Pestaltipsis micrspra(微孢子)is the nly knwn fungus t be able t survive nly n plastic. The plastic is s hard that it takes thusands f years t break dwn n its wn.
The best part is that these fungi can d the jb even in an xygenless envirnment, which means that it culd wrk perfectly even at the bttm f a landfill.
The discvery was the result f an effrt between three Yale students wh were part f the Rainfrest Expeditin and Labratry Prgram, allwing a selected grup f students t visit Ecuadr’s rainfrest and seek ut fungi and bacteria that live inside plants withut harming them, which culd hld medical r scientific prmise. The samples are then brught back t the University’s lab where they d wide testing t see if they are f any practical r scientific use.
In 2008, a student named Pria Anand gathered specimens fr ne purpse—t find a micrbe that culd eat plastic. That’s when she came acrss the Pestaltipsis micrspra. Thugh she did shw the unbelievable characteristics f the fungi, she was unable t get the desired results by the time she graduated, in 2010.
Luckily fr her Jnathan Russell, a 2011 graduating student, picked up right where she had left ff. By cmbining her wrk with research perfrmed by anther f Pria’s classmates, Jeffery Huang, he was able t separate the enzyme (酶) in the fungus that is the mst effective in breaking dwn plastic.
