“I Went Skydiving at 84! ”
As a yung girl grwing up in the 1930s, I always wanted t fly a plane, but back then it was almst unheard f a wman t d that. I gt a taste f that dream in 2001,when my husband arranged fr me t ride in a ht air balln fr my birthday. But the experience turned ut t be very dull. Arund that time, I tld my husband that I wanted t skydive. S when ur retirement cmmunity annunced that they were having an essay cmpetitin and the tpic was an experience f a lifetime that yu wanted t have,I decided t write abut my dream.
In the essay,I wrte abut my desire t skydive, stating that Gerge Bush Sr. did it at age 80. Why nt me? I was just 84 and in pretty gd health. A year went by and I heard nthing. But then at a cmmunity party in late April 2009, they annunced that I was ne f the winners. I just culdn’t believe it. Inspired by this,I decided t realize my dream, even thugh sme f my family members and my dctr were against it.
On June 11,2009,nearly 40 f my family and friends gathered in the area clse t where I wuld land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructr, Jay, guided me thrugh the experience. The plane was the nisiest ne I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just lking frward t the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me t thrw myself ut f the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was s strng that I culd hardly breathe. Fr a secnd I thught, “What have I gtten myself int?” But then everything gt calmer. We were in a free fall fr abut a minute befre Jay pened the parachute(降落伞),and then we just flated dwnward fr abut five minutes. Being up in the cluds and lking at the view belw was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the ht air balln. I was just enjying it.
Skydiving was really ne f the greatest experiences f my life. I hpe ther peple will lk at me and realize that yu dn’t stp living just because yu are 84 years ld. If there’s smething yu want t experience, lk int it. If it’s smething that is pssible, make it happen.

Sme peple describe American sciety as a bwl f salad while thers think f it as a melting pt.
In a bwl f salad, all the ingredients are mixed tgether. 1 Tgether, hwever, the ingredients make up a unity. All the ingredients f a salad cntribute t the finished prduct. They may be cvered with the same dressing(调料),but the green vegetables, tmates and cked crn can all be seen fr what they are.
Frm this pint f view,America is very much like a salad bwl where individual ethnic grups mix tgether, yet maintain their cultural uniqueness. Peple may wrk tgether during the day at similar jbs and in the same cmpanies, but at night they may return t their ethnic grups where their wn individual culture directs their way f life. 2 Each ethnic grup has its wn special custms, language, fd and traditins t prtect and defend. This idea f the salad bwl is referred t as cultural diversity; that is, American sciety is a cllectin f varius cultures living tgether in harmny within ne cuntry.
3 Here, sciety is like ne large pt f sup. All cultural aspects are mixed tgether, sacrificing their riginal identity and keeping a bit f what they were t becme a new reality. The lnger the sup is cked the better the taste and the mre likely it will be fr the mixture t disslve. In this sense, America can surely be seen as a melting pt where peple frm all ver the wrld cme t live and wrk tgether frmingnenatin. There aredzens f shared symbls. 4 In such a culture, symbls like the flag and the natin’s fficial sng serve t break dwn the walls which separate ethnic grups.

E. Thus, neneeds tabandnhis culture t be cnsidered “American”.

A
But being half the size f the ther bys,he culd nly sit n the bench and hardly ever played in games可知,由于他的体形几乎是其他男孩的一半大小,所以他只能成为板凳球员,很少参加比赛,所以约翰几乎没有机会参加比赛的原因是他的身体条件不好。
When Jhn went t cllege,he decided t try ut fr the ftball team as a “walk-n”. 所以判断出第二段中带下划线的短语“make the cut’”可替换为 be allwed t jin the team。
由最后一段中的“well, yu knew my dad died, but did yu knw that my dad was blind?”…… “Dad came t all my games, but tday was the first time he culd see me play”可知,约翰的父亲去世了,他的父亲是个盲人,生前参加了他所有的比赛,今天是他第一次“看到”约翰上场踢足球赛,他想让父亲知道他能行。
I gt a taste f that dream in 2001,when my husband arranged fr me t ride in a ht air balln fr my birthday.
In the essay,I wrte abut my desire t skydive, stating that Gerge Bush Sr.did it at age 80.
When we first hit the air,the wind was s strng that I culd hardly breathe. Fr a secnd I thught, “What have I gtten myself int?But then everything gt calmer.”
Being up in the cluds and lking at the view belw was unlike anything I have ever felt--much better than the ht air balln. I was just enjying it.
