Fr many in America, fd waste is a way f life: a discarded (丢弃) apple here, a half-eaten dinner plate there. But just hw much fd d Americans waste, and why? A new research casts light n the dirty little habit that squanders ver 30 percent f the cuntry’s fd supply and csts $161.6 billin a year, a habit driven in part by fear f fd pisning and a desire t eat nly the freshest fds.
When public health researchers frm Jhns Hpkins University surveyed Americans abut their feelings n fd waste, they fund that “Americans are pretty picky abut what gets t stay in their fridges.” The survey, which was cnducted nline and cvered a natinally representative sample f 1,010 adults, asked questins abut the things that mtivate peple t keep and thrw ut fd frm their fridges.

On the ther hand, respndents seemed relatively mtivated t waste less fd — but nt fr the reasns yu might think. Peple were mst mtivated t reduce fd waste due t desires t save mney and manage their husehlds efficiently. But regardless f the fact that fd waste causes a significant envirnmental impact and nly a small part f fd waste is cmpsted, less than half f respndents thught it was imprtant t reduce fd waste fr envirnmental reasns.
Rni Neff, wh leads the research, hpes the results will help educatrs, plicymakers and businesses make changes — like highlighting the ecnmic csts f fd waste — that are actually likely t reduce waste. But perhaps the mst effective strategy, writes Neff, culd be clarifying messages abut fd safety and freshness s that Americans get less alarmed by the ptential f fd pisning t begin with.

    A. Enrmus fd waste.B. The desire t save mney.
    C. Envirnmental awareness.D. The need t cmpst fd.
    15. What des Neff suggest in the last paragraph?
