Nichlas Sparks is an American nvelist knwn fr his best-selling tales f rmance (浪漫) and heartbreak.
Sparks grew up mainly in nrth-central Califrnia, where his family mved when he was eight. He attended the University f Ntre Dame n a track schlarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him t write his first unpublished nvel. That’s the cnclusin f an internatinal grup f researchers, wh fund that dgs have twice as many neurns (神经元) as cats. Neurns are cells that deal with infrmatin. And s, the mre neurns an animal has, the better its infrmatin prcessing capability, these scientists say.
The study was carried ut by researchers frm six universities in the US, Brazil, Denmark and Suth Africa. It’s ging t be published in the jurnal Frntiers in Neuranatmy. The research was dne in the lab f Suzana Herculan-Huzel, an assciate prfessr f psychlgy and bilgical sciences at Vanderbilt University.
Until recently, scientists interested in cmparing intelligence acrss species were limited t using brain size as a sign. “In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way t cunt the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculan-Huzel said. What the researchers did was take sme brain matter and basically turn it int a sup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) s that the scientists culd cunt them directly under a micrscpe.
This is what they fund when they lked at the cerebral crtex f cats and dgs. The cerebral crtex is the part f the brain that prcesses infrmatin. A cat’s cerebral crtex has 250 millin neurns. A 15-pund mixed-breed (混合种) dg’s has 429 millin.
When they lked at a 64-pund glden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 millin neurns. “S, it’s plausible t say that dgs have abut twice as many neurns as cats in their cerebral crtex,” she said. “And this means that dgs can d mre thinking things than cats.”
