Fr many in America, fd waste is a way f life: a discarded (丢弃) apple here, a half-eaten dinner plate there. But just hw much fd d Americans waste, and why? A new research casts light n the dirty little habit that squanders ver 30 percent f the cuntry’s fd supply and csts $161.6 billin a year, a habit driven in part by fear f fd pisning and a desire t eat nly the freshest fds.

Rni Neff, wh leads the research, hpes the results will help educatrs, plicymakers and businesses make changes — like highlighting the ecnmic csts f fd waste — that are actually likely t reduce waste.
