Considering that there was no better way. Mrs. Smith took a piece of paper, and wrote the following words on it“Give my dog half a pound of meat.” Then she gave the paper to her dog and said gently“Take this to the butcher屠夫and he's going to give you your lunch today.”

Holding the piece of paper in its mouth, the dog ran to the butcher's. It gave the paper to the butcher. The butcher read it carefully, recognized that it was really the lady's handwriting and soon did it as he was asked to. The dog was very happy, and ate the meat up at once.

The next day, the dog came again exactly at noon. And as usual, it brought a piece of paper in the mouth. This time, the butcher did not take a look at paper, and gave the dog its meat, for he had regarded the dog as one of his customers顾客.

Last summer holiday, Aunt Emily took us to a safari park (野生动物园), not far from Liverpool.

I was very happy to go as I had never been to a safari park before. It’s a very interesting park, full of wild animals running freely.

When we got there, we bought our tickets and drove into the park. We were very excited at the thought of going to see the lions. But to get to the lions’ place we had to go through the monkeys’ land first. And that was an unforgettable experience because they climbed all over the car, ate apples and bananas, and threw all kinds of things at us. They seemed very unfriendly.

Anyway, we went on our way to the lions’ place where we had to lock ourselves in the car as we knew lions could be dangerous. A lion came up very close to us. Then it was on the bonnet (车盖). It looked calm but we felt terrified. Aunt Emily, who isn’t very brave, started to call for help. The kids started crying. Only my brother, George, stayed cool. I sounded the horn (喇叭) but nobody heard us.

In the end a guard arrived in his car, and the lion just got off our car and started smelling the guard’s hand as if nothing was the matter.

5Which animal did the author want to see the most?

AThe lions. BThe elephants. CThe monkeys. DAll of them.

6Why did they lock themselves in the car?

ABecause the monkeys might steal things. BBecause they were afraid of being robbed.

CBecause the lions might be dangerous. DBecause something was wrong with the car.

7What does the underlined word “terrified” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    AExcited. BBored. CInterested DScared

8Who stayed calm among the visitors when they met the lion?

AGeorge. BAunt Emily. CThe guard. DThe author.

    C

Plants are very important living things. Life could not go on if there were no plants. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight.

Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals get their food by eating plants and other animals. Therefore animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why we find that there are so many plants around us. If you look carefully at the plants around you, you will find that there are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Flowering plants can make seeds. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽). Spores are very small. Some spores are so small and light that they can float in the air. We may say that spores are quite the same as seeds. When these spores are all on wet and shady places, they usually grow into new plants.

9The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.

Aplants are important for life Bplants cannot grow without air

Cthere are many plants in the world Dwe can not live without water

10.Plants can make food from ________.

Aflower, water and air Bwater, sunlight and air

Cair, water and soil Dair, sun and light

11.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

AOf all living things animals are most important.

BWithout plants, man will die out.

CAll fruits of flowering plants have seeds.

    DSpores are seeds.

    12. This passage may be taken from______.

    A. a medicine book        B. a novel   C. a science magazine    D. an experiment report

        D

Ten years ago I used to be very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.

There’s a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!

Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?

13Compared with ten years ago, what is worse for the author now?

    AHis job. BHis pay.

CHis means of transport. DHis health.

14According to the passage, when the author got the better job, which of the following is NOT true?

    AHe got higher pay.

    BHe found it very stressful.

    CHis working hours weren’t long.

DHe had little free time at weekends.

15After the author had a heart attack, the doctor advised him       .

    Anot to work any longer

Bto take a long vacation abroad

Cnot to eat out any more

Dto stop smoking and take exercise

16What can we learn about the author?

AThe author is not sure what he should do now.

BThe author has taken the doctor’s advice.

CThe author has got another new job.

DThe author feels much better now.

Schools in the UK are cutting time spent on PE lessons because of exam pressures. Secondary school teachers said that older teenagers were especially likely to miss out, because the time spent on physical education for 14-16 -year-olds had fallen in the past five years.

Teachers said that increased pressure to produce exam results was leading to children being pulled out of PE lessons. One in three said exam pressures were behind the decline, and they said subjects such as English and Maths had been given more time at the cost of PE.

Almost all of the teachers from the 487 schools said PE should be more valued for its advantages to young people. Mental health experts also warned that cutting down on exercise could increase children's mental health problems. Cal Strode, spokesman for the Mental Health Foundation, said cutting PE time would be "short-sighted and dangerous". He said, "It is worrying to hear that PE is being cut at a time when students are facing problems with stress and anxiety in increasing numbers. There's a close relationship between mental and physical health."

Tom Madders, director of campaigns at charity Young Minds, said, "Schools' cutting down on physical education because of exam pressures is worrying. Schools that value health also do better in study, so it makes sense to keep good health, rather than putting children under more pressure."

Rising exam stress has been raised as a problem by experts who warn that children are under greater pressure because of a competitive jobs market. Ali Oliver, an expert, said, "The PE is good for physical and mental health. So cutting down physical education time is depriving young people of these advantages at a time when they need them most."

17What do we know about the text?

AGood physical health is good for mental health.

BChildren in the UK have serious mental problems.

CMany teachers don't realize the importance of PE

DSchools that value health do worse in study.

18_______ said that Cutting PE time would be "short-sighted and dangerous".

AThe teachers in the UK  BCal Strode CTom Madders DAli Oliver

19According to the text, the exam pressure is from ______.

    Aparents' expectations   Bfuture work

    Cpoor mental health     Dschools' requirements

20Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    AThe importance of physical education

BTeachers' support of getting more PE time

CThe serious problems of education in the UK

DSchools' cutting down PE time for exam pressure
