D yu think the secret t a gd night’s sleep culd be a pencil and paper? Researchers at Baylr University published a study that shwed writing a t-d list helps peple get t sleep faster.
“There are tw different ideas abut this,” The lead researcher, Scullin said. “One is that writing abut the future wuld lead t increased wrry abut unfinished tasks and delay sleep, while writing abut cmpleted activities wuld nt trigger wrry. The alternative hypthesis (假设) is that writing a t-d list will fflad thse thughts and reduce wrry.”
T test the hyptheses, researchers invited 57 men and wmen between ages 18 and 30 t spend ne weeknight in a cntrlled sleep lab and they were divided int tw grups, the experimental grup and the cntrl grup. Five minutes befre bedtime, each participant was instructed t cmplete a shrt writing exercise. The first grup wrte abut anything they needed t remember t d in the upcming days, while the ther wrte abut tasks they had cmpleted during the previus days. When the exercise was dne, participants went t bed.
Researchers measured each participant’s brain activity vernight using a technique called plysmngraphy (睡眠多项生理检查) , which recrds eye mvement, muscle activity and ther bilgical changes.
The researchers fund that the participants wh wrte t-d lists fell asleep an average f 9 minutes faster than thse wh wrte abut already-accmplished tasks. While 9 minutes may nt seem t be a lng time, it’s the same imprvement seen in sme tests fr sleep medicatins, Scullin said.
Scullin nted that while the sample size was suitable fr a labratry-based study, a larger future study wuld be f value. “Measures f persnality, anxiety, and depressin might mderate the effects f writing n falling asleep, and that culd be explred in an investigatin with a larger sample,” he said. “The study invlved health y yung adults, and s we dn’t knw whether ur findings wuld be true t patients with sleeplessness, thugh sme writing activities have previusly been suggested t benefit such patients.”
