When I was in middle schl, my scial studies teacher apprached me abut entering a writing cntest. At first, I declined withut thinking because English was nly my secnd language. Writing was s difficult and painful fr me that my teacher allwed me t present my paper n the sinking f the Titanic by acting ut a play, where I played all the parts. N ne laughed harder than he did. S, why did he suddenly frce me t d smething at which I was sure t fail? His reply, “Because I lve yur stries. If yu’re willing t apply yurself I think yu have a gd sht at this.”
Encuraged by his wrds, I agreed t give it a try. After much thinking, I settled n an uncnventinal tpic: Paul Revere’s hrse. I decided t narrate (叙述) the events f that histric night frm the hrse’s perspective. It was an unusual chice, but I hped it wuld set my writing apart frm the thers.
As I began t write, I fund myself empathizing (同情) with the hrse’s jurney. What did the hrse think, as sped thrugh the night? Did he get tired? Have dubts? Did he want t quit? Like the hrse, I t encuntered challenges alng the way. There were mments f exhaustin, self-dubt, and a strng desire t give up. But I persisted, fueled by the encuragement f my teacher and my wn determinatin.
I pured myself int the essay, carefully checking spelling and grammar and absrbed in research at the library. With each revisin, I imprved my strytelling skills and grew mre passinate abut the prcess.
When I handed in the final draft t my teacher, he laughed at the humr and creativity in my writing but challenged me t refine it even further. And s, I revised and rewrte tirelessly until I felt a sense f satisfactin with the finished prduct.
In the end, the thught f winning the cntest tk a backseat t the jy I fund in the writing itself. Whether r nt I emerged victrius was n lnger my primary cncern. I had discvered a passin and a sense f achievement that went beynd any awards.

As warm bld spattered all ver us, I screamed… actually it was water, but that didn’t stp me being s scared that my heart was nearly beating ut f my chest. My friend had persuaded me nt the Htel Psych ride at the Prater Amusement Park, I’m unwilling t experience any fear, but I decided t d it anyway. I came ff the ride shaking but excited.
Apparently Eleanr Rsevelt didn’t actually say “d ne thing that scares yu every day”, as is ften thught, but nevertheless it’s a great rule t fllw. Yu dn’t need t g n a fairgrund ride r jump ut f a plane, but it is a gd idea t push yurself ut f yur cmfrt zne regularly.
The human brain, particularly the amygdale (杏仁核), is designed t keep yu safe. This sunds like a gd thing, and bviusly, smetimes it is. Hwever, the fact that the amygdala is always n the lkut fr danger means that it will priritize prtecting yu ver almst anything else: learning smething new, experiencing smething amazing, getting a great pprtunity and meeting ther peple. The amygdala wuld really just like yu t stay put in a nice safe dark cave.
The mre yu listen t its urgings t avid all risks, the narrwer and darker yur life will becme. There is plenty f evidence that the mst effective way t deal with ur fears and anxieties is expsing urselves t what we fear. Yu can start ff with small steps, but the mre yu cnfrnt (面对) yur fears, the smaller they becme: whereas the mre yu allw yur fears t prevent yu frm ding things, the bigger thse fears seem t be.
Fr this reasn, it is imprtant t stretch yurself and keep all thse pssibilities pen. Yu need t take risks and d things that petrify yu, s that yu knw just what yu’re capable f. Smetimes thse risks wn’t wrk ut, but that’s fine, as lng as yu can learn frm the experience, and get ready fr the next adventure.

D. They might be regular visitrs t ur life.
31. What des the underlined wrd “petrify” in the last paragraph mean?
