Cmplaining is a habit I cultivated since childhd, a skill I develped thrugh the years. My parents didn’t seem t mind—they were great cmplainers, t—thugh I d recall sme eye-rlling and lng-drawn sighs frm friends and schlmates when I wuld vice my negative pinins. In fact, I can distinctly recall the exact mment when I first realized my cmplaining habit reached its expert level.
One day, as I reminded ray husband nce again t remve his bills frm the dining-rm table, put his shes away, and lwer that bthersme radi, he put up his hand.“Stp! Yu’re yur cmplaining. It’s driving me crazy.”
I lked at him blank-eyed.
He tk a deep breath. “Yu never hear me cmplaining, d yu?”
“Well,” I answered, “yu’re cmplaining abut my cmplaining, s actually, yes, I am hearing yu cmplain right nw.”
His eyes widened. A drp f sweat frmed his upper lip. Then he grabbed his car keys and ran ut f the dr.
Perhaps I’d gne t far, I thught. Maybe I really did cmplain t much. But, what t d abut it? After all, it had been a lifetime habit. And habits are hard t break.
I tk a break and sat dwn t think abut slutin. When I felt annyed, I culd lck myself in the bathrm and scream. N. The neighbrs wuld prbably hear me. Phne a friend? She prbably wuldn’t be a friend fr very lng. Then it hit me.
I’d been in the habit f keeping a jurnal fr mst f my life. It prvided a srt f timeline fr me,and I liked t review past entries ccasinally t review the path I had been n at that pint. Jurnaling kept me hnest with myself, and I liked it fr that reasn. Perhaps, I thugh, a cmplaint jurnal might be the answer I was seeking.
