A cmpany in Beijing annunced that it had successfully bred(繁殖) China’s first clned(克隆) cat, reprts China Science and Technlgy Daily.
“The kitten named Garlic(大蒜) was brn n July 21, 2019, in a labratry(实验室) f the bitechnlgy cmpany Singene. It was brn frm an embry (胚胎) carried by a surrgate(代孕) mther,” said Wang Jidng, the CEO f Singene."Garlic has been verified(证实的) as a clned cat by a third-party verificatin rganizatin, and is currently in a gd cnditin."
The birth f the kitten is the result f a clning prgram that began last August. Chen Dayuan, a researcher frm the Institute f Zlgy at the Chinese Academy f Sciences, said the technlgy develped by the cmpany has a high success rate: ne clned kitten frm fur implanted surrgates.
It’s rare(罕见的) fr cats t be successfully clned, said Shi Zhensheng, a prfessr frm the Veterinary Medicine Cllege at China Agricultural University. Cats have unique reprductive characteristics, which make them difficult t clne. The success f Singene marks a step frward in China’s clning research sectr.
The clning technlgy used t create Garlic will help China t build a genetic library f endangered species (物种), with the gal f breeding species under threat f extinctin.

Imagine this: yu and yur friend are n a vide call. He r she picks up a bk, and yu feel like yu’re hlding the bk as well. Yu can shake hands r give yur friend a high five, even thugh yu’re apart.
A pair f special glves might make this a reality. Researchers at the University f New Suth Wales, Australia, have made glves that can recreate the sense f tuch. They call this haptic device(触觉装置)a “sft skin stretch device” (SSD).
The SSD wrks like this: One user’s glves create 3D frce signals when they tuch smething. The signals are sent t the ther user’s glves, which vibrate(震动)t create the same frce that the first user is experiencing. This allws the secnd user t experience the same sense f tuch.
The SSD allws yu t feel frce, vibratin and change. “It is like wearing a secnd skin,” said Thanh Nh D, ne f the researchers wh created the glves.
Haptic technlgy is already being widely used. Fr example, the track pads(触控板)in laptps use vibratin t make it feel like yu’re clicking a real muse. Hwever, it is difficult t recreate the sense f tuch in virtual(虚拟的)envirnments r utside, accrding t Mai Thanh Thai, lead researcher f the SSD prject. The SSD is special because it has a high level f sensitivity(敏感)even when it is used cntinuusly. This makes it feel mre practical.
The SSD culd be used in medical practice. Tw dctrs in different places culd wrk tgether during an peratin(手术)—ne tuches the patient’s rgans(器官)with the SSD while the ther dctr feels the same sensatin(感觉)and cmpletes the peratin.

Have yu ever thught abut what astrnauts eat when they’re in space? What wuld they eat if they had t travel all the way t Mars (火星) ? A lt f the fd astrnauts eat is prcessed (加工过的) because it’s simple t eat and easy t take int space. Hwever, sme vitamins (维生素) can break dwn if the fd is stred fr a lng time. Peple may have health prblems if they eat prcessed fd every day.
Grwing fresh fd in space might help astrnauts stay healthy. It wuld als give them mre fd chices. Fresh vegetables grwn n Earth have many nutrients (营养物质) that prcessed fd d nt have. Hwever, we dn’t knw if vegetables grwn in space are the same. Anther wrry is making sure that these vegetables dn’t have the bacteria r fungi (细菌或真菌) that culd make peple sick.
Luckily, we have a plant grwth rm called Veggie n ISS (the Internatinal Space Statin). We used Veggie t find ut if it’s pssible t grw nutritius and safe fd in space.
We used Veggie t grw red lettuce (红生菜) ver three years. We cmpared these (ISS-grwn) vegetables t thse grwn at the same time n Earth. They were grwn under the same cnditins as n the ISS. We did research n the leaves and rts f all the lettuce plants. And we did nt find any differences in nutrients between ISS-grwn lettuce and Earth-grwn prduce. This means that it is pssible t grw nutritius and safe fd n ISS and astrnauts shuld be able t eat vegetables grwn in Veggie withut wrrying abut getting sick.
Even thugh ur lettuce is safe t eat, we still need t wrk ut tw prblems. Firstly, there are mre bacteria and fungi n ISS-grwn lettuce. The wet envirnment in Veggie is prbably the reasn. Secndly, there are sme differences in nutrients between the vegetables we grew in different years. Plants can change with t much r t little water, but it is hard t water plants in zer gravity (零重力) . Therefre, we need t make sure that grwing envirnments are cnsistent in Veggie. Then astrnauts can be cnfident abut the nutrients in their fd during their lng stay in space.
24.The researchers grew red lettuce in Veggie t ______.
A.decide what kind f fd astrnauts shuld eat in space
B.find ut hw t keep astrnauts safe and healthy in space
C.check if fresh vegetables can be prcessed safely in space
D.test if it’s pssible t grw nutritius and safe fd in space

A.Earth-grwn vegetables are safer and have mre nutrients.
B.ISS-grwn lettuce f different years has different nutrients.
C.Scientists wanted t understand nutrients in prcessed fd.
D.Fewer bacteria and fungi were fund n ISS-grwn vegetables.
26.What d the underlined wrds “are cnsistent” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A.Stay unchanged.B.Becme special.C.Stay cmfrtable.D.Becme enjyable.
27.The last paragraph suggests that ______.
