Hwever, she didn’t always want t be a teacher. “I ften said I wuld never be a teacher.” says PiwIski. “I grew up where a lt f my family members were teachers. I hnestly didn’t want t d what everyne else in my family had dne. I wanted t be a lawyer.”
Despite her wish t fllw a career in law, she culdn’t ignre her “true” calling in life. “I started teaching pian when I was in high schl.” says Piwlski. “I lved every minute that I spent with my students, watching them grw and struggle. I think yu learn the mst when yu face yur struggles and that is ne f the things I want t instill (灌输) in my students. I want t say it’s OK t struggle. It’s OK t have that cnflict inside f yu that says this is hard, learning hard — but that’s when yu grw the mst. S I think that pian teaching gave me that and instilled the lve f teaching in me.”
While at cllege, she reflected n her time as a pian teacher and realized she had t fllw her calling t teach. “I gave in t my calling and became an educatr,” says Piwlski. “After graduating, I fund a cntract and taught my first class in first grade in Califrnia.”
Piwlski stayed there fr 14 years, teaching special educatin and general educatin t students frm pre-K level all the way thrugh t 12th grade. She then mved back t Minnesta t raise her children. While taking this career break, Piwlski decided t study fr her PhD.
“I gt my PhD because that’s smething I’d always wanted t d and I wanted t shw my kids that with perseverance (坚持) yu can d anything,” says Piwlski. “They were in schl. s it wasn’t easy.” Anyhw, she managed t graduate with determinatin and supprt frm family members.

Playing a musical instrument r singing culd help keep the brain healthy in lder age, UK researchers suggest. In their reprt, published in the Internatinal Jurnal f Geriatric Psychiatry, they say music shuld be cnsidered as part f a lifestyle apprach t maintain the brain.
Mre than 1,100 peple aged ver 40, with an average age f 68, were studied. Scientists bserved their brain functin data, lking at the effects f playing an instrument, singing, reading and listening t music.
The researchers cmpared the cgnitive (认知) data f thse in the study wh engaged in music in sme way in their lives, with thse wh never had. Their results shwed that peple wh played musical instruments benefited the mst, which may be because f the “multiple cgnitive demands” f the activity.
“Playing the pian r keybard appeared t be particularly beneficial. Simply listening t music did nt appear t help cgnitive health. The benefit seen with singing might be partly because f the knwn scial aspects f being in a chir r grup.” the researchers say.
“Because we have such sensitive brain tests fr this study, we are able t lk at individual aspects f the brain functin, such as shrt-term memry, lng-term memry and prblem-slving,” lead authr Anne Crbett said.
“Playing an instrument has a particularly big effect, and peple wh cntinue t play int an lder age saw an additinal benefit,” she said. “Our brain is a muscle like anything else and it needs t be exercised, and learning t read music is a bit like learning a new language.” In the study, peple wh read music regularly had better numerical memry.
“The message is arund hw peple can practively reduce their risk f cgnitive decline r dementia (痴呆), and really thinking abut engaging with music as a way f ding that.” Anne said. Hwever, she added. “It wuld be naive t think taking up a musical instrument wuld mean yu wn’t develp dementia.”
      28. What des the research say abut music?
      A. It takes cnstant practice.B. It des ld peple’s brains a favr.
      C. It imprves lng-term memry.D. It sharpens the language ability.
      29. Hw is the research carried ut?
      A. By cnducting a survey.B. By citing an expert.
      C. By making cmparisn.D. By exercising the brain.
      30. Which best describes playing musical instruments?
      A. Emtinally disturbing.B. Mentally pleasing.
      C. Physically challenging.D. Cgnitively demanding.
      31. Which wrd can replace the underlined wrd “naive” in the last paragraph?
      A. inncent.B. cmplicated.C. realistic.D. wise.
      D
Slar and wind energy are transfrming hw we pwer ur wrld, but t fully use these renewable surces, we need reliable and affrdable batteries t stre energy. Researchers at the University f Wiscnsin-Madisn (UW-Madisn) have taken a step twards this gal by inventing a water-sluble chemical additive that enhances the perfrmance f brmide aqueus flw (溴化物水溶液) batteries, a prmising energy strage slutin.
Current large-scale energy strage relies n lithium-in (锂离子) batteries, which have limitatins like safety cncerns, risk f fires and reliance n cmplex internatinal supply chains. In cntrast, aqueus flw batteries culd ffer a super and mre sustainable alternative. These batteries use water-based liquid that circulate ver electrdes (电极) separated by a membrane (膜). They are scalable and less dangerus than lithium-in batteries.
Brmide, a cheap and widely available in, culd replace expensive vanadium in flw batteries. Hwever, brmide-based batteries face challenges: Brmide ins can pass thrugh the membrane, reducing efficiency, r frm a messy il r pisnus brmine gas, making them impractical fr large-scale use.
T tackle these issues, the UW-Madisn team, including Patrick Sullivan and Gyhun Chi, develped a new additive called a “sft-hard zwitterinic trapper”. This additive packages brmide ins, keeping them water-sluble while preventing them frm passing thrugh the membrane r frming harmful byprducts. As a result, the battery becmes mre efficient and stable.
With the additive, the researchers achieved remarkable results: The batteries lasted almst tw mnths withut perfrmance decay, cmpared t just ne day withut it. “Fr green energy strage, durability is critical. These batteries need t functin fr 10 t 20 years,” says anther researcher.
Mving frward, the team aims t refine their discvery. Chi will explre fundamental science, while Sullivan, nw CEO f a renewable energy startup, will wrk n cmmercializing the additive, already prven t be prducible n an industrial scale.
      32. What prblem des the new chemical additive slve?
      A. Prducing mre energy in smaller batteries.B. Advancing brmide aqueus flw batteries.
      C. Imprving the safety f lithium-in batteries.D. Replacing vanadium with expensive materials.
      33. Why are aqueus flw batteries safer than lithium-in batteries?
      A. They are based n water-based liquid.
      B. They rely n an internatinal supply chain.
      C. They have n membranes separating electrdes.
      D. They use brmide ins instead f vanadium ins.
      34. What is the new additive used t d?
      A. T allw brmide ins t frm a stable gas.
      B. T prevent brmide ins frm causing inefficiency issues.
      C. T increase the speed f energy transfer in batteries.
      D. T remve the need fr membranes in batteries.
      35. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. The Rle f Slar and Wind Energy in the Future
      B. The Benefits f Lithium-In Batteries in Energy Strage
      C. Challenges f Large-Scale Renewable Energy Strage
      D. A Breakthrugh in Brmide-Based Flw Batteries
