Octber 1942, the Lisbn Maru, an armed Japanese carg ship, was trpeded (鱼雷击中) ff the Zhushan islands in Zhejiang, and it was the Americans wh carried ut this actin. The ship was transprting sme 1,800 British prisners f war (POWs) frm Hng Kng t Japan, amng whm was Saxby’s father. While the ship was sinking, the POWs were cnfined (监禁) in the hlds. As they tried t escape, many were sht by the Japanese. Lcal Chinese fishermen risked their lives during the shting and rescued as many POWs as they culd using their small bats.
