Upcoming Food Festivals in Summer
Stuttgarter Weindorf (Stuttgart, Germany), August 21-25
This food festival celebrates wine on the land of beer.
German wine is obviously underrated. Stuttgart’s annual Weindorf sees 28 open air restaurants serving more than 500 wines from Baden and Wurttemberg, with reds, whites, roses and sparkling versions all avaiable. Fresh pretzels and chocolates will also be available to help mop up the alcohol.
Matstreif (Oslo, Norway), July 11-12
With a wide variety of dishes available at wallet-sparing prices, this event sees more than 200 food stalls open for business in Oslo’s City Hall Square.
Bold foodies should try “rakfisk” -rotten fish. If that sounds a bit much, there’s always “svele”, a kind of pancake that originates from western Norway.
Loch Lomond Food and Drink Festival (Loch Lomond, Scotland), August 4-6
The 10th annual edition of this festival offers one of the best showcases for Scottish produce. On the menu are local specialties and venison (鹿肉) from the surrounding national park.
For those who like a competitive edge with their lunch, there’s even a “haggis” eating contest that pits eight hungry visitors against each other to see who can eat a pound of the local food
Cheese 2023 (Bra, Italy), August 27-September 2
The name is a bit of a giveaway here. This bi-annual event sees Italy’s best cheese makers gather on the small town of Bra.
Its free to visit, although plenty of euros (欧元) are needed to pay for samples and tryout some of the courses on offer. Whatever they are hunting for, cheese lovers will be well taken care of. They just need to make sure there’s time for post-cheese snooze before the next round of cheese tasting.
1. What can visitors do at the Norwegian food festival?
A. Try some pancakes.
B. Eat a pound of haggis.
C. Drink red and white wines.
D. Buy samples of cheese.

The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin (起源) of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers — the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain — the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic (象形) language while the western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural difference should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. The origin of cultures. B. Culture differences.
C. Language systems. D. Colorful world.
9. Why is the American culture similar to the European culture?
A. Both of the two cultures have a very long history.
B. They have the same mother rivers as the Chinese culture.
C. The early settlers from Britain brought their culture to America.
D. Both the British and the American live along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
10. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “interference” in paragraph4?
A. difference B. influence
C. confidence D. environment
11. Where is the passage most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A magazine.
C. A novel. D. A guidebook.
B 9. C 10. B 11. B

由第一段中的“The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.”
由第三段“When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.”
由第四段“due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the west, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries.”
由第一段中的“The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.”

Kenya’s wildlife officials have made a free mobile phone app, Makenya, to help track wild animals in the country.
Kenya is home to nearly 400 species of mammals. Officials say it is getting more difficult to protect them, as climate change and human activities damage their natural environment.
The app lets any user who sees a wild mammal identify it and give its location. Uses can also give other details. “You can also add the behavior. When you see this animal what are they doing? Are they resting? Are they running away? Are they feeding? What are they doing at the moment you see them? said Dr. Simon Musil, a wildlife researcher.
According to Musila, there is a need to have many people use the app to get more information about the animals. This can help the small number of mammal specialist in Kenya. The specialists have kept records of the animals’ changing environments and survival conditions. Many people, including safari guides, visitors, student or anyone who goes out and sees the animals could also use the app. They can upload images and add details, such as the number of mammals and their exact locations.
Samson Onyuok, one of the app users, said he is proud to help protect animals in his country. As a Kenyan, that is his little way of contributing to the conservation initiatives. Users like him have reported more than 2500 mammal sightings since August.
Experts say that while Africa is not the cause of much climate change, it is badly affected by it. Dr. Philip Muruthi, director of the African Wildlife Foundation, said that the birth rate of rare mammals (哺乳动物) and the survival rate of young ones are dropping.
“It is very hard to benefit or manage what you don’t know,” he said. “That is why this is so important. It is going to tell us which species we have, where they are, and maybe which ones are highly endangered, what we need to do about them. And especially not just the big things but also the small things, like the bats.”
12. What are users of Makenya advised to do?
A. Upload the detail of the spotted animals.
B. Feed the hungry animals in the wild.
C. Keep the running animals insight.
D. Take a picture with the spotted animals.
13. Which of the following can best describe Samson Onyuok?
A. Hardworking. B. Responsible. C. Careful. D. Patient.
14. Why does Dr. Philip Muruthi consider the app significant?
A It is developed by Kenyan officials.
B. It costs just a little for Kenyan users.
C. It is internationally supported.
D. It presents overall cases of animal in Kenya.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Endangered animals in Kenya.

D. Popular apps to admire wild animals.
