Every English learner needs t knw hw t ask fr smething in English. There are a number f ways t d this. If yu knw smene has smething, yu can ask fr it with a plite questin. If yu dn’t knw, it’s pssible t ask fr smething with a yes r n questin. Be careful nt t use the direct expressins. In ther wrds, dn’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the fllwing examples, “D yu have a pen I culd brrw?” “Is there any wine?” “Did yu buy any bread?”
If yu knw r see smene has smething, ask a plite questin with “culd”, “may” r “might”. It’s als pssible t use “can” in sme special situatins. In the past, “can” was nt used when peple asked fr smething, but meant ability. In the UK, peple mainly use “Can yu lend me…?” r “Can I have…?” In the US, this is still cnsidered t be wrng and “May I have…?” is preferred.
