    B
One day in elementary schl, a friend asked me “What are yu eating?” as she glanced at my lunchbx. “It smells,” she said, nse crinkled.
I was eating bhindi rti, my favrite Indian snack, which my mm had packed fr me. But feeling embarrassed fr having a “smelly” lunch and wanting t fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbx. That day, I went hungry.
Mst days after that, lunchtime at schl felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying t hide my lunch r sneak quick bites when n ne was lking, I’d insist n bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the ther kids. My mm, wh didn’t grw up eating American fd, tried her best, but the sandwiches never lked, r tasted, as gd as the fd I devured(津津有味地吃) at hme.
I didn’t knw that I wasn’t alne. Many kids with immigrant parents encunter(遭遇) what’s knwn as “the lunchbx mment” at schl: the experience f being judged fr bringing in fd cnsidered culturally different and s being made t feel like an utsider.
Fr this article, I talked with kids wh culd relate. But they als surprised me:They dealt with “the lunchbx mment” differently than I did. Fr example, Satya Singh, 6, wh takes her mm’s Indian cking t lunch mst days, tld me that ne day a classmate said that her al, r ptates, lked like pp. Anther time, smene said that the dal, r lentils, lked like “thrw up”. The next day, Satya brught enugh dal t share with her entire class — and they lved it. Frm then n, she says, “My teacher at schl made a rule: Dn’t yuck smene’s yum.”
Lking back, I wish I’d had the wisdm f Satya and ffered my friend a bite f my lunch, r just tld her it was delicius — especially because nw, as an adult, I see that Indian fd is universally lved by my friends. Sme even try t ck Indian lentils r chickpeas at hme! And when I’m hungry, guess what? I miss my mm’s bhindi rti and her care in making it fr me. Fd is an expressin f culture, traditin, family and lve. And that’s smething t celebrate, nt hide.
5.Why did the writer g hungry ne day in elementary schl?
A.She didn’t like her smelly lunch.B.Her classmates ate up her bhindi rti.
C.Her mm didn’t prepare lunch fr her.D.She skipped her lunch t fit in with thers.
6.What can we infer abut the writer accrding t the passage?

B.Her parents are immigrants frm India.
C.She liked peanut- butter-and-jelly sandwich best.
D.She wuld bite her bhindi rti quickly when smene was lking.
7.Hw did Satya deal with “the lunchbx mment”?
A.She threw away her lunch bx.
B.She asked her teacher t make a rule.
C.She ate American fd instead f her mm’s Indian cking.
D.She brught mre Indian cking t share with her classmates.
8.What des the authr want t tell us?
A.Fd is smething t celebrate, nt hide.
B.Never shuld yu yuck smene’s yum in any case.
C.Indian fd is delicius and universally appreciated.
D.The lunchbx mment is when ne can taste different fds.
The dinner party is disappearing accrding t an article in The New Yrk Times. “Hw can this be?” Yu might wnder. Dn’t we meet with friends t taste fd in the httest restaurants? Aren’t we invited by friends t enjy hme-cked meals? And we thrw parties fr friends n special ccasins, dn’t we?
___9___It is mre frmal and usually hsted in ne’s hme. Invitatins are sent ut ahead and hsts prepare fd with great care. A beautiful tableclth is spread ut n the dinner table, which is then set with expensive cutlery (餐具). Guests dress up fr the ccasin and are expected t carry n a cnversatin at the table.___10___
Is it because peple are t busy t ck fr thers and then invite them t the table? Perhaps, but there are many fd lvers nwadays, and TV prgrams teaching peple hw t ck are very ppular.___11___Accrding t Judith Martin, a US writer, peple have been brught up t express themselves rather than t exchange ideas. They dn’t knw hw t share their experiences and feelings with thers in a prper way.___12___
In her pinin, its influence has been harmful t human cmmunicatin. “Peple dn’t even respnd t dinner invitatin anymre,” she said. “Nt nly d they cancel at the last minute, they d it by text message.”
Things have changed a lt tday. Perhaps the dinner party has just becme a different kind f thing. Hwever, it needs nly be mre than sme fd, a table and a lcatin.___13___ Even if we are using rdinary plates and are nt wearing party dresses, we can still enjy fd and share ur ideas f life, lve and culture, can’t we?

B.In fact the dinner party the writer wrries abut disappearing is anther kind.
C.The real prblem is that peple dn’t knw hw t make cnversatin anymre.
D.They knw exactly which guests t invite s that they can share their favurite fd.
E.The culture f the dinner party is nt necessarily based n mney and scial influence.
F.Yet nwadays, peple prefer t eat takeut fd n sfa while playing n mbile phnes.
G.She als expresses dissatisfactin with electrnic equipment.
    1.C 2.A 3.A 4.B
根据第一段“If yu are invited, dn’t ask t see mre than the dwnstairs that yur British hst invites yu int.
根据第二段“They may be delighted t give yu a full tur f their huses. They may als be pleased when yu shw yur interest and pleasure in their huses. 故选A项。
根据第三段“Bth British and American peple will engage in quite a bit f chat and a drink r tw befre the meal is served.(英国人和美国人在上菜前都会engage in聊上几句,喝上一两杯。)” 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Fr the British, the hme is a private place in which he r she ges t hide away frm the trubles f life. It is very seldm that ne wuld be invited t a British persn’s hme. 很少有人会被邀请到英国人的家里去做客)”以及第二段“T the American, mst f them want their hme t be a place where they can entertain (款待) and share their lives with their friends.
    5.D 6.B 7.D 8.A
根据文章第二段“But feeling embarrassed fr having a ‘smelly’ lunch and wanting t fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbx. That day, I went hungry.(但我为吃了一顿‘有味道’的午餐而感到尴尬,并想融入其中,我悄悄地合上了午餐盒。
根据文章第四段“I didn’t knw that I wasn’t alne. Many kids with immigrant parents encunter(遭遇) what’s knwn as ‘the lunchbx mment’ at schl(我不知道不是我一个人这样。
根据文章倒数第二段“The next day, Satya brught enugh dal t share with her entire class — and they lved it.(第二天,Satya带了足够的扁豆和全班同学分享——他们都很喜欢)”可知,Satya带来了更多的印度菜和同学们分享。故选D。
根据全文内容,结合最后一段中“Fd is an expressin f culture, traditin, family and lve. And that’ s smething t celebrate, nt hide.(食物是文化、传统、家庭和爱的表达。 故选A。
    9.B 10.F 11.C 12.G 13.E
9.第一段中““Hw can this be?” Yu might wnder. Dn’t we meet with friends t taste fd in the httest restaurants? Aren’t we invited by friends t enjy hme-cked meals? And we thrw parties fr friends n special ccasins, dn’t we?”(“怎么会这样?” 空后“It is mre frmal and usually hsted in ne’s hme. Invitatins are sent ut ahead and hsts prepare fd with great care. A beautiful tableclth is spread ut n the dinner table, which is then set with expensive cutlery (餐具). Guests dress up fr the ccasin and are expected t carry n a cnversatin at the table.”(它更加正式,通常在家里举办。
11.根据空前“Is it because peple are t busy t ck fr thers and then invite them t the table? Perhaps, but there are many fd lvers nwadays, and TV prgrams teaching peple hw t ck are very ppular.”(是因为人们太忙了,没有时间为别人做饭,然后邀请他们来吃饭吗? 空后“Accrding t Judith Martin, a US writer, peple have been brught up t express themselves rather than t exchange ideas.
12.根据上文“Accrding t Judith Martin, a US writer, peple have been brught up t express themselves rather than t exchange ideas. They dn’t knw hw t share their experiences and feelings with thers in a prper way.”(美国作家朱迪思•马丁(Judith Martin)表示,人们从小就被教育要表达自己,而不是交流思想。
13.根据上文“Things have changed a lt tday. Perhaps the dinner party has just becme a different kind f thing. Hwever, it needs nly be mre than sme fd, a table and a lcatin.”(今天事情变了很多。 与下文“Even if we are using rdinary plates and are nt wearing party dresses, we can still enjy fd and share ur ideas f life, lve and culture, can’t we?”(即使我们使用普通的盘子,不穿晚礼服,我们仍然可以享受食物,分享我们的生活,爱和文化的想法,不是吗?)
