In June, 2007, a grup f students frm eight high-schls in Winnipeg, the capital f Canada’s Manitba Prvince, will begin test-launching (试发射) a satellite the size f a Rubik’s cube.
The ne-kilgram Win-Cube satellite, named fr its hme city and its shape, will be put int lw rbit. Once in space, it can perfrm fr a few mnths r up t several years, cmmunicating infrmatin that culd help find the signs f earthquakes.
There are 80 similar satellite prjects wrldwide, but this is the first high-schl-based prgram f its kind in Canada. 30 Manitba’s high schl students are having a hand in designing and building the satellite, in cperatin with aerspace experts and 10 students frm the University f Manitba, and with supprt frm tw ther rganizatins.
The Win-Cube prject is nt smething that ges n a piece f paper; it is real-wrld engineering, allwing high schl students t have an pprtunity t learn mre abut the exciting wrld f engineering thrugh their participatin in this challenging prgram. The gifted scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are ne thing. He called it “spacetime”. Einstein said that there are three dimensins in space: height, width and depth. A mathematician named Hermann Minkwski added time as a furth dimensin.
Einstein intrduced tw ideas that have led t theries abut the pssibility f time travel. The first is relativity. The idea f relativity is that the frce f gravity causes space t bend, which causes time t twist. The secnd idea fcuses n special relativity. The idea is that a traveler mving super fast thrugh flat spacetime will enter the future. Einstein cnsidered time “relative” because it is measured based n where we are n Earth r in space.
Stephen Hawking is a famus scientist. He believed that a time machine wuld never be built. If it were pssible, he thught, we wuld already knw. If a time machine culd be built, hw cme n ne frm the future has invaded us?
