I was a yung newspaper reprter, and I wanted t succeed. My first jb was in Latin America. It was almst my last jb.
I had nt planned t stay in the village f Zacate, but it had been raining hard fr a whle day. S I had t stay there.
I fund peple there full f fear. This village was at the ft f a vlcan. It was becming mre active. Men, wmen and children came t the square. A few helped each ther and went ut f twn t get as far away frm the vlcan as pssible, with large and full packs in their hands. Suddenly, I felt a strng earthquake. The villagers in the square ran away as sn as they felt the earthquake.
Suddenly, I saw black smke rlling dwn the side f the muntain twards the village. Trees and grass burned up in a secnd. The vlcan eruptin was cming s fast that in less than a minute the rads t the village were cut ff. All I culd d was watch and wait. Suddenly, my landlrd (房东) cried ut, “Lk!” He pinted t a small hill, which was near t us. The lava (岩浆) was nt cming ver it but flwing n each side f the village, leaving the village centre undamaged. Fr a time, at least, we were safe, unless the lava grew much bigger.
My landlrd gave me a wet blanket t cver myself t avid the heat and we pured water ver ur heads t cl urselves. We culd hardly breathe because f the heat and the smke f the burning huses. Thanks t my landlrd, I survived the vlcan.

Imagine a schl where students are taught by the best teachers in every subject, regardless f lcatins. Imagine a schl where children can g n safe field trips t the Amazn rainfrest r Everest base camp. Well, such schls are already being built: in virtual reality (VR).
Last mnth, Optima Academy Online (OAO) was launched in Flrida and started t deliver curses fr elementary, middle and high schls and 170 full-time students frm all ver the state signed up. They used VR headsets fr abut three hurs a day fr frmal lessns and then d curse wrk independently with digital check-ins.
It is wrth watching hw such educatinal experiments develp. Used prperly, the VR technlgy can help students t access learning resurces and be cnnected with fellw students and teachers all ver the wrld. But if emplyed prly, it will have the ppsite effect and turn a digital inequality int an educatinal ne.
There is grwing evidence t suggest that it is happening. In Mexic, accrding t a survey, nly 24% f 15-year-ld students in pr schls have access t hme cmputers fr schlwrk cmpared with 87% in rich nes. As reprted in anther study, sme students in nrthern England have been frced t travel arund n the Greater Manchester train netwrk r camp ut arund McDnald’s t access free WiFi because they cannt d their schlwrk at hme.
“VR technlgies will be widely used in educatin. The nly questins are: fr what purpse and at what speed?” says Beeban Kidrn, a member f the UK’s Digital Futures Cmmissin. “The truble is that they are t ften seen as a shiny new ty that will slve all prblems and save mney rather than being viewed as a means t enrich learning.”
The inescapable truth is that there is nthing that can replace teachers educating students in safe schls—ideally, with access t well-designed technlgical platfrms. Leaving children in their bedrms with just VR headsets and n physical scial interactin with ther kids will fill many f them—and their parents—with hrrr.

    C. Shw the advantages f VR headsets.D. Intrduce an unsuccessful nline schl.

    A. will replace traditinal learningB. are the future f educatin
    C. will becme a very helpful tlD. are a means t save mney
    31. Which wrd can best describe the authr’s attitude t OAO?
    A. Supprtive.B. Disapprving.C. Dubtful.D. Unclear.

Fr sme peple, nthing beats a lng walk n a sandy beach. But there’s n denying that it’s nt as easy r as fast t get arund n the beach as it is n a rad r a sidewalk. But why is it s hard t walk n sand?
The prblem with sand is that it’s sft; yu “sink in” at each step. This frces yu t use 2.1 t 2.7 times mre energy with every step yu take. Anther idea is that peple walk mre difficultly n sft than they d n hard surfaces, a study fund. The researchers cmpared hw peple walked n fam (泡沫) and hard surfaces by analyzing the frces under their feet and hw much xygen each persn cnsumed. They fund that walking n sft surfaces, such as sand, mud and snw, caused peple t take lnger steps——actins that use mre energy than walking n a hard surface.
But as experienced beach walkers knw, there’s a way t make it easier t walk n sand: Just add water. When sand is wet, it becmes mre cmpact (紧密), and walking n it is mre similar t walking n hard surface. In ther wrds, it’s much easier t crss a beach by walking alng the shreline, where the waves rll in and ut. This is a balance thugh; t much water culd make the sand sft nce again. If water isn’t an ptin, there is anther way t make walking n sand easier— increasing yur surface area. This culd be accmplished by wearing shes.
Althugh it’s mre difficult, there are sme gd reasns t exercise n sand. The impact frces are lwer n sand than n hard surface. Research suggests that walking acrss sand is much easier n yur jints (关节) and muscles, especially cmpared with an unfrgiving surface such as cncrete (混凝土). This means sand is a better surface fr helping athletes recver mre quickly frm wrkuts.
    32. Why is the questin raised in the first paragraph?
    A. T shw prblems.B. T call up readers’ memries.
    C. T invite readers t answer it.D. T draw readers’ attentin t the tpic.
    33. Hw can yu walk n sand mre easily?
    A. By putting n shes.B. By taking lnger steps.
    C. By walking in the water.D. By using special breath methds.
    34. Which f the fllwing surfaces is unsuitable fr athletes’ training?
    A. Sand.B. Cncrete.C. Fam.D. Snw.
    35. What may be the best title fr the text?
    A. Tips fr Beach VacatinB. All Kinds f Sprts n the Sand
    C. Why Is It S Hard t Walk n Sand?D. Where Are We With the Sand Research?
