In these early years he als finished pencil sketches f sailing ships, which were almst technical in their clear descriptiveness. His aunt, Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, was an amateur painter, and, perhaps at her suggestin, Claude went t study drawing with a lcal artist. But his life as a painter did nt begin until he was befriended by Eugène Budin, wh intrduced Mnet t the practice f painting in the pen air. The experience set the directin fr Mnet, wh fr mre than 60 years wuld cncentrate n visible phenmena.
As the 1870s began, Mnet cntinued his pursuit f natural phenmena. In rder t avid the Franc-German War, he left his family and traveled t Lndn. There, he was intrduced t Paul Durand-Ruel, wh was t becme his dealer. The years he lived there marked the height f the Impressinist mvement. In his famus painting, Impressin, Sunrise, Claude Mnet keeps the details t a bare minimum. A light mist prvides a fggy backgrund t the sunrise in the French seaprt f Le Havre while bats are just suggested by a few rugh brushstrkes in the fregrund, where range and yellw clrs cntrast sharply with the dark bats and water. The whle picture seems like an unfinished wrk.
Actually, Mnet himself saw the wrk as unfinished since he just had enugh time t catch a rugh impressin f the mment. And it was fr that reasn that he adpted the title “Impressin” t distinguish it frm his ther wrks abut Le Havre.
Frm the April 15 t May 15, 1874, Mnet exhibited this wrk with thse f Camille Pissarr, Alfred Sisley, Eduard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, and sme ther thirty artists. They rganized the exhibitin n their wn as they were rejected at the Paris Saln.
Mnet’s Impressin, Sunrise enjyed the mst attentin and visitrs even claimed that they were abslutely unable t recgnize what was shwn at all. A critic, Luis Lery, wh attended the exhibitin, wrte a nw-famus article in Le Charivari in which he used the term “Impressinist” based n the title f this painting. Despite the fact that Lery had used the wrd in a negative sense, the grup decided t adpt it and the painters were happy t be called Impressinists. Tday, Impressin, Sunrise is cnsidered as ne f the best-knwn paintings.
Althugh the painting is very famus, it is in many ways untypical f Mnet’s wn wrk f this perid and f Impressinism. It shws little f the Impressinist treatment f light and clur and the painting is strngly emtinal rather than analytical.
Nevertheless, the highly abstract technique emplyed t catch a rugh impressin f the mment des illustrate particularly well the revlutinary feature f an Impressinist painting. At that time, this technique was still cmpletely alien t viewers.

A new study suggests classic paintings by well-knwn Impressinists Jseph Turner and Claude Mnet may have been influenced by air pllutin during the Industrial Revlutin.
The study, published in Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences by authrs frm Harvard and Srbnne universities, analyzed 60 il paintings by Turner frm 1796 t 1850 and 38 paintings by Mnet frm 1864 t 1901.
Scientists dn’t knw exactly hw plluted the cities were during that time fr lack f data. Hwever, researchers say examining the wrks f Turner and Mnet can give a picture f lng-term envirnmental change with the air pllutin.
In particular, researchers said changes in lcal sulfur dixide emissins frm burning cal may explain changes in the clur cntrast and intensity f Tuner, Mnet, and thers’ wrks, even after taking int accunt the artistic trends and subject matter f the time.
Scientists successfully measured painters’ representatin f nature, fcusing n differences in lcal weather patterns which influenced clur in wrks painted in different parts f Eurpe. Paintings’ dne in Britain generally feature a paler blue sky than ther wrks in ther parts f the cntinent. Generally, artists can histrically accurately represent their envirnment, s Turner and Mnet were chsen because they are famus fr their landscape and cityscape paintings and als because they were active during the Industrial Revlutin, when air pllutin grew at a rate never seen befre.
Additinally, researchers say that as the air in Lndn and Paris became mre plluted, the cities wuld appear hazier t the eyes as well as in phtgraphs. By cmparing the paintings f Turner and Mnet t pictures frm the era, they were able t determine the artists were at least partly influenced by the change in emissins.
32.What did the researchers find in the wrks f Turner and Mnet?
A. Change in subject matter.B. Air pllutin at that time.
C. Scial trends f the perid.D. Develpment f phtgraphy.
33.The researchers cnduct the study by________.
A. referring t relevant histrical recrdsB. cmparing the paintings f Turner and Mnet
C. relating the paintings t the air cnditins thenD. analyzing the data during the Industrial Revlutin

A. Eurpean artists preferred landscape paintings.B. Scientists fcused n studying weather patterns.
C. Turner and Mnet intended t present pllutin.D. Britain suffered frm air pllutin mst in Eurpe.
35.What is the purpse f the text?
A. T infrm peple f a new discvery.B. T instruct peple t appreciate paintings.
C. T intrduce the Industrial Revlutin.D. T call n peple t prtect the envirnment.
