                                                A

In May 2020, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games(BOCOG) solicited(征集) medal designs worldwide. Hang Hai and his team set about preparing designs to submit to the BOCOG. Medals reflect the culture and creativity of the host country, and the team set two basic principles for their design:

First, it should continue to adopt the jade() culture incorporated into the design of the Beijing 2008 medals to highlight Beijings status as the worlds first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games; second, it should be innovative.

“The medals of both the Beijing 2008 and 2022 Games are to honor the athletes and the Olympic spirit with traditional jade culture, ”said Hang. Jade was chosen because it has been treasured in China and symbolizes good virtue. “The difference is that the 2008 medals used the jade as a material, while the 2022 medals represent the spirit of China’s jade culture,” he added.

In the process of designing the medals, one team member, Lin Fan, conducted extensive research into China’s ancient bi. Lin finally chose a five-ring one associated with Fu Hao — a Shang Dynasty queen — as the prototype(原型) for the medals. In the final design, the opposite side of the medals has the Olympic rings engraved in the center, surrounded by five big concentric(同心的) rings. Auspicious(吉祥的) cloud patterns, as well as snowfakes and ice patterns are engraved between the circles. The cloud patterns are intended to maintain a cultural connection with the 2008 Games, while the snowflakes and ice patterns speak to the characteristics of the Winter Olympics.

The cases holding the medals are made of bamboo. “The International Olympic Committee inquired about the growth and processing of the bamboo to ensure it meets the requirements of a green Olympics and follows the concept of sustainable(可持续的) development,” Hang said.

The medals passed the quality test and were accepted by the Games’ organizing committee on January 7, 2022. The medals are officially named Tongxin and they are the result of many people’s efforts. However, the smile on the athletes’ faces as they wear them makes it all worthwhile.

1What does paragraph 2 focus on?

AThe history of the Olympic medals.

BThe purpose of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

CThe basic requirements of the 2022 medal designs.

DThe significance of the 2008 medal patterns.

2What is the difference between the 2022 medals and the 2008 medals?

A2022 medals use the jade as a material.

B2022 medals strengthen the idea of environmental protection.

C2022 medals make no difference in the medal designs.

D2022 medals reflect the spirit of China’s jade culture.

3Why did the designers add cloud patterns to the 2022 medals?

ATo present harmony between human and nature.

BTo stress the bond with the 2008 Games.

CTo combine with the features of the Winter Olympics.

DTo highlight the charm of Chinese traditional culture.

4What do we know about the cases holding the medals?

ATheir production shows the concept of green Olympics.

    BThey were solicited by BOCOG.

    CThey symbolize good virtue.

DThey spent a lot of time processing.

                                             B

Many travelers are familiar with the UNESCOs World Heritage List (世界遗产名录) However, less is known about the organizations List of World Heritage in Danger. It currently specifies 53 World Heritage sites under threat of “serious and specific dangers” due to factors such as climate change, armed conflict, and development pressures. The accelerated degeneration(退化) of these cultural treasures is a reality that should concern the world, since the younger generation may not have the opportunity to visit them.

For this reason, insurance company Budget Direct, and Neo Mam Studios, a creative studio based in the UK, have started a project, creating a series of GIFs to repair World Heritage sites and demonstrate what these ruins would have looked like if they had been protected.

Drawing attention to sites at risk, the project aims to give everyone the opportunity to visit these sites virtually (虚拟的). It started with in-depth research around the sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Based on the results, the team made a selection according to two main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Second, they still had standing elements. Focusing on the selected sites, the team worked with architects Jelena Popovic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek to research and illustrate six of these legendary locations.

In this series of GIFs, six sites are digitally repaired to their former glory. They include Hatra in Iraq, Leptis Magna in Libya, Palmyra in Syria, Portobelo-San Lorenzo in Panama, Nan Madol in the Federated States of Micronesia as well as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls. Time does not stand still, and neither does technology. Thanks to these technologies, we can travel virtually, without leaving home, to those places that, whatever their future may be, will always be part of the collective memory.

5Why did the team develop the project GIFs?

AThey are curious about some World Heritage sites.

BThe List of World Heritage in Danger is not well-known.

CThe younger generation desire to visit World Heritage sites.

DYoung people may miss the chance to visit some World Heritage sites.

6What kind of endangered World Heritage sites could be chosen for this project?

ANatural sites that had standing elements.

BMan-made sites that had standing elements.

CNatural sites that were destroyed completely.

DMan-made sites that were destroyed completely.

7What can we learn from the last paragraph?

AMore sites on the list will be repaired.

BThe World Heritage sites will be in danger.

CTechnologies make virtually travelling more convenient.

DTechnologies help people visit World Heritage sites virtually.

8What is the passage mainly about?

AAn insurance company saving World Heritage Sites.

    BUNESCO protecting World Heritage Sites.

CWorld Heritage Sites at risk of disappearing.

DEndangered World Heritage Sites rebuilt in GIFs.

In 1972, UNESCO started a programme to protect the world's cultural and natural heritage.____9____The TaMahal (泰姬陵) in India and the Imperial Tombs of the Qing and Ming Dynasties in China are two of the best known examples.

____10____In the early 17th century, India was ruled by an emperor named Shah Jahan who was married to a woman named Mumtaz. The emperor loved his wife so much that when she died, he built the Taj Mahal in her memory. The beautiful mausoleum(陵墓) was designed to look like what the emperor hoped would be Mumtaz's home in the afterlife. The colour of the buildings appears to change with the light of day.____11____The couple, therefore, now rest together forever.

____12____the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are a monument to the mind and spirit. Visitors who walk among the buildings can feel both the weight of history and a wonderful sense of peace. What makes the Qing and Ming Tombs unique is that they bring together architecture and philosophy. The Imperial Tombs represent Chinese cultural and historical values that have been handed down from generation to generation for thousands of years.

Human life lasts only a short time but art and culture last forever, The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites programme attempts to protect and preserve the best of human history. Masterpieces such as the Tai Mahal and the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties remind us of what we can achieve at our finest.____13____

ABuilding the Taj Mahal was a labour of love.

BThe Taj Mahal is a masterpiece of architecture.

CThe king was later buried immediately to Mumtaz.

DThey also encourage us to follow our traditional customs.

ESupposing that the Taj Mahal is a celebration of the heart.

FMeanwhile, they inspire us to live up to our great past in the future.

GMore than 800 cultural sites have been added to the World Cultural Heritage Site List ever since.

9.根据空前“In 1972, UNESCO started a programme to protect the world's cultural and natural heritage.(1972年,联合国教科文组织启动了一项计划,以保护世界文化和自然遗产。)”空后“The TaMahal (泰姬陵) in India and the Imperial Tombs of the Qing and Ming Dynasties in China are two of the best known examples.(印度的泰姬陵和明清两代的皇陵是其中的最好的两个例子。)” 符合,承接上文,并引出下文,且空后的“the best known examples”代本空的“More than 800 cultural sites”,故选G项。

10.根据空后“In the early 17th century, India was ruled by an emperor named Shah Jahan who was married to a woman named Mumtaz. The emperor loved his wife so much that when she died, he built the Taj Mahal in her memory.(17世纪初期,印度由一名叫的Shah Jahan皇帝统治,他与一名叫Mumtaz的女子结婚。皇帝很爱他的妻子,所以当她去世时,他修建了泰姬陵来纪念她。)”可知,空后讲述了泰姬陵的由来,是因为皇帝对他妻子的爱,故A泰姬陵的修建是因为爱。符合,故选A项。

11.根据空后“The couple, therefore, now rest together forever.(因此,这对夫妇永远地安息在一起了。)”

12.根据空后“the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are a monument to the mind and spirit.(明清两代的皇陵就是心灵和精神的丰碑。)”

13.根据空前“Masterpieces such as the Tai Mahal and the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties remind us of what we can achieve at our finest.(像泰姬陵和明清两代的陵墓提醒着我们,我们可以做到最好。)”
